October's Big Question: How Do We Connect with Others?
This month's Big Question & the topic for Sundown Celebration tonight! 5:30 Cohen Center 2nd floor. Food provided!
As human beings, how do we connect?
Each of us is unique. A whirl of experiences, filtered through the particulars of time and place and family and culture and and and. Somehow, through all of that, we find ways to connect with one another. We communicate, and sometimes we form deep connections despite what may seem to be profound differences.
This month our theme challenges us to think about how…

September’s Big Question: How are we seen? What do you know about someone you haven't met? Are you sure? Our senses flood us with impressions of other people.Â

Asking Big Questions
Some questions matter to all of us, though we may not answer them the same way. Big questions aren’t about facts. They’re about stories and ideas and why things matter and who we really are. Big questions lead to connections — between thoughts and experiences for us as individuals, and between people if we share our responses and listen to each other.
This year, our reflection themes will be…

On this day, we remember and celebrate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King’s message of peace and equality continues to inspire the world. In 1966, Dr. King addressed the UUA General Assembly in Hollywood, FL, saying: “All I'm saying is this: that all life is inter-related, and somehow we are all tied together. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of all reality… This realization is absolutely necessary if we are to remain awake in this revolution.” Photos from the UUA archives.

"This is the time of year when people set goals. We challenge you, instead, to set guidelines. Don't focus on a weight, but on making more healthy choices. Don't focus on a grade, but on better study habits. Don't set yourself up to focus on your failures, but see every day as a new chance to live up to your personal best. That is one of the great things about being a Unitarian Universalist: we don't focus on what happens at the end, but on making things a little better every day. We don't have a promise; we have a process that helps you deal with the world we live in in such a way as to make it a nicer place for yourself and others. In the new year, let us resolve to live up to Principles, not promises, knowing that today's failure often tells us very little about tomorrow."

Christmas is the time when we seek to make children happy, and ourselves become as little children in innocence and purity of heart.

In the Northern Hemisphere, today marks the shortest day, the moment when the earth tilts again toward the light. But it is also the beginning of winter, not its depth, and the coldest days are still to come. Where do you look for signs of growing light when it feels like winter might be endless? & Continue reading Â’

Supporting Love in all ways
I’m saddened to hear that Rev. Frank Schaefer was defrocked this morning.  However, I’m not surprised either.  His commitment to changing the Book of Discipline and the UMC’s attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people is inspiring, and I hope that he will be an agent for change and advocacy.
We are in solidarity with Rev. Frank Schaefer and his decision to stay true to his beliefs, even if it means being defrocked by the United Methodist Church.
