he'd always been the good little soldier his father wanted him to be. hale looked down, kept his mouth shut, and protected his twin brother in every way he knew how. hayden wasn't as good with the violence as he was but, by some odd miracle, they'd both been sent off to scarif for another level of training. training in extreme temperatures, to the brink of what they thought their bodies could handle, and then miles beyond that. they were tested, enhanced, broken down, and rebuilt. hale endured all of it because his brother's belief in the empire far surpassed anything else. maybe it was because of his lover tatum.
hale never thought to ask before his brother was murdered.
traitor, they'd called him. but not to hale's face. no. they'd kept the death a secret and by the time news got back to his own ears all he'd gotten were reminders of how grateful he should be for his position. how lucky he is.
so, he left. the next mission he was sent on he stole a tie-fighter and never looked back.
when obi-wan found him, he'd been dejected and broken. guilt had him picking any fight he possibly could but the generous sith lord reminded him of all the reasons to live. one betrayal did not have to immediately mean another or that retribution could not be had. to say his heart attached a little too completely to the sith was an understatement.
" thank you, my lord, " hale's smile lingers a little too long. if they'd been alone the death trooper would've lifted the few inches between them to steal a kiss. " i won't be caught off guard again. "
he wasn't sure why they were here or what they were looking for. all he did know was the ambush knocked the rifle from his hand. too many descended from the sky, piling on top of him until even his enhanced strength couldn't fight back anymore.
back on his feet, hale walks over to pick up his weapon. not far away is a groaning body struggling to get onto his knees. the trooper's black boot settles on the man's shoulder, pushing him back down to the dirt. with a tilt of his head, a quick decision made. the blaster flies out from the holster on his thigh and a fraction of a second later there's a smoking black hole in between the man's eyes. " watch who you jump next time, asshole. "

hale was, personally, used to people looking at him in a variety of ways. from pity to awe to jealousy to fear to lust and every thing in between. interesting what people did back when he still had the helmet to go along with the rest of his death trooper armor. it was cracked and damaged now, with no way of repairing it since he was no longer part of the empire that forged it but the soldier liked to think the new variety of color gave it some pizzazz.
when he walked proud behind the great obi-wan kenobi he saw the same eyes upon him going through the same trail of emotions. although, there was a lot more confusion when people looked at him. once, the other man had been a beacon of the light; shining hope all around the galaxy to spark rebellious thoughts.
the death trooper had learned, the hard way, everything was a matter of perspective. when he was training it'd been ingrained in him that the rebels were full of lies, trying to take down the emporer's hard work. he had a life of stability, people who cared for him, and something that put food on the table. when he was lost there was a shoulder to cry on. like any group of people, there were those who were power hungry and corrupt. he'd seen it everywhere, under every kind of son. corruption wasn't exclusive to the empire's banner.
this particular mission was the two of them. hale wasn't privy to what the sith had everyone else in their little rag-tag family doing but if it wasn't his business this time, then it wasn't his business. all the trooper knew was they were to pick up a child; a small girl. now that they had her the rest of the plan was starting to unfold. some of their interactions had hale believe there was history here, he just wasn't sure what kind yet.
" we could just keep a bag over her head, " one shoulder shrugs up. the little runt was locked behind another door, now. since it was just the two of them he felt confident enough to set his weapons to the side and slide a hand to the back of obi's neck. " there isn't enough tranquilizer on board to keep her out until we reach our destination but if you tell me what needs to be done i can do it so you don't have to look at her any more. "

cael had been feeling weird all day. there was that odd flutter in his stomach that wasn't anxiety and it wasn't anything else he knew how to define. a tug of sorts. almost like there was a magnet in his blood trying to connect with something else. it happened every now and again but he'd never been able to figure out why.
on this particular day it should've been a message to stay in bed.
walking home from the bar, he'd been attacked from behind. this tall soldier in black armor sucker punched him. there'd been a sarcastic quip in there cael hadn't hurt, probably because his head was already throbbing by that point. another punch to the gut and an arm around his neck meant all he could do was listen to the whisper in his ear telling him to go to sleep.
when he came to, the room was dark. from what he could tell the furnishings and shape of the room let him believe he was at least on the same planet, still. just not in any building that he could immediately recognize.
" do we? " cael squints against the single light hanging over his head like some interrogation. out of the corner of his eye he sees a glint that looks something like a leg plate. instincts told him there was someone else in the room, though. that particular direction wasn't where the energy in his blood was buzzing towards. " and what kind of decision is that? " fingers flex behind his back. could he use the force against two people and get free? only one real way to find out.

"Yes, Master." Luke replied, slightly out of breath. He managed not to wince as he stood up, even as his muscles ached in protest and the small burns that covered him stung with every movement. He was falling short today, continually failing to block shots fired at him by the training droid, and he was feeling the result. It was hard not to get frustrated. Each time he got hit or lost his balance that frustration grew, only making his next movements even sloppier.
His Master was relentless in his lessons. Hours every day were spent training his endurance and strength, both physically and in the Force, until he was left trembling from exhaustion. But it was worth it because he was getting better, even if his performance today didn’t show that. And there was a rush to it, whenever he perfected a move or blocked a shot.
