Thomas More (1478-1535), English Renaissance humanist. His boyfriend Erasmus of Rotterdam once described Sir Thomas as having a character “more pure than any snow.” Not only was More a successful lawyer, author, and statesman (Lord Chancellor even!), but he was so cool the Catholic church declared him a saint in 1935. The church’s fondness of More stems from the fact that he sassed Henry VIII when he was divorcing people like it was his job, and subsequently had his head severed from the rest of his body. He also had a beautiful steely gaze. Oh yeah, and he invented the word utopia, which is a pretty nice accomplishment too.
Artist Rory Macbeth inscribed the entire text (44,000 words) of Thomas More’s Utopia on the former Eastern Electricity building in Norwich, England before the building was demolished.
Probably cooler than what they had there before.
