Reading the golden raven and being like hey this isnāt actually that emotionally devastatingš and then the second half hitā¦
I rock climb a lot in my free time which means I am in a gym with a lot of very muscular dudes and thereās this one guy who is like 5 foot even and incredibly buff and always wears black armbands and, though he is not blond, I think you know where Iām going with this
Terrified at the possibility that Jeanās anger at Kevin is going to switch from mad that he left Jean behind at evermore to deal with Riko to mad that Kevin didnāt take him with him
The idea of Jean going to interviews now that heās not a Raven is so funny to me. Because after the whole āheās never spoken to the press we must find everything out about himā phase passes the simply about exy stage, I can so clearly imagine him pulling up to an interview expecting to talk about exy and being BAFFLED that they want to know what song heās had on repeat recently.

Feeling crazy and writing a jean reincarnation auā¦trojan jean but he remembers every single one of his past livesā¦.
Was listening to a podcast I like and they started talking about crows and I ended up falling down a rabbit hole of googling crow facts. With this new information I got struck with the realization: Jean is not a raven. Heās a crow.
Sure, if you donāt know much about birds they look identical. Theyāre both big and black. An easy mistake to make, though theyāre rather different.
Ravens are found in isolation. In forests, wildlife reserves, and the like. Crows flourish in two types of areas: 1) large, open habitats like agricultural fields and 2) urban areas like parks and city centers. Jean belongs outside of the nest and in the light of day surrounded by others.
Crows are a large bird, but theyāre smaller than ravens. The tail of a raven is tapered, causing raven tails to have a pointed end and giving an overall diamond shape to their appearance. Crows have tails that fan at the end. In addition, ravens have longer wingspans and heavier beaks where crows have shorter wings and thinner beaks which speaks to agility. Jean, like the crow, cannot be described as soft. However, in comparison to the raven, he is less harsh.
The two birds have different calls as well, which (for birdwatchers) is the best way to tell them apart. The crow has a high pitched caw, while the raven has a deeper, throatier croak. The crow call is similar to birdsong in that it is used to signify presence within a territory rather than mark it. In fact, both birds do not use their call as a way to mark territory but rather as a way to communicate with other birds of their species within the territory, specifically their families. The reason i bring attention to this point is because Jean has always been speaking in a language unavailable to his teammates. He has been using crow calls to speak to ravens that do not view him as family, in the species sense of the word. His words are only given power when he speaks to what becomes his own family, whether that be Kevin in the nest (who is also not a raven) or the Trojans.
The way that they deal with mean humans is an important point as well. Crows are extremely intelligent and inquisitive. A crow is known to never forget a face, and when encountering a mean and potentially dangerous human it teaches others in its family how to identify that human. I donāt think I need to draw the clearest line here to Jean āis Cody safeā Moreau. He speaks for himself.
My final point comes in the form of false beliefs about crows. One of the biggest beliefs surrounding them is their love for shiny objects (which i was going to evidence Jeanās experiences with bisexuality until I started to read more on it lol). However, this is a common myth. In fact, crows show little preference to shiny objects (the same is true of magpies!). It is simply a falsehood, if you would, that is believed by many peopleā¦sound familiar to any rumors floating around about Jean?
How in the hell is a crow supposed to survive in a ravenās nest?

I initially wanted to draw something that represented a bit of Jean's grief over a situation and environment that doesn't deserve it, but then this took a turn and got away from me. so. this is what I have to offer.
Rereading the sunshine court and realizingā¦Coach Rhemann knows what happened with Jeremy:
After the whole Grayson incident happens, Rhemann offers to call the police. Jean immediately refuses. Rhemann, in an attempt to convince him says āIāll send Jeremy away firstā and Jean has NO idea why thatās meant to win him over.
Obviously, the reader knows about Jeremyās aversion to the police from chapter eight, but Jeremy is cagey with everyone else, hence why Jean doesnāt know.
Which leads me to two interesting observations. 1) extremely cagey Jeremy has told Rhemann what happened which could just indicate that theyāre close, but more likely indicates that the event that involved the police happened at the banquet and there was no way to prevent Rhemann from knowing. 2) Rhemann assumes that Jeremy has told Jean about whatever incident this was as he assumes the reason Jean refuses the police is to protect Jeremy. Thus Rhemann thinks theyāre closer than they actually are which is justā¦funny.
Anyways, this leads me to a bunch of questions from who was involved, who exactly knows, how public was this event, ect ect.
Waiting for the inevitable scene where Jeremy finds out Jean has never had in n out and acts like every californian does by gasping and saying its the best and wtf you havent had it?? And when he finally gets Jean to try it Jean acts like every non californian does and is like āthis is unbelievably average??ā and Jeremy acts like Jean just lit Barkbark on fire in front of him. Like im sorry Jeremy is absolutely an in n out purist

okay so idk what meta is but listen THE DIRECTION ON DEAD BOY DETECTIVES IS FUCKING SUPERB. UNRIVALLED. AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT TO THE HELLSITE VOID. SO LISTEN.
transitions. between scenes. it's so easy to cross-fade, or just hard cut, or fade to black and then open the next scene. sometimes, if a piece of media is putting in a bit of effort, you'll see things like water transitioning to sky or maybe a background being continuous while the characters change or vice versa.
but dead boy detectives. the transitions are fucking flawless. and so creative, like everything about this show. creative transitions are difficult to do, and they keep getting it right. whether it's someone holding up a circle and that melds into the next scene where the railing has a circle in it, or the camera moving downwards from the floor in one location to under a table in a different location, or them falling out of mirrors, they take the tiniest of elements and turn them into transitions so fucking deliciously, and everything is so dynamic, both the camera and the scene.
and that makes it so much more impactful when there IS a hard cut. like in episode 5 (where the You Know What occurs with Jenny). the cut from the mascot at the high school scene to the butcher's shop is BRUTALLY hard, with Jenny again slicing into things with her meat cleaver, and it lends an extra air of violence to that meat cleaver--which is such great foreshadowing for what happens later (even the initial establishing shot of the butcher's shop at the start of the episode makes the cleaver in the sign flash red, drawing attention to it).
the direction helps the narrative so much, giving both atmosphere and foreshadowing without needing to fatten the dialogue with it.
and apart from all that just the general camerawork is so creative and helps with the campy feel of the show, with characters being bang in the middle of frames or with the camera holding a lovely shot for longer than a beat like Edwin and Niko cocking their heads to the side it's all such a lovely, choreographed dance between the camera, the actors, the set and the script and NGKKK.
