ADULTS 1.03 | Have You Seen This Man?
BOTTOMS (2023) dir. Emma Seligman.
"Since when are you anti-leftomelets?"
A house coined term for Leftover Omeletes, their longstanding ritual where whatever leftovers from the week remained in the fridge by Sunday morning were then folded into some scrambled eggs to varying degrees of success and deliciousness.
(No food waste in this house.)
Faye was typically the more leftomelet skeptic of the two, never exactly sure of their fridge's contents--the fried rice from last Sunday had been a nice surprise, the spaghetti and meatless meatballs from two weeks before? Not so much.
She thought she'd seen Finn pull out a takeout bag that Toby had brought home from work, which usually meant good eats, but she didn't bother to lift her head up from her phone to confirm, unable to look away from the Instagram post she had in a pinched zoom between her fingers.
In it, she could clearly see just how beautiful her honeymoon looked...almost as beautiful as the woman currently getting to enjoy it with her fiance.
Ex-fiance. Whatever.
It was only at the sound of a chair scraping against hardwood that sent Faye's head jerking up, releasing her chipped thumbnail from between her teeth to follow Finn's gaze to the lone credit card on the table between them.
Oh, right. That bad idea.
"Would it make you feel better if I told you it was on sale?" She offered sheepishly, setting her phone face-down beside her long since soggy bowl of cereal with a sigh. "Look, out of everyone, Scout had the card with the highest limit on it, and she wouldn't have offered it up like that if she was really that worried about it, right? Like she probably just wants the credit card points or something."
(Which they were certainly racking up for her...)
"And not to mention that that printer is actually for all of us, so totally family card legal."
At least, that was how Nell had spun it when Faye had questioned her on the very same just the other day. It'd sounded a lot more convincing coming from her.
@eastsofeden
"No. No, I don't think it would."
Finn didn't know off the top of his head what the going rate for one of those things was — which meant that he was doomed to lose the rest of his morning to obsessive research and adding a ballpark figure to his spreadsheet titled "????" where he tried to keep track of the random items that sometimes just materialized in their home — but he was almost certain that whatever "discount" Nell managed to find was negligible in the grand scheme of things.
He could come up with at least five different arguments for every justification Faye was trying to make, but, most importantly, "What would any of us even need a 3D printer for?"
What did Nell even need it for? How much of...whatever did she need to make with it before it justified the cost?
He gnawed at his bottom lip and resisted the urge to go get his laptop.
"I just—" he picked up the credit card again, still handling it delicately, "—don't want to get Scout in trouble." Because trouble for one of them always meant trouble for all of them. (But mostly for Finn). "We need to be more careful with this stuff."
He wanted to let it go. He really wanted to be as blasé about all of this as the rest of the house seemed to be. His fingers tapped on the table in time with his internal monologue (let it go let it go just let it go) as his gaze stayed fixed on the card.
Nope. He couldn't let it go.
He leaned forward and swiped Faye's phone with the intention of doing just the lightest amount of googling to calm his nerves — "I just need to look this up really quick, okay? Just real quick" — only to be met with a familiar face when he turned it over.
His concern dissipated, immediately replaced by a different, inarguably worse kind of concern.
Finn popped out of his chair, anticipating his sister's grab for her phone before it could come, and backed up toward the counter as he zoomed in on Jamie's face, careful not to double tap.
"I thought you blocked him," he said, without looking up at Faye. "Why are you looking at this shit?"

"Okay, close your eyes."
Scout leaned forward and put a hand over Toby's eyes before withdrawing slowly, holding up a warning hand that he couldn't see. She backtracked toward a box in the doorway, nearly tripping over it after misjudging the distance.
With multiple peeks back up at him to make sure his eyes were indeed still closed, she leaned down and grabbed a shirt from the box. It unfurled as she held it up in front of herself, and she bounced from foot to foot with a gleeful giggle as she congratulated herself for her work once again.
The work was a group photo, with Olivia Rodrigo poorly photoshopped between Nell and Mateo, splashed onto the highest quality cotton Redbubble had to offer. Otrivia Rodrigo was written above the photo in purple Comic Sans.
God damn it, Scout. You've done it again.
"Okay, open."
"What do you think!" she asked, holding the shirt — at least two sizes too big for any of them — up in front of her. "Dope, right?"
for: @eastsofeden | esra + miles
"Wait, sorry--d'you mean that you can't skate, as in you've tried and just aren't good, or are you actually telling me right now that you've never been skating before like, ever?"
Oreo milkshake dribbled onto the table from the fries currently hovered in front of Esra's mouth, quickly abandoned in the face of the much more urgent matter at hand.
"Miles!" His lack of an answer was just as damning as if he'd given her one, doe-eyes growing even wider. "You're joking...you literally work at an ice rink!"
(As far as she was concerned, that was like being lactose intolerant and working at an ice cream shop, or at Disneyland but not being able to ride the rides.)
Still in disbelief, Esra popped her now soggy fries into her mouth and collapsed back against her side of the worn booth, head shaking as she processed this new information.
"You know what this means, don't you?"
"No, okay— just let me explain."
There really wasn't one that would make Miles seem like less of a loser — not that he'd been doing a great job of that so far anyway (unbeknownst to him, there was marinara sauce drying on his shirt collar at that very moment) — but he sputtered a little as he tried to come up with one within the span of a few seconds.
Ah, fuck it. Honesty was probably the best policy on a first date.
His head dropped into his hands for a second, and he confessed with his eyes poking out from between fingers.
"If you haven't figured this out by now, I'm a deeply uncoordinated person. I have tried it. Once," that was tacked on with no shortage of sheepishness. "But I just hugged the wall the whole time until my mom felt bad and let me sit out."
She'd also bought him a hot chocolate for his troubles.
The suggestion had him opening and closing his mouth, lips pursed, not unlike a fish. "No. Noooo, no no no. You don't want to see that. No one wants to see that. That's a trip to the emergency room and the last of my dignity—" he waved a hand and made a whoosh sound, "—out the window. Is that what you want for me?"

"Eve, stop being a bitch. Just go talk to her."
Evie's lips pressed into a thin line as she looked across the bar for the umpteenth time at the woman who'd stepped off stage... it couldn't have been more than twenty minutes ago, but it felt like hours with the add mental exhaustion of deciding and then deciding not to approach her a thousand times a minute.
"I just don't want to be...that guy. Everyone in the room wants to talk to her right now. And what if she's already dating someone? What if—"
"Oh my god, I'm over this. Hold my beer." Her friend shoved her (empty) glass into Evie's chest before getting up and marching straight across the bar, Evie's nonononono Nat please god no falling on deaf ears.
The rest happened in slow motion. Evie watched Natalie tap the singer — she'd introduced herself as Twyla at the top of her show — on the shoulder, then point to where Evie was trying to disappear into the wall.
She blinked, and then Twyla was in front of her. Evie heard her teeth click together audibly with the force from snapping her jaw shut. Over Twyla's shoulder, Evie could see Natalie grinning and mouthing a smug "you're welcome!"
Okay. She could do this. She knew how to do this. She knew how to talk to people, even if they were beautiful and wrote songs that made Evie feel like she was floating.
"Hi. I think I'm supposed to say something like...everything my friend told you is a lie. It's pathological, actually, and I'm kind of worried about her."

"You ever think this is a bad idea?"
With two omelets left unattended on the stove and almost certainly getting a little too brown on the undersides, Finn's attention was directed toward the fridge.
Underneath layers of unpaid bills initially put up to remind someone to pay them (it would probably end up being him), photos, and magnetic poetry that currently read "wine is good, more please," was Scout's credit card. The family credit card, as they liked to call it.
He pushed a few things aside and pulled it out from under a souvenir magnet from the Art Institute before sliding into the chair across from Faye and placing the card on the table between them delicately, like he was handling a bomb.
(He had beef with whoever had the bright idea to put it directly under a magnet — that was definitely bad for it — but he'd bring that to one of their next house meetings).
"I mean...cool of Scout and all, but...who's paying this off? What are, like, the boundaries? I'm pretty sure Nell used it to buy a 3D printer the other day."
