Thoughts from an airplane

Up until 2014 I worked in corporate marketing - industrial marketing to be exact. It definitely wasn’t sexy and certainly didn’t help or affect anyone other than corporations wanting to make a profit.

In 2014 I was laid off and thanks to a friend was offered a job with a non-profit association. I’d done some volunteer board work, but sitting on the employee side was a new experience.

Fast forward to today. I’m fully embraced in the NFP world. Namely the association side. I am a crazy person, and am stretching myself too thin. I need to make some choices and I know what the choice will be.

All of that to say, it really is an honor to work for an association that works hard to make a difference in the lives of patients suffering from a rare disease. My role in meetings is often isolated from a lot of the advocacy work our org does, and it’s awesome to see and hear the patient stories and the impact of our work.

Christmas has often been an afterthought for the most part with our family dynamic over the past many many years. For as long as @dylissia and I have been together, our oldest kid goes to her Dad's house on Christmas Day. Our present opening has (almost exclusively) happened on Christmas Eve. Christmas morning means a trip to the airport to put the kid on a plane back to the midwest. [Before we moved, it meant getting out onto the empty slippery roads to deliver the kid]

This is the absolute last time we have to do this. I suspect next year we're going to find that she no longer wants to go since she'll be 18 and no longer is legally required to spend Christmas Day with her step-mom. [as an aside.. Fuck that awful human (that == 'step-mom')]

I also suspect this post may be one that Marie reblogs and adds her own commentary below... and if she does: I can almost guarantee it'll be something about her ex-mother-in-law being a shit and giving our kid, who has anxiety, a huge ball of anxiety and frustration to sit with on the plane to Chicago. Screw that lady. Totally understand her concern.. maybe she could have fucking had that concern yesterday.

So back story. The kiddos grandpa is immune compromised and has some serious heart issues. They have some ‘Rona concerns (*now*. They were deniers and remain trumpets).

Kiddo texts grandma with a question. Grandma responds with an answer and an oh BTW, you just got off a cruise. Grandpa is concerned so we’re sending a COVID test with your dad for you to take at the airport before you come over. Keep in mind. She’s supposed to be STAYING there.

They couldn’t have said this yesterday ? I have tests. There ARE stores in FL. I 100% get and understand and respect the concern. BUT…. We were literally almost to the airport? What would they do if she’d pop positive? Send her back? She’s fucking 17 and it’s Christmas. Let’s give the kid with medically treated anxiety who already is struggling with this trip one more thing.

Things I’m thinking about at 1:00 a.m. because I can’t sleep

1. I need to find “grown up” purses

2. I need to go shopping. I need “business casual” clothing that actually fit and are in style for this decade. I haven’t had to wear anything other than yoga pants and the occasional jeans since 2019. Probably longer for true business casual clothing.

3. I love strategic planning. But writing one is a whole other story.

4. Imposter syndrome is a very real thing. Gotta kick that thought out.

Hug your loved ones. Life can turn on a dime.

4 months ago my BIL had a massive stroke and ruptured aneurysm. 3 1/2 months in hospitals. 30 days in critical care.

My sister moved to FL just before this happened, starting a new job. Her husband was supposed to join her in early May.

He fell Sunday night in his rehab facility - hitting his head and causing a subdural hematoma. They medflighted him out and emergency surgery was performed.

They told my sister yesterday there was nothing more to do. He has no brain activity. He’s being sustained on life support until his sister and some other family can get there to say good by.

I’ve been casually looking for a new job for a while...by casually I mean I look at the recommend job postings that get emailed to me once in a while. I saw one today that looked interesting...so I took a look.  It’s been posted 48 hours and has 916 applicants.  916!!!!  In case anyone was wondering just how badly COVID has affected the event planning and conference industry.
