something i've been having a great time writing is gai as told by random bystanders. yes i wanna hear about gai from his landlord or the manager of the bar he frequents or some civilian who saw him one time. i want to hear rumors about him from shinobi he went on a single mission with, or who haven't even met him but know a guy who knows a guy. he carries such a well crafted facade, but i want to see how people who don't know him interpret his behavior. how does he come off to someone meeting him for the first time? or someone who only knows him peripherally? his students are used to him and it's easy for kakashi to explain gai's behavior, but what about everyone else? what does he look like to people who don't know him???

i fucking hate the naruto epilogue holy moly so many unanswered questions and unresolved threads . purely because kishimoto was too lazy to write them . what was it like in the hospital after they got back to konoha? how long did theh treat sasuke before he was imprisoned ? how did rhe interactions with kakashi and sakura go ? did sasuke apologize properly for how he treated them ? how did naruto and sasuke interact now that they werent trying to beat each other up ? how did the trial go ? how did konoha as a whole feel about it ? did they explore sasukes complex feelings about konoha as an institution ? did theh ever address or take material steps to fix the structural problems and injustices in konoha ? NOPE! TIMESKIP! and hinata and naruto are in love now ans the moon is trying to kill them !

i am a supporter of the idea that after they get together kakashi is very flirty and forward with gai. partially as some kind of base instinct of having something, this relationship, that makes him feel so good, like pressing a button. but i am ALSO a firm believer that prior to this, kakashi is an absolute idiot about it. he is NOT smooth, do not let icha icha fool you, he doesn't know how to flirt. he stares at gai with his one eye scarily intense when he thinks gai's not looking instead of saying anything. he walks to gais apartment to invite him to a challenge and then panics and turns around and walks home very quickly. he sees gais naked chest in an onsen and then he avoids him for 3 days because he is plagued by pervert thoughts. etc

the important thing about naruto classic is that, since it's mostly from the perspective of a 12 year old, it makes kakashi look like a cool nonchalant guy who is mysterious and scary and eccentric but powerful and always fashionably late and a feared shinobi and nothing bothers him... and then you get more of his backstory and inner dialogue and realize he's actually a vaguely suicidal dumpster fire of a man who reads porn in public and built his moral compass off a dead child and and has never been nonchalant about anything in his entire life
