The Five First Saturdays Devotion
A Devotion of Love and Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
"My child, look, my Heart is surrounded with thorns which ungrateful men place therein at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me…"
✠ What is the Five First Saturdays Devotion?
The Five First Saturdays Devotion is a beautiful Catholic devotion requested by Our Lady of Fatima. It is an act of love and reparation offered to her Immaculate Heart for the offenses, indifference, and blasphemies committed against her.
Rather than being simply another private devotion, it is a response to a direct request from Heaven—a way of consoling the Heart of the Mother who constantly leads souls to her Son.
✠ The Origin
On December 10, 1925, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Sister Lúcia in Pontevedra, Spain, accompanied by the Child Jesus.
Mary showed Sister Lúcia her Immaculate Heart encircled with sharp thorns and said:
"Look, my daughter, at my Heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, strive to console me..."
She then asked that the faithful practice the devotion of the Five First Saturdays, promising extraordinary graces to those who do so faithfully.
Later, Sister Lúcia explained that Our Lord revealed the reason there are five Saturdays: they correspond to five principal offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
✠ The Five Offenses Against Mary's Immaculate Heart
The devotion is offered in reparation for:
-> Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception.
-> Blasphemies against her perpetual Virginity.
-> Blasphemies against her Divine Motherhood (Theotókos) , including the refusal to acknowledge her as the Mother of all mankind.
-> Those who publicly seek to implant indifference, contempt, or even hatred for Mary into the hearts of children.
-> Those who insult or profane her sacred images.
✠ How to Practice the Devotion
On the first Saturday of five consecutive months, fulfill all four conditions with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
🌹 1. Go to Confession
Within about eight days before or after the First Saturday (if necessary).
Be in the state of grace when receiving Holy Communion.
Offer your confession in reparation to Mary's Immaculate Heart.
🌹 2. Receive Holy Communion
Attend Mass and receive Our Lord worthily.
Offer your Communion in reparation for offenses against Mary.
🌹 3. Pray Five Decades of the Holy Rosary
Pray attentively while meditating upon the mysteries.
🌹 4. Keep Mary Company for Fifteen Minutes
Spend an additional fifteen minutes meditating on one or more mysteries of the Rosary.
This is separate from praying the Rosary itself.
Simply remain with Our Lady, contemplating the mysteries of Christ through her eyes.
Everything should be done with the intention of making reparation to her Immaculate Heart.
✠ The Promise
Our Lady made this remarkable promise:
"I promise to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me."
This promise should never be understood as a guarantee apart from living the Catholic faith. Rather, it is a maternal assurance of Mary's powerful intercession for those who faithfully embrace this devotion with sincere love and perseverance.

In a February multinational study published in the Journal of Religion and Health, researchers from Italy, Poland, and Spain surveyed 361 practicing Catholics to learn how praying the Rosary affected their mental and spiritual well-being.
“The study of benefits linked to meditation and prayer has provided a considerable amount of empirical evidence revealing their positive influence on health, coping, resilience and flourishing,” an abstract from the research read.
The study, titled “Is the Rosary Still Relevant? Exploring its Impact on Mental Health and Well-Being,” interviewed Catholics from Italy, Poland, and Spain, all of which are traditionally Catholic countries."
"The study of benefits linked to meditation and prayer has provided a considerable amount of empirical evidence revealing their positive influence on health, coping, resilience and flourishing. The practice of praying Rosary has drawn much less attention in academic circles, even if it could probably be enlisted with other forms of meditation and prayer with similar positive effects. The present research based on a broad international sample from three Catholic countries (Italy, Poland and Spain) assesses the extent to which such prayer is linked to subjective well-being, empathy and other expressions of religiosity. The sample size consisted of 361 participants. Sampling was conducted using a chain or network method, initiated by reaching out to individuals involved in Catholic movements and devotional groups. The estimated response rate was approximately 65%. The results point to positive moderate correlations of rosary with those variables, like reducing depression, increasing empathy and lowering religious struggles. The network structure analysis reveals that religiosity and religious struggle have the highest number of associations with other variables, establishing them as central factors. Additionally, the qualitative analysis of open-ended questions highlights the perceived protective effect of this prayer, which serves as a source of inner peace and a coping mechanism during times of distress."

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Our Mother of Perpetual Help is the title given to a 15th-century icon that originated in the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499. Due to the promotion of the image by the Redemptorist Priests since 1865 many reproductions have been made and venerated.
Here is a list of the meaning of some of the elements of the icon:
• Mary’s eyes, filled with compassion and love, are directed toward us.
• Our Lady is clothed in the colors of virgins (red) and of mothers (blue). These are also royal colors.
• The star on Mary’s veil reminds us that she is the dawn announcing the coming of Christ.
• The Christ Child grasps his mother’s hand as though he is frightened by what he sees.
• In His hurry to reach his mother, Jesus has almost lost one of his sandals. He became human, like us, in all things but sin.
• On Our Lady’s left and right, we see the reasons for the child’s fear. On the right is the Archangel Gabriel, holding a cross and four nails. On the left is the Archangel Michael, holding a lance and a gall-sop of Christ’s Passion. This vision of the instruments of the crucifixion has driven the young Jesus to his mother’s protective embrace.
