To find the most sustainable luggage brands, we looked for the following sustainability and ethics related attributes.

Materials:

We looked for durable, recycled luggage made from recycled polyester (rPET) or recycled nylon, recycled polycarbonate, and organic cotton (for softer styles). We prioritized non-toxic suitcases that avoid harmful coatings, or use safer polyurethane and PFC-free water repellents instead. Certifications we considered include GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX, bluesign®, and Leather Working Group.

Non-Toxic Coatings:

We also looked for luggage that avoids harmful chemical finishes, like PFAS/PFC-based water repellents (sometimes called “forever chemicals”). These coatings are widely used for stain and water resistance but have serious environmental and health concerns. Safer alternatives include polyurethane coatings or fabrics certified under standards like OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests materials for harmful substances. Brands that are transparent about being PFAS-free or using verified safer treatments scored higher in our selection.

Labor:

Our picks are brands that are ethical luggage makers, working with factories that guarantee fair wages and safe conditions. Many hold third-party certifications such as Fair Trade Certified™, Fair Trade Federation, WRAP, or operate under B Corp standards. Transparency and independent audits were key to cutting through greenwashing.

Climate & circularity:

Most people like a soothing warm shower after a long day.

So that you don’t get into hot water with your hot water—at least in terms of energy waste—try the following energy conservation tips:

First, dial down the temperature of your water heater from 140ºF to 120ºF. This can save up to $461 a year.

Second, make sure to invest in an energy-efficient water heater when your old one needs replacing.

In the meantime, use an insulating jacket for your old water heater to help reduce costs. This is especially useful if you’re looking for how to conserve energy during cold weather, as extra cold ambient temperatures can quickly cool all that water the boiler worked so hard to heat.

If you have a combi boiler, turning off the preheat setting will save energy (but not water).

Taking a long summer vacation, turn off the water heater so it isn’t needlessly heating water that won’t get used.

And lastly, if your water heater goes out, consider replacing it with a tankless water heater. These heat water on demand using a heat exchanger unit, instead of keeping a whole tank perpetually hot, so if you use less than 41 gallons of hot water in a day, they’re 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. If you use more hot water than that daily, they’re 8%–14% more efficient.

By eating seasonally usually means eating locally, both of which are better from health and environmental standpoints. Supporting local farmers through a farmer’s market, cooperative market, CSA, or food buying group also helps to support your local economy and the transition to more sustainable food systems.

It's summer time, so you can give it a go at producing your own food. If you have the space and time, starting a garden or raising some backyard chickens for eggs. It doesn’t get more local than your own backyard. Opt for organic wherever possible. Fewer chemical inputs are not only better for health (ours and the planet’s), but it means reduced GHG emissions, too. Regenerative farming practices also help sequester soil carbon and can help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Continuing our theme of keeping cool this summer, fridges and freezers are two of the most energy-intensive appliances, accounting for approximately 12% of total energy bills.

There are four ways to conserve energy when it comes to fridges and freezers:

1. Check what temperature they are set at. The recommended temperature for a refrigerator is 35 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit and freezers should be kept at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. To keep them from working any harder than necessary, keep fridges and freezers in a cool place, away from radiators, ovens, direct sunlight, and other heat sources. There should be a gap of a few inches on the sides, back, and top.

3. Carry out regular maintenance. Defrost your freezer every 6 months and make sure to keep condenser coils free of dust and debris by cleaning the back of your appliances regularly. You’ll be amazed how quickly dust builds up on these coils. We vacuum ours once a month since they’re front-facing and it’s still nasty!

4. Check the door seals are airtight. If the seal isn’t fully working, air can escape and your appliances will need to work harder to keep cool. This means you shouldn’t stand there with the door open staring mindlessly wondering what to boredom eat, either.

It's officially summer in most of the world and with that brings hot weather. Most of us want to have fun outdoors, but like in the winter we want to be comfortable indoors when we're relaxing or entertaining family and friends. Sometimes we can be extra generous with the temperature settings on our thermostats to achieve that comfort.

However, by minimizing or doing away with the use of your air conditioning during the warmer months is another solid way to significantly cut your home energy costs. Air conditioners account for approximately 6% of all electricity generated in the US, so learning how to save money with an AC can make a big difference. As with heating, installing a programmable thermostat helps to ensure the AC is only running when you need it.

Other ways to reduce air conditioner costs that cost a tiny bit of money include installing thermally insulated shades to blinds on windows (south-facing ones especially) and planting shading trees and shrubs around your home. This can cut costs by up to 25% and is a great way to increase biodiversity.

Around 56% of people currently live in cities globally—a percentage that jumps to 82% in North America. In our concrete jungles, it may be common to go days—if not weeks—without seeing an insect.

Remember, even in that gridlocked mess of metal and pavement, biodiversity exists. Regardless of what “local” means to you, if you want to know how to increase local biodiversity, it’s important to first get to know your local biodiversity.

You’re less likely to want to save something you don’t know. Take a walk. Visit a garden. Pack a picnic basket. Spend some time on a farm. Wander through a forest. Sit on the grass and look around you.

And, we want to know if ever thought of yourself of a mass murderer? That’s a pretty heavy question to ask for a tree-hugging blogger who wants all living things to have a chance at a sustainable future. I ask because insects are the victims of many people who practice certain behaviors. Here’s what we mean.

Pollution, like pesticides, is the second biggest contributor to the decline in insect populations. Think about it: They’re called “insecticides”—which literally means “insect” + “death.”

We already know neonicotinoids (a class of insecticides) and glyphosate (a herbicide and the most used agricultural chemical) are killing bees and worm-like creatures.

So it shouldn’t come as a shock that all pesticides and herbicides are in part responsible for biodiversity loss. Even if a pesticide isn’t designed to harm a specific insect(s), they unintentionally will harm others…

But you’re not a farmer—what can you do about the agricultural chemicals that are used? Quite a lot actually. If you’re wondering how to increase biodiversity in an ecosystem, there are two big actions you can take.

First of all, avoid spraying anything if you can. This means no weed killer and no pesticides. Either remove insects manually, deter them with strong-smelling plants, or just let them be.

Then, encourage responsible agricultural practices at a larger scale. Buy organic produce, shop from responsible local growers at farmer’s markets, and spark up a conversation with friends to get them to do the same.

We continue the theme of biodiversity because it’s really important to know how we as humans can contribute in everyday living.

Unfortunately, many insects have earned anyhe nickname: pest.

For those of us green thumbs, at the first sign of nibbled mint leaves or hole-y tomatoes, we try to evict the insects that have found their meals in our precious vegetables through whatever means necessary… even if it means using chemicals that ultimately end up on our food.

When learning how to increase biodiversity in your garden, realize that some plant damage is okay. Consider your gardening efforts as feeding you and a few insect mouths. Certain plants will also provide an ideal habitat for moth and butterfly larvae, and while this may produce some funky-looking food, you’re helping future generations eat.

You can also welcome insects by mimicking natural habitats. Incorporate native plants into your design, leave dead tree trunks to become a home for beetles and bees, mow your lawn less (or not at all), and resist swatting or smooshing when you see a bee or feel some creepy crawlies on your back.

It’s time we rewrite the insect narrative and cast them as the underappreciated heroes they deserve to be rather than the villains.

We just celebrated International Biodiversity Day a couple of weeks ago and this is a great opportunity for us to share how you can get involved in increasing our planet's biodiversity locally.

This week we want to highlight by simply eating more varieties of food can increase biodiversity.

Many of us fall into dietary patterns of meat (or tofu) and three veg. This happens to be one of the biggest reasons for biodiversity loss.

Here’s a quick snapshot of where we currently stand in terms of food biodiversity, courtesy of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization:

Throughout history, over 6,000 different plant species have been cultivated for food.

Just 200 food crops make up what we regularly consume now.

66% of crop production is for only nine crops.

33% of global fish stocks are overfished.

One-quarter of livestock breeds are at risk of extinction.

Since 1900, we’ve lost more than 75% of the genetic diversity in our agricultural crops.

This week focuses on "WHY" we need biodiversity and the first step to ensuring we work to maintain it.

WHY WE NEED BIODIVERSITY

Biodiversity is the best indicator we have of the overall health of an ecosystem. Small disruptions over time can lead to big problems. The extinction of one species can trigger a domino effect that eventually leads to the destruction of an entire ecosystem. Though small in stature, the extinction of insects may have the most significant impact on humans. The World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity, reported more than one million species are facing extinction within the next couple of decades—and half of them are insects.

This is not the first time we’ve noted that the extinction rate for insects is eight times faster than that of other animals. It’s therefore no surprise that biodiversity loss is one of six alarming breaches to critical planetary boundaries. To quote E. O Wilson, “We need ants to survive, but they don’t need us at all.”

Insects are responsible for an array of very essential services that keep us alive. You’ve likely heard that 75% of plants and 35% of food crops rely on pollinators—and that one out of every three bites would be non-existent without bees, butterflies, beetles, moths, and other insects. But insects do much, much more than that. In “Scientists’ warning to humanity on insect extinctions”, the authors list 27 services provided by insects. Like treating water, limiting erosion, and controlling invasive species, as well as commercial services such as providing new chemicals, monitoring habitat quality, and biocontrol activities.

Most of us don’t realize that insects also provide cultural services. They’ve contributed to some of humans’ most important myths and stories (who else grew up reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar?). And they contribute to our views on nature, for better or for worse. It’s clear that we have a problem. And because we as a species are the lynch pin in cleaning up our mess and ensuring we have a future, let’s move on to how we can to fix it.

When it comes to increasing biodiversity, supporting the health of our pollinators is crucial. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest and most beautiful things we can do: Choose Pollinator-Friendly Plants Depending on the country you’re living in, determine your ‘hardiness zone’ (see USA or Australia zones, for example). Then, choose plants from this non-exhaustive list that will look great in your garden and support our bug buddies: calendula, heliotrope, salvia (like culinary sage), lavender, marigold, verbena, coneflower (echinacea), nasturtium, goldenrod, cosmos, milkweed, borage, anise hyssop, yarrow, tea tree, oregano, sunflowers, aster, zinnia, bee balm, pincushion, bottlebrush, grevillea, daisy, and honey myrtle. We just celebrated International Biodiversity Day last week and this is a great opportunity to share how you can get involved in increasing our planet's biodiversity locally.

Gardening for biodiversity, specifically with the intent to increase it through an abundance of different plant species (AKA “plant diversity”) that attract and nurture various forms of local wildlife—instead of invasive species.

For example, a biodiverse ecological herb garden should contain not just annual culinary herbs like basil and cilantro, but perennial herbs (which you can also use and dry into tea) such as lavender, calendula, echinacea, and bee balm that attract native insects, bees, and butterflies. Biodiversity loss is one of the most imminent threats to our planet—right up there with climate change. In just three decades, scientists have recorded a 2.5% decline in insect numbers across 40% of species, an extinction rate 8x faster than other animals. If you think this isn’t a big deal because “they’re just bugs”, consider that insects are the foundation of life. Sure, some do more harm than good, but all living things are part of interconnected natural ecosystems. Remove one link and everything else eventually crumbles..

Humans are dependent on healthy food and the health of our food is dependent on biodiversity. Which means we’re dependent on biodiversity, just as it is dependent on what we do—or rather don’t do.

We’re either part of a thriving global ecosystem, or we’re undermining it. While we’ve been doing the latter for over a century now, there are numerous ways to increase biodiversity and start contributing to a brighter future. The geological period (the one we’re in right now, known as the Anthropocene) is marked by human activity, which according to PNAS, is accelerating the rate of extinction, potentially thousands of times faster than any preceding period. And biodiversity loss was more rapid in the past 50 years than ever before in human history.

Biodiversity loss is arguably the greatest threat we, as humanity, face, but the good news is that a seemingly small action to increase biodiversity—like providing a plant for a pollinator habitat—can end up supporting the lives of thousands of insects, birds, animals, humans, and so on. Together, we can halt biodiversity loss and improve our collective health in the process.
