I still cannot believe that I got to see Helene/Marya unashamedly make out during The Abduction. I saw it at the Tony's and thought maybe it was just for that but it wasn't! Also noticed Helene had lipstick smudged on her face after. Why isn't there more talk about this?

My jumbled thoughts about act 1 of DEH

So I’ve only watched act 1 of Dear Evan Hansen so far but… You know I would have liked this entire thing better if Evan and Connor had actually been friends? I like the sentiment of Evan seeing Connor after he falls and not feeling alone- but that is all lies!!! This entire show is based on a huge lie that grows and grows and Evan makes no attempt to stop it- he makes it grow even bigger! All this stuff about not being alone and all that- Connor had no friends, he had no “Evan.” Also that last scene of act 1???? Zoe kisses him and he has to make a choice, and then he goes for it 100%. She, presumably, sleeps with him/makes out with him/whatever under the pretense that he gave her her brother and saved the family, that he was her brother’s best friend. And Evan just went for it. Cause he is selfish and doesn’t care about other people!!! The entire time I was watching the lie just kept on irritating me more and more!!! Like you want to talk about mental illness- why not actually talk about it? Talk about Connor and his depression which (so far) has not be brought up. Whenever Evan gets nervous the audience laughs. It’s not like this “oh I’m so awkward it’s funny” kinda thing. One serious moment is when he actually falls during his speech and his face turns red and he looks like he’s about to combust. No one was laughing there. And yes, in terms of the choreography it really is people moving and stopping at different times. Also sometimes the pictures in the background are really distracting. I caught myself trying to look and see what was on the screen rather than the action. Also- so much "no homo" during Sincerely, Me. More than there should have been tbh...aren't we past all that? Reminded me that those kind of straight guys are still so prevalent...

The Usage of Gay/Homosexual/Etc in Bare: a Pop Opera

So I recently had the pleasure of listening to the original LA cast of Bare in 2000. One thing that struck me, in terms of lyrics and lyric changes and all that is the use of the words gay, homosexual, etc. Now, it seems that Epiphany has gone through the most changes, as it varies greatly in the original LA cast, to the New York 2004 cast, to the original cast recording. In the original LA cast they sing about a "homosexual in pew 3" or something along those lines. Peter's mom says that she can't believe Peter "is....well...gay." In a Ever After Jason says something about how Peter is gay and how Peter can't even say it himself. I was surprised by the amount of times these words were used. I can count on one hand the amount of times those words were used in the original cast recording. The word gay is only used once and is used by Sister Chantelle, the only time it is shed in a positive light. Matt calls Jason a f*****. In Cross Jason says "such a simple little word-never spoken, always heard." How true that is when it comes to this show, but in real life as well. There's the text post going around that says "Is he....you know...?" Because people don't want to say it. This is especially true in the Catholic Church. In the Catholic faith, you aren't supposed to proclaim that you're gay and have a label, you should say that you experience same-sex attraction. There's this avoidance of it. Even in Church, and I say this as someone who used to attend mass every week, it's only once or twice a year that same-sex marriage (and gay people are not really talked about) is brought up and the priest essentially talks about how marriage is between one man and one woman and how it needs to stay that way and tradition and all that. It's something that is known, but not brought up often and it is a result of that that many gay people in the faith keep quiet about it, not wanting to talk or being afraid to. I connected with Jason in that line. As I attended Catholic school, I had to go to a talk on love and chastity and all that. The speaker kept on talking about women wanting a nice strong husband and men wanting a beautiful wife. The idea of someone in the audience being gay never was addressed. There is this feeling of invisibility that comes along with it. Anyway, this is my long ramble that wouldn't leave my head.

The Seelie Court was less of a throne room and more like a lavishly decorated garden. The walls were all but hidden behind thick ivy, the mass of green broken up by the occasional bouquet of flowers hanging from the vines. The floor was a strange combination of grass surrounding a marble circle directly in front of the Queens throne. Made of twisting oak roots, the throne sat nestled in the base of a giant tree, which then branched out into a thick trunk embedded with stones and jewels that glinted now and then in the light. The roof was a canopy of leaves, flowers and vines hanging down to almost touch the ground, some unnatural sunlight flickering in through what space it could find. Simon was in awe.

Or, he would’ve been, had it not for the fact that it was entirely possible that he may never leave here ever again.
