in similar ways as “sokka’s master”, “the firebending masters” can be read as an allegory for queerness and neurodivergence. in this episode zuko, a character widely recognized as autistic-coded, is given a new way of learning firebending, a skill he has been working his whole life to master. and now, learning in this unconventional way, he is able to learn far more easily than he could when he was training under formal tutors in the palace.
as for queerness, zuko has lived his whole life associating firebending with rage and power and violence, so when he lets go of rage and power and violence, he loses his ability to firebend. and this cannot be separated from the fire nation’s (and therefore zuko’s) views on masculinity; in the fire nation, fire bending is masculinity is aggression, and part of why zuko cared so much about being a powerful firebender is to prove that he was enough of a man. so, learning the sun warriors’ form of firebending, which is based in warmth and love, also allows zuko (who is NOT STRAIGHT) to redefine his masculinity. (plus…… yknow…. the fire is rainbow……….)
As for Aang, he has spent months suppressing his firebending abilities, so he needs a gentle hand to guide him back into it. He needs the same unconventional learning style that Zuko needed and was unable to give him at first. And after they meet the firebending masters and Zuko figures out how to teach Aang, it works much better than his earlier methods, which were probably at least partially based on the palace tutors. Aang needs a neurodivergent teacher.
As for queerness, Aang has never had a connection to modern Fire Nation ideas of masculinity, because of his upbringing. Since modern firebending is tied so closely to aggression and masculinity, he cannot learn it that way. He’s even kind of aware of this connection, because of how he hurt Katara. He doesn’t want to take on those qualities, so he doesn’t want to firebend. Learning that firebending is also warmth and love, and has a traditionally feminine side, helps him connect to this type of bending, and helps him let go of the fear and guilt he’s built around it. ((Also the fire was rainbow!!))

there’s something about zuko having been shown affection pretty much only by iroh when he was going through the hardest moments in his life in certain specific ways like iroh offering him tea he made himself or sharing proverbs zuko just doesn’t understand. and when zuko is in the comforting “caretaking” or showing affection role for the first time with the gaang he makes them tea, and he offers sokka strange proverbs none of them understand. yknow like... trying to... emulate....... iroh
