But then, amongst the judgemental crowd, a familiar face.
A kind face; one that bore no disgust or malice, just the same sad eyes and neutral expression.
Seungcheol didnât realize how much he loved and craved that face until now.
His feet were moving forward before he even realized it.
âJisoo,â he whispered, when he reached the boy. The other just smiled softly back. A quick look at his screen told Seungcheol that Jisoo had dropped in ratings too.
It is because of me? Seungcheol suddenly panicked.
But Jisoo remained composed which made him calm down too.
âJisoo,â Seungcheol repeated, even softer and more vulnerable than before. âI⌠I donât know what to do.â
The day started off like any other, Jisoo wakes up, prepares for work, does his best and hope he reached a rank high enough for some education, or a decent life. He does it like he would any other day, extra efforts in squeaking for some extra clean touch and if his customer doesnât recognise him, he gets a slight increase in ranks, around 250 satisfied customers would increase it by a whopping .001, baby steps.Â
Except that today in particular, they seemed to look at him differently, suddenly there were so much more urges to hurry up and give them the damn shoes, it looks clean enough, or some sort of please take a look at this subtle spot you left out, youâre wasting my time Iâm never returning here again. Even his usuals who were familiar with his style of working were being particularly difficult, some looking at him with looks of distaste and truth be told, Jisoo felt betrayed. And in a moment, he hoped that it was just a bad day for everyone before his little dreams of being able to receive education becomes even smaller.
Realising that there was no point in continuing to garner more dissatisfaction, he decided to call it a day and give his exhausted self a long deserved break, before he collapse from overworking or something. Wiping off some dirt, he headed back home, taking the normal route since itâd be empty at working hours, and had a better view.Â
As he passed by the train station, he caught on a sobbing figure, instinctively approaching it before stopping in his tracks when he saw who it was, and that he was coming towards Jisoo. He honestly wanted to run at that point, but stayed anyway, seeing how much he was probably needed right now.
He waited for Seungcheol to stop speaking before he realised what was going on, slightly flustered at how it took him half a day, a bunch of yelling customers and a tearful Seungcheol to realise that his rankings has steadily dropped, and so has Seungcheolâs. He had no idea what he or Seungcheol did, nor did he know how many people were affected by this.
What he does know is that, firstly, heâs not meant for higher education, not in this lifetime. Next, he has an experience in steep declines, and having it a second time felt even worse. And finally, he needs to be here for Seungcheol while it lasts, no matter how much the previous two facts were affecting him.
He pulled the other boy into his arms and gave him some light pats on his back, before pulling away and asking, âdo you have a place to stay? My place would be good, since itâs already in field, I doubt weâll get chased out.âÂ
He saw the hesitance in the other and shrugged it away.
âOr you could just follow me back for now and decide, donât worry about convenience. I get lonely.â he lies.
Dragging the other by intertwining their fingers, he headed straight for his place, a humble apartment with only a small kitchen area, a bed, a bathroom, a small study table and miscellaneous items lying around. âMake yourself comfortable, I guess.â he declares as he heads to the kitchen and quickly prepares a glass of water, overspilling itâs content as he tries to bring it the way back to Seungcheol.
