My birthdays have always made me feel uncomfortable. September 23 was such an awkward day to be born, especially growing up in elementary school. Other kids forgot your birthday like they lost pencils. A lot.

It’s the Virgo-Libra cusp. Virgo ends, Libra begins.

Some lucky years it’s the autumnal equinox. Summer ends, Autumn begins.

My birthday is accompanied by endings.

It makes sense that I’m a Libra. Finding the balance between endings and beginnings. The balance of transitions. Movement between life and death.

I used to think that death always followed me. I’ve been to many funerals, I’ve lost many people in my life. But maybe the endings are what precede me. I knew how to grieve before I knew my name.

I think it makes sense now. If not, it helps me sleep at night.
