One thing I really appreciate about Bruno is that they made him sympathetic and sensitive and deeply affected by his past, but they didn't make him a complete doormat.

Loved that little moment when he gets to be like "Ahhh Bruno's so creepy he killed my goldfish!" in a tone that gets across the fact that he's so done with his neighbors' attitudes towards him.

Not to mention his big moment to shine, his attempt at confronting Alma at the river where he confidently walks up to her like "AND I dont care what YOU think of me—" before being promptly cut off by their reunion hug.

My point is that this man can be sarcastic and confrontational when it matters and it makes me so happy that he is not completely inoffensive and soft and meek. There is nothing wrong with being those things but in Bruno's case it was a nice subversion of his character archetype.
