“...You would think they would do something about it by now.” 

Oh, there they were again, the resounding booms and distant chatter that refused to let Tsubasa get a good night’s slumber. Just another night in Solaris University, in the Aurora district that never liked to turn off its lights for a single night and just let its inhabitants rest.

Honestly, he was half expecting his dorm to be empty tonight; students who stayed in like him were a rare breed. But... the presence of his roommate was a welcome surprise.

Leaning in his desk chair, Tsubasa pulled out one of the drawers and presented a small, open plastic package of neon orange earplugs.

“Need some?”

“Ah. No, actually I was just on a walk.” It was the closest to the truth Victor could even get, he really was just on a walk outside in the woods in December. Gee, that sounded pretty suspicious now that he was playing the situation back in his head. 

Victor’s thoughts trailed off a bit as he eyed his young student a bit. He felt a little melancholy seeing the young skater. It would be a lie if Victor said that Tsubasa didn’t remind him of himself when he was younger with long hair. Good times.

“Well now that you’ve offered, sure!” He grew more excited by the second as he was dragged from his thoughts and to the offer of Tsubasa. “Unless you were just joking…” Something told him though that his dear student wasn’t actually joking but only time would tell the truth. It’d be a very impressive sight to see, Tsubasa flying across the leap with the sun and the snow and- oh wait. On the thought of if he could make it came the ones of if Tsubasa actually couldn’t.

Victor shifted a bit as he looked at the jump a little more. It was a pretty big leap with a kinda deadly drop in Victor’s eyes, or maybe it wasn’t but it would definitely hurt to fail a jump like that. 

“On second thought maybe you shouldn’t.”

Tsubasa noted the fear that briefly flashed in his instructor’s eyes, though, of course, staying quiet on the matter. No need to note such a thing. The thought of his coach being concerned of his well-being isn’t lost on him, though.

“I assure you, I can make it, coach. I don’t joke about these things.” 

Adjusting the bag on his shoulder once more, Tsubasa backed up from the hole, giving him a nice, clear path. One foot back, he began to sprint, feet crunching through the snow before leaping at the hole’s edge, soaring through the air and making the jump easily, landing on the other side with a grunt. 

After wiping the snow off of his knees, Tsubasa turned around and looked back at Coach Nikiforov on the other side, giving a thumbs up and showing a small smile just to humor the man. 

Ice skating lessons never needed to teach him that.

[“What are you even doing here?”]

The tone and intonation of his coach’s voice with the inquiry made Tsubasa raise an eyebrow, glancing over at the man once more. Did Coach Nikiforov suspect that he was doing something illicit? Surely not. He didn’t think his coach was one to be quick to judge, but... perhaps that was a misjudgment on his own part.

...Well, never mind that. His reasons were purely innocent, unless ice skating on a frozen spring was somehow illegal in Solaris. 

“Most likely for the same reason as you, coach,” Tsubasa replied, once again adjusting the bag on his shoulder. “Unless you aren’t going out to ice skate?” He showed a small, playful smirk, before looking back at the hole in question.

“I have made this jump many times in the past,” he stated, “I often visit these woods to clear my head. It... reminds me of home.” 

Home. To the little countryside house where his Aunt Akane was living. He knew how to live in the city, going to an illustrious private school prepared him for such a life, but his heart was always with the wilderness. His eyes were wistfully staring into the distance at the thought, before he snapped back to his current situation.

“Do you... want me to prove it?”

“Yes, this leg is definitely broken.”

Hands carefully cupping the sparrow that had been placed in his care, Tsubasa took caution to make sure he didn’t harm the bird any more than it already had been. His heart ached at the sight, animals were near and dear to him, and birds of any kind were the most of all. 

He glanced down at the sparrow for a few more seconds, before looking back at the person who had come for his help.

“What happened to it? Is it yours?”

“U-Uh… I’m not too sure, Coach Nikiforov.”

Tsubasa stood awkwardly next to his superior, (Being the same height as him did not help the situation,) adjusting the bag against his shoulder holding his skates and looking back at the situation at hand. 

He had just wanted to practice at the frozen-over spring, for goodness sake. Tsubasa had thought that no one else had known about it, since it was in the middle of the forest, and really no one but him had dared to venture so far in, but clearly, the presence of his coach heading in the same direction argued otherwise. 

Tsubasa knew that he himself could make the jump. He’s done it a million times over, and made jumps much wider, after all. But the last thing he needed was the dead body of his coach at the bottom of a hole due due a misjudgment of his own accord.

“The forest reminds me of my home.”

His voice was low but soft when he spoke, as amber eyes took in the sight of the beautiful brook. There’s a wistful look in his eyes, mind not focused in the present, but in moments of the past.

“The city is lovely, and I’m eternally grateful for the opportunities given to me,” Tsubasa began, continuing to fixate his gaze upon the scenery, 

“But a bird can’t fly freely when there are skyscrapers.”

Of all things to write home about, ice skating was certainly a surprise. 

The flyer posted up on the college message board had certainly caught his attention- students of Solaris University could have reduced classes, after all. Harmony Skating Rink was in the same district as the university, so it wasn’t too far for him to get on a bike. 

So, every Tuesday and Thursday, after classes and before work, this is where he’d be. Today, however, he was here on a Sunday, since the library was closed. Seeing people skating with their friends and their kids, both with wobbly beginners holding onto the rail and experts doing elegant tricks in the middle of the rink, Tsubasa stepped onto the ice, following the people traffic. He got used to being on the ice, doing a few laps before getting more comfortable.

I... might as well try, while I’m here. 

Skating backwards. 

Taking a breath and holding onto the rail, he got into position and pushed himself backwards, using the momentum to start him off. He had gotten the hang of things initially, skating relatively well. But the awkwardness of going backwards had suddenly caught up to him, and he lost his balance, falling onto the ice. 

“I’m alright!” he assured to nearby skaters, getting back up on his feet. “Time to... to try again.”

Malcolm Graves stood behind the counter at The Oakpool Bar, smoking on his cigar. He stood there cleaning out a mug while listening to the stories that the patrons told him. This always gave him mixed feelings. He missed the old adventures of his past,, the adrenaline rush he would get. However, he also understood that this was his second chance, a way for him to start over of sorts.

Graves shady past had finally caught up to him, people were actually looking for him seriously. He had been hunted before, but never in a way like this. Priggs wanted him dead, the little bugger. He thought he’d shut up after he’d had made it clear what would happen if he squealed. He called his bluff, and this was a bluff Graves couldn’t live up to. So when he heard of the city of Solaris, a place where he could have a second chance, he took it. He picked up his few possessions he had and headed out.

Graves shook his head and looked at the person in front of him, not having realized he was there, being too lost in thought. 

“Can I help you?” He asked the person, still smoking his cigar.

A bar? Seriously? Of all places they wanted to throw this birthday party at, they chose a bar? Hell, he’d probably stay in his dorm if he wasn’t morally obligated to attend; he’d been putting off going to social events for ages now, and this time around his roommate insisted that he came. Goodness knows Tsubasa didn’t want to deal with alcohol.

...Oh well. Designated driver it is, then. Let them do whatever they want to their livers, just leave him out of it. 

And go figures, turns out he was early. Well, time to play the waiting game.

“Hm?” He turned towards the man’s voice, the smell of smoke reaching his nose. Ah, right. He had sat at the bar. Of course the bartender would ask what he wanted. 

...Well, he was parched after that speech he had to do earlier. Might as well get something.

“Ah. What non-alcoholic drinks do you serve here, sir?”

“Research... on the supernatural?” Oh no, this wasn’t a freaky cult person, was it? The last time he helped one of them out, they nearly tried to exorcise an innocent person doing their homework. 

...Still, the girl didn’t seem to be too freaky, and he’d rather not get fired from his job. 

“Follow me.” Sighing, he beckoned her with his hand, before beginning to guide her through the library.

“If I’m... allowed to ask, what exactly does this research consist of?”

     “I need to find the section about ecosystems—” He paused for a moment. “Specifically oceans? Or islands, or beaches?” The upcoming school project wasn’t as friendly as he’d hoped, and choosing this ecosystem may have not been the best idea, seeing as the info wasn’t in the textbook. 

     In any case, it may have been better to go visit the beach, he thought. But he should still bring books.

“Mm, you need the 500s, then,” Tsubasa stated, nodding his head. “The sciences.” 

How he managed to land himself in the fiction section of all places instead of the nonfiction one was beyond him, but Tsubasa’s seen much worse in the past, and shrugs the mishap off as the vastness of the library.

“This way, then.” Beckoning the other with a turn of his head, he led the other out of the fiction section and towards the main center of the library, placing the books he was carrying on a nearby cart while doing so. 

“What kind of research are you doing?” Might as well ask- could be helpful in locating the books he needed. “And why the ocean?”

     Navigating libraries wasn’t really his forte, so when Roxas ended up in the fiction section rather the ecosystems, he decided to swallow his pride and get some help. He walked about the large place for a bit, until he found someone who appeared to work there.

     “Hey, are you an employee here?” He quietly asked the silver-haired boy. “I need some help.” Hopefully this wouldn’t interrupt whatever he was doing, but it was technically the guy’s job to help people. If he worked there, that is.

“Hm?” Tsubasa shelved the book in his hands, straightening the row before turning to see who had called him. Ah. It was someone who needed assistance. No bother- it was his job to help, after all.

“Yes, I do work here,” he stated curtly. Regular protocol, nothing unusual. “How may I assist you?”

Hiyori wasn’t one for fine wines, for meals the size of half-dollars and the dreaded “idle chatter” - so she really wasn’t sure why she’d decided to attend the masquerade.

Maybe the promise of good food, or the fact that her dress was a masterpiece, or maybe she just wanted to see one of the legendary Solaris Balls, as seen in the papers, usually hosted by the rich and spectacular.

With the smallest of sighs, she retreated from her stalking of a rather wealthy-looking couple of girls who seemed to be on the cliff of a huge, dramatic argument to go restock on snacks.

Just as she emptied her champagne glass (it was full of fruit punch, but it was fancy and she had no self-control), she bumped into someone, roughly, nearly jostling her plate and cup out of her hands.

“Sorry!” Hiyori laughed, reaffirming her grip on the objects before turning to greet the person she’d hit. “My fault, I was a little distracted.”

Wait, why was he here again?

In all honestly, he’d rather be hanging out in the library or doing his college work, except... the library was closed at this time, and he managed to be so productive, he had no work to do today. 

...So really, he was just here cause everyone else was talking about it, and he had nothing better to do. 

Tsubasa straightened his tie, patting out any wrinkles in his tuxedo before staring out into the crowd of people, watching the colors intermingle and the low sound of murmurs filled the room. Everyone always seemed to have someone to talk to tonight. 

...No matter. He was used to fading into the background, being one of the crowd. Maybe if no one approached him he’d just go out and-

“Ah!” The sudden bump had caught him off-guard, and he quickly turned to find the source. 

“Oh, I see,” he stated curtly, regaining his bearings. It appeared the girl had bumped into him, was all. “You’re alright, don’t worry.” Showing a small smile, Tsubasa gave a nod to her in acknowledgement, before returning to watch the crowd. 

...And then, almost immediately, his perceptive eyes saw a change in the crowd. Someone just across the way was watching... him? No, not him. Tsubasa waited a moment, carefully tracking the stranger’s movements while being one with the crowd. 

It was her.

Realizing the situation, Tsubasa carefully slipped on through, weaving his way in and out before he reached the girl who had bumped into him earlier.

“Hey... do you happen to know the guy over... there?” Tsubasa whispered, pointing his thumb over his shoulder. “He just seemed... off, to me.”

Hungry. The familiar need for food had come and Voldo was just about ready to jump the stranger in front of him. His nose had picked up on the various smells around him, tantalizing and seeming like a delicate meal fit for a king. 

Snap. Without noticing it Voldo had gotten his leg stuck in a vine of ivy while trying to take a lunge for his next meal. Stuck for the time being Voldo let out a sling of nasty growls and groans, both from hunger and frustration. 

“Gah!” 

Alright, nope, that was the last straw. It was time to head on out of there like any rational person would do. Quickly gathering his things, Tsubasa scrambled up the nearest tree. Seeing how far the... thing went when it tried to lunge at him, perhaps it wouldn’t be so good in trees.

“What the hell, man? Who, what- just what the fuck?!”
