A/N: I disappeared from posting because, well, I had no will to write, I was in a rut. This is purely self soothing at this point because this is what I need right now. I promise that I have updates for the series soon, I just needed this first.ย
This was excellent. I love that he not only came but he stayed with her so she could sleep. My favorite was when Bucky said,
โI think of you every day. Youโre my first thought when I wake up and the last one before I try to go to sleep. I want to help you, and before you even start with the whole, โyou donโt have to help meโ bullshit, I want to help you.โ He paused, moving the hand under her chin to thread his fingers through her hair as he looked over her weary face. โYou donโt have to do this all on your own, my love, let me help.โย
I felt what the reader was going through many times and itโs always comforting to hear words that ease my mind.
Aww tysm for the kind words!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Those were all things I wish I had when I was going through it, I hope this brought you some comfort.
Please make sure to check all warnings before reading. But if you do enjoy a story, maybe leave a comment and reblog to support your local neighbourhood fic writiers.

The mission was a disaster. Not only had they just got their asses kicked, but they also had to deal with the Bullshit from John Walker and then the country sky opened up with an early summer thunderstorm, drenching the two men with its torrential downpour.ย ย
โWe are hours away from the nearest safe house.โ Sam sighed, looking at the database.
ย Bucky looked over at his teammate, Sam was suppressing a shiver each time the wind blew. His split lip and bruised cheek getting more gnarly with each passing minute. He looked up at the sky, the dark swirling clouds showing no signs of letting up any time soon. Fearing for Sam's health and with no other option in sight, Bucky let out a sigh.ย
โI know a place.โ Sam raised a curious eyebrow but didn't ask any questions, the idea of a warm shelter too tempting to risk Bucky changing his mind. Bucky looked around for a moment, to Sam it almost seemed like he was calculating his location based on the landmarks before giving a little nod.
โShould be just on the other side of this field. 15-minute walk give or take.โ Bucky concluded, making his way through the field, Sam not far behind him.ย
Soon, the pair found themselves on the front porch of an old country farmhouse, the white porch swing swaying violently as the storm picked up. Bucky reached for the doorknob before pausing and looking over his shoulder at Sam, fixing him in his infamous glare before uttering a low warning.ย
โNot a word of this to anyone. You hear me?โ
Sam was used to Buckyโs gruffness at this point in their partnership but this was a new level of protectiveness that he hadnโt seen before. He raised his hands in a placating motion before agreeing.ย The tension that seemed to be permanently engraved in Buckyโs form disappeared as soon as he stepped through the door. The sound of their entrance caused a woof to erupt from a room on the other side of the downstairs. Bucky toed off his boots, motioning for Sam to do the same when a rusty-colored dog came rushing into the room through a dog door barking his head off.ย Bucky let out a chuckle, catching Sam by surprise, watching as Bucky then crouched down to greet the dog.
โHey whiskey, itโs just me bubba.โ Bucky cooed, scratching the pup behind his pointy ears.
โWhereโs your momma little man?โ Bucky asked the pup, removing his hand as the dog darted off back through the dog door before poking his head back through, watching the two men.ย
Bucky stood, and followed after the dog, waving Sam along with him. The pair walked through a second door and they were both hit with a wave of warmth, causing Sam to let out a little sigh. The house smelled of cocoa and sugar, the sound of the storm outside blending into the calming atmosphere while a record played in the background. Just as Bucky was about to walk through a little hallway, Sam caught his shoulder, turning Bucky to look at him.
โMan, where the hell are we?โ He asked, and then nearly fell out when he saw pink flush the ex assassins cheeks.ย
โUh, this is my home. I uh, I live here.โ Bucky mumbled shyly refusing to look Sam in the face. Sam raised an eyebrow.
โYou live here on your own?โ He pressed a little further. Bucky shook his head.
โNah, I live here with my girl.โย
A person appeared from around the hall corner as if on cue, the little red dog hot on her heels. She looked at the two men, her gaze fixing on Bucky. She smiled at him sweetly, brushing her hands off on her apron, leaving floury handprints in her wake.ย
โBucky! Youโre home!โ She waltzed over to him and pressed a kiss to his cheek, pulling back realizing how cold his skin was.ย
โJames youโre freezinโ and gettinโ water all over my hardwood floor.โ She scolded him a country accent slipping out as she spoke. She then noticed Sam standing behind him and pursed her lips before fixing Bucky in a glare.
โYou brought company over here in an even more sorry state than you and havenโt offered him anything to dry himself off or a fresh change of clothes!โ She proceeded to chase the two men up the stairs giving strict instructions to change and dry off while she put a pot of coffee on.ย
Sam let out a chuckle as the woman made her way back to where he presumed the kitchen was as the pair made their way upstairs.ย
โSheโs a spitfire huh?โ Sam asked, taking the change of clothes from Bucky who just shrugged slightly, a soft smile decorating his features.
โYeah, you could say that.ย
Now in dry clothes, the two men wandered into the kitchen right as she pulled two batches of brownies out of the oven. She looked up after setting the brownies on the counter, giving a nod of approval seeing the men in a more presentable state. She wandered over to a cabinet throwing it open and reaching for the coffee cups on the top shelf, just out of her reach when Bucky appeared behind her, pulling them down from the shelf and placing them in her hands.
She smiled sweetly up at him before standing up on her toes and planting a quick kiss on his lips.ย
โThank you darlinโโ She smiled softly.
โOf course doll.โ Bucky smiled right back, stepping out of her way as she moved away to pour the coffee.ย
โSam? How do you want your coffee honey?โย She called out, pulling out the cream and sugar.ย
โUh, just black is fine. Thank you-โ His words faded out, not knowing this woman's name. She handed him a mug with a chicken on it before handing another mug with a goat on it to Bucky before she spoke.
โY/n.โ She sent him a sweet smile before picking up her own mug and leaning into Buckyโs side who had lifted his arm to make room for her.ย
Sam had a smirk on his face looking between Y/n and Bucky as he spoke, โI didnโt know Bucky had a girlfriend,โ He drawled out the word girlfriend, watching Buckyโs cheeks get darker as he looked anywhere but at his partner as Y/n laughed.ย
โYeah, he doesnโt want to tell too many people. Somethinโ โbout worryinโ for my safety.โ She shook her head as if the thought of Bucky trying to protect her made her laugh.ย
Sam nodded in an understanding fashion. โDoes anyone know about your little secret Buck?โ Sam teased lightly. Bucky gave a soft smile with a faraway look in his eyes.ย
โSteve did.โ At the mention of the name, the room grew heavy with sadness. Y/n seemed to shift a little deeper into Buckyโs embrace before stepping away cutting the brownies and giving each man a piece.ย
โSo you knew Steve.โ Sam started, looking at Y/n thoughtfully.ย
โYes, I did.โ She started with a sad smile. โIt was a bad storm like today, he and Bucky showed up at my door looking like two drowned rats, thinking it was one of the safe houses. Well, they were so pitiful lookinโ that I couldnโt just turn them away. So much like you two, I brought them inside, put them in dry clothes, and made them some coffee.โย
Just then there was a knock at the door. Bucky set down his coffee cup and went to investigate, leaving Sam and Y/n alone in the kitchen. Y/n reached over the counter and placed a hand over Samโs.
โLook sugar, I understand why you did what you did.โ She said softly. โDo I agree with it? No. Does Bucky agree with it? Of course not.โ She let out a sigh before continuing. โBut I understand it. But if there is one thing I know about Steve Rogers, is that he wouldnโt have just left anyone with that shield.โ She concluded, patting his hand when Bucky let out a shout, causing the pair in the kitchen to dart to the front room.
When they arrived, there was a soaking-wet John Walker and Lamar Hoskins standing on the front porch. Y/n walked up to stand next to Bucky before looking at the two men.
โCan I help you two boys?โ She asked, glancing from one to the other. John, seeming to puff up in the presence of a pretty lady, extended his hand out.ย
โGood evening maโam. John Walker, Captain America.โ Y/n looked from his hand to his face, making no move to accept his handshake.ย
โYour name very well may be John Walker, but youโre mistaken on the Captain America part sweetheart.โ She gave him a once over before continuing, โYou look more like a sorry excuse for a rodeo clown on the fourth of July than Captain America, but either way, that didnโt answer my question.โ
She took a step up to Walker looking him dead in the eye. โCan I help you?โ John seemed to deflate, stuttering over his words trying to make some sort of logical sense. Y/n raised her eyebrows waiting patiently for this worm of a man to get his act together and with no end to his incoherent mumblings in sight, she sighed.ย
โWell, if you donโt need anything, Iโll have Hades show you out.โ She said sweetly. Bucky chuckled lightly before backing up to stand next to Sam.
Sam leaned over to Bucky. โWho the hell is Hades?โ Bucky just nodded towards the door as Y/n let out a loud whistle.
โHades! We have some guests that need to be escorted out.โ As soon as the word โoutโ left her mouth, a huge black Doberman appeared out of nowhere, growling and barking at the two men at the front door. With one loud bark, Walker went flying off the front step and back down the path to where their car was waiting, Lamar, hot on his heels as Hades bounded down the steps chasing them off with Whiskey following suit.ย
The two dogs watched attentively as the car drove off and once they deemed the men to be far enough away, came bounding back into the house, tongue lolling out of their mouths, causing the trio to laugh until the dogs were inside making a mad dash for the living room.
โBoys! You get back here!โ Y/n shouted, grabbing a towel off a nearby chair and chasing after the two soaking wet dogs. Bucky, still laughing, walked over to the door closing it before walking back over to Sam, who clapped him on the shoulder.ย
โYouโve got yourself a good one,โ Sam concluded. โDonโt let her get away.โ Bucky smiled watching on in amusement as Whiskey ran by with the towel that Y/n had grabbed to dry him off, with her hot on his heels.

women will say โhear me outโ and show u a photo of pyramid head and then tumblr users will go โthis is a perfectly normal man and an ice cold takeโ
A venture to a club for a performance โ the type that better suited the phrase โonce in a lifetimeโ โ left you with far more than you could have ever anticipated for when you step out from the double, glass doors.
The secrets within the lustful atmosphere weighed on your own thoughts, as did the vivid imagery of what happened up on that stage: the drag of heated palms over your clothes and the whispered words of praise that would fuel your sinful dreams for a time.
Only, the source of your maladaptive daydreams waited for you outside.

The crowded line around you bustled and shifted with excitement for what lay ahead in only โ you checked your phone for the time โ a few minutes. Double, glass doors artistically darkened would part to the masses, passes would be checked, and then you would be directed to and seated in your booked seats.ย
โWhat do you think theyโll be like up close?โ your friend asked from next to you, their arm looped around yours to stay close. โWhat aboutโโ
โLetโs just hope we get to see him,โ you reminded your friend. โHeโs kept a secret for a reason, no one knows if heโll be at a show until he is thereโpart of his mysterious charm, I guess.โ
As a birthday present from your accompanying friend, you were given a set of tickets to see a coveted show by the Howling Commandos โ a group consisting of a few men and their host, Natalia, travelling through the states of your home country and performing risquรฉ dances on a dimly lit stage to a crowd of howling women (and a few men, too).ย
That wasnโt what you were there for, however.ย
Within the ranks of the performers that made up Howling Commandos, was a man built like a God โ from what you had seen on their social media, you learned that he was called Sarge. He had jaw length, dark brown hair, and piercing, slate grey eyes.ย
Not much could be parsed from his lack of information โ it wasnโt abnormal to be a private performer, it was part of the allure and to gain profit, you suspected, but there was next to nothing known of the brooding mountain of a man that commanded such a presence on the stage that he was only brought out for the biggest of shows.ย
It was a little disheartening, if you were honest, that your particular show wouldnโt be classed among the bigger crowds โ the likelihood of Sarge even being in the roster of performers was slim.ย
โI donโt know,โ you mumbled, glancing around the gathered crowd. โI justโ I hope we get to see him. Have you seen the way he dances?โ
โOh, yeah,โ they replied. A strange, teasing smirk pulled at the corner of their lips, and it made you nervous for some inexplicable reason. โIโm hopeful too, babeโturn that frown upside down, itโs your birthday!โ
You managed a small nod and smile in reply.ย
Not even a moment later, the doors before you parted, opening in a wide arc to reveal a provocatively dressed woman, a staff member of the ensemble. The bass of the music from within the nightclub pounded in your chest, and your heart skipped a beat as you handed the worker your joint passes โ they flashed a wolfish smile and gestured you inside.ย
โShe was hot.โย
You snorted at your friendโs blunt commentary, though you nodded in agreement. The woman was dressed in what you could only describe as a modest corset and fishnets, topped off only with platform heels and an updo that would make a nineteen-forties housewife jealous.ย
The interior of the club was remarkably different to the outside. From the blackened windows, you could still see the dimmed glow of the neonโs that lined the outer signs and gutters of the building, but within the establishment, it was a much softer, moodier atmosphere.ย
Couches made of plush, burgundy velvet were lining booths and tables alike, while stools and tables made up the middle of the floor with a few stylistic chairs thrown among the mix. A stage, high off of the floor by at least four feet, lined the furthest and widest wall from the entrance.ย
Curtains covered the back of the wall, a combination of blacks, deep reds, and purples making up the canvas of a backdrop.ย
The music that played over the speaker sounded familiar, and you strained your ears to decipher the song โ a classic for a club hosting a stripping event, with a sultry beat that made your skin prickle.ย
โWell, well, hello there, vozlyublennyy,โ a voice suddenly called from the stage.ย
Your gaze snapped towards the source, and you found a woman standing right at the edge. Black leather met fire-red hair and lipstick; her mouth was curled in a wicked, sultry smile that turned your insides to jelly. The heels she wore made her as tall as a Goddess, and she bent her knees to squat down to better look at you. โArenโt you pretty?โ
โOh, god,โ you whined, hiding your face in your friendโs shoulder. They laughed at your shame. โCโmon, thatโs not funnyโโ
โIt is, sweetheart,โ the woman cooed, and she offered you her hand to shake; blood red nails turned her porcelain skin paler, and she had a single, silver ring on her thumb. โNataliaโpleasure to meet you.โ
You offered your name and your hand, only, she kissed your knuckles and left behind a stain of red lipstick.ย
Natalia tilted her head as she looked at your friend. โInterestingโฆ very interesting.โ Before you could question her statement, the leather of her pants creaked with the movement of her standing tall. โWhy donโt you come take a seat over here for me?โ
The chairs she pointed to were placed in the VIP section. Your heart thundered against your ribs with trepidation. โButโโ
โAw, thanks!โ your friend cried, far too enthusiastically. The grip they had on your arm was iron tight, and you had no choice but to follow the direction they frog marched you in โ straight towards the seats that screamed opulence.ย
โWhat are you doingโ Weโ You didnโt pay for these?โ you rushed, watching your friend sit beside you in the booth. On the centre table was a bucket of ice and a bottle of champagne, a tray of hors d'oeuvres beside it. โThe fuck is this?โ
โJust donโt think about it, babe,โ they replied nonchalantly. A sample of food popped into their mouth, and they made an appreciative noise.ย
The sudden, mysterious determination of your friend set you on edge and made your stomach coil with anxiety. You could not figure out what they were up to, let alone having acquired such tickets to sit so close to the stage, and you realised with one hell of a start, if you reached a hand out from your set, the tips of your fingers brushed the very edge of the platform.ย
People began to take their seats with ushers directing them, and you took the opportunity to take in the interior again โ a large bar was bordered by glass shelves stocked full of liquor, from whiskey to vodka, all the way to tequila.ย
While you stared around the space, the lights began to dim even further until you could barely see the stage.ย
โHello, hello, all of my minxes,โ Natalia said, her honeyed voice blanketing the crowd and kicking up the anticipation in the air by several degrees. Spotlights suddenly illuminated her figure on the stage, and you gasped at the sight โ black leather pants accentuated her thighs and hips, and the dip of her corset in the harsh light was anything but modest. The red curls you admired moments ago sat over her shoulders.ย
The crowd cheered and whooped with her appearance; she took a bow. โThank you all for the very warm welcome, darlings,โ she cooed, the slight rasp of her Russian accent making her tone sensual. โTonight is, as you know, a very special night.โย
Her heels clicked over the stage as she strolled leisurely back and forth, holding the entire focus and attention of the patrons in her manicured hand. โWe have ventured from far and wide to come here tonight. So it is of both of our benefits if I allow the boys to start the show, but first,โ she said, coming to a halt in the middle of the stage. โSome house rules.โ
You listened while Natalia listed off the doโs and don'ts for the evening โ most of which you couldnโt believe had to be even mentioned. โSome people are pieces of work,โ you muttered to your friend. They snorted a laugh and nodded in agreement.
โAnd with all that out of the way,โ Natalia sang, and she tilted her head to search through the crowd. Her hazel-green eyes landed on you โ something behind that playful gaze caused a shiver to run down your spine. โI present, Falcon.โ
The show that Falcon put on toed the line in so many instances that the room felt like a sauna โ a few women were using their leaflets to fan themselves. You watched with heat adorning your cheeks as he bowed to the crowd, then dashed off stage, opposite to where Natalia appeared once more.ย
Her sensual smile seemed to invigorate the crowd even more, and they whistled as she slunk to the very front of the stage as the music began an interlude. โIโm sure Falcon would not have minded a louder cheer, darlings,โ she purred, arching a perfectly manicured brow.ย
An uproar of cries and screams made her laugh from her perch on stage. โThat was much better, excellent.โ Her heels clicked over the platform as she strutted back and forth, back and forth โ if she were a cat, you suspected her tail would be twitching with the anticipation of cornering her prey. โOur next performer is a crowd favourite, and he is eagerly awaiting his turn behind the curtainโโ
โHurry up, Nat,โ a deep voice said from behind the barrier of cloth.
The cackle of laughter Natalia replied with sent a thrill down your spine. โEasyโbe a good boy now, Nomad.โ
A blond head of hair that belonged to no other than the infamous Nomad appeared between the split of fabric, and he glared at Natalia with a playful heat that only made her laugh harder.ย
The appearance of him roused the crowd, and for good measure, he winked at a few patrons. โCome on out then, boy,โ Natalia teased. โThey seem to want youโwe must give them a show.โย
Nothing prepared you for the intensity of Nomadโs set. The sensual movements and choreography of his routine was mesmerising, and you often found yourself staring into his face as opposed to his body; those eyes never left the woman he danced over, a depth to them something only a lover would achieve.ย
By the time Nomad took a bow and strode off stage, your heart was jammed in your throat and your mind was flitting with dreams you only hoped would manifest while you slept. It was only early, though. The tickets stated clearly this show would run for at least another hour, if not longer โ you looked to your friend whose attention was wholly fixated on the stage. โWhat are theyโโ
โAh, darlings,โ Natalia called, cutting you off, and an unnatural hush fell over the crowd. Some kind of electricity shot through the patrons like a lightning strike, anticipation heavy in the air. โYou must think that tonight must be overโit is only early, I assure you, the night is young!โ
There were a few hollers in reply.ย
โYou need not fret. We have another surprise for you all,โ she soothed. Her boots shone in the spotlight as she stalked to the front of the stage, and she squatted in place. Dark eyes met yours, and your breath hitched at the way she seemed to see through you.ย
Music swelled and pounded against your ear drums, the deep bass of it taking the rhythm of your heart and twisting it to its own beat. The lights dimmed and turned red, casting Nataliaโs silhouette over the crowd.ย
โPlease, welcome our very own soldier,โ she purred.
A dark figure came out from behind the curtains and loomed over Natalia, even in her high heeled stilettos. They wore a cap to obscure their face; a jacket bulked their frame and covered a red henley, the first and second button unclasped to show the rounded neck of a black shirt.ย
No matter what they wore, there was no mistaking who just stepped onto the stage, and you felt what little control you had over your body slip through your fingers like sand.ย
Beside you, your friend grabbed your arm and shook it, squealing excitedly. โOh, heโs here!โ
You blinked, covering your open mouth with a hand โ either to clasp your jaw shut or hide your surprise, you couldnโt decide.ย
โWell, hello there, Sarge,โ Natalia greeted, and she circled him; each click of her heels loud against the floor. โI think we have a few voyeurs excited to see you.โย
Sarge raised his head to observe the crowd, eyes sharp and bright under the red light. โDa, you would be right,โ he said, face passive and void of any emotion. โI better get started then.โย
The fabric hugging his chest wrinkled with a sudden roll of his shoulders, and he moved his neck side to side โ a physical show of his strength that made the crowd squeal and shriek.ย
He did not even react.ย
That same passive stare observed the crowd before he glanced at Natalia. โUbiraysya otsyuda, Natalia.โย
Manicured nails brushed over her forehead while she saluted in farewell. โHave fun.โ
โI canโt believe this,โ you whispered in shock. The flood of heat that warmed your neck crawled its way up to your cheeks; suddenly unbearably warm while the lights overhead dimmed.ย
The vision of him on stage was otherworldly โ nothing could compare, not even the videos and pictures uploaded to social media of his performances or press. Even his accent was stronger, deeper in person. He towered on stage with his mere presence, let alone his astounding height.ย
A few patrons whistled and called for him to start, but he merely threw them a heated stare that forced them to quieten down. The respect he commanded made your stomach flutter with nerves.ย
Next to you, you felt the seat cushion shift, and your friend leaned closer to whisper in your ear, โHappy birthday, babe.โ
You blinked and looked at them with wide eyes. โWhatโ?โย
They nodded towards the stage. Confused and unable to repress the nervous shiver of being watched, you looked towards the raised platform, just as steel-grey eyes met yours. Sarge had searched the crowd like a famished wolf, and the hunger in his gaze reflected as such.ย
All of the breath in your lungs escaped in one fell swoop, the exhale turning into a squeak of shock that was not dignified. โOh, oh,โ you whimpered, moving back in your seat until your back was against the plush cushioning. โYou didnโtโ Oh noโno, I canโtโโ
The frantic pleas turned to breathless whines when Sarge smirked at you; a slight quirk of his full, pink lips that froze the world around you. His handsome features came into full view with the sudden beam of a spotlight, and you took them in โ a sharp jawline that would cut glass, paired with a straight nose above perfect lips. There was a light dusting of stubble over his jaw that offset the dark brown locks that fell to his neck.ย
People in the crowd caught onto who he was staring at, and they began to whoop in encouragement.ย
A gloved hand raised to halt the noise. โA little bird told me that tonight was someoneโs birthday,โ Sarge said, still staring straight at you. The slack in your jaw was almost painful. โAnd for the birthday girl, I have a surprise.โ
โWhat,โ you blurted.
Small giggles punctuated your stunned silence, the sudden hysterics of your friend almost made it all the more unbearable. The clarity that came with the sudden reveal hit you like a speeding truck on a highway, the mysterious change of seats; how Natalia picked them out from the crowd.ย
You turned to stare at them heatedly. โYou did this?โ
A sludge formed in your stomach when they nodded.ย
โI canโt, I canโtโ Oh, god,โ you gasped, overwhelmed with the sheer amount of emotion that coursed through you. โI canโt go up there!โ
The doubt only gave rise to a sense of confliction โ some small part of you yearned to take that stage by storm and have a dream become true, the other, however, wanted to crawl into a ball from the shame of such exposure.ย
โYeah, you can,โ your friend said, and they gripped your hand. โYouโre going to go up there and have the time of your lifeโdonโt let your fear steal this from you.โย
Lights around the room dimmed entirely, casting the stage into darkness. Over the pounding of your heart, you could hear the heavy thump of boots over wood, then a solid shadow loomed at the edge of the stage; sans cap, and hair flowing loose down his neck, the few strands that covered his face brought to life the impulse to tuck them behind his ear.ย
โIf it truly makes you uncomfortable, I will leave you be,โ Sarge offered. The gravelly tone of his voice made you gulp compulsively from a sudden dry mouth.ย
He squatted in place, the toes of his boots right on the edge of the platform โ you couldnโt help but notice the tightness of his jeans around his thighs. โOtherwise, darling,โ he continued quietly, โAllow me.โ A gloved hand appeared in your vision, and he smiled softly at you.
โIโ Oh, fucking,โ you rambled, unable to take hold of his hand. โI canโtโโ
โShe will,โ your friend interrupted, and Sarge glanced at them โ his expression had turned passive once more. โShe just needs some encouragement.โ
โOh?โ Sarge replied, a curious lilt to his accent. He stared at you. โThat I can offer.โ
The squeak of his boots sounded when he rose to his feet. His looming height only made your heart beat faster and faster against the confines of your throat โ you watched his back and shoulders move as he strode back towards the curtains.ย
The crowd was in titters of anticipation for the beginning of the show.ย
And to your utter astonishment, Sarge turned on the spot to face you, and started to shed the jacket he wore all while maintaining eye contact โ a spell you could not break, no matter how hard you could have tried, you did not want to.ย
Your jaw ached with the way it fell open in awe once the outer layer of his clothes were removed, leaving him in just his henley and undershirt; jeans hugged his thighs far more prominently now the baggier layer didnโt hide his frame.ย
โGo on,โ your friend whispered, pushing you sideways on your seat to the edge.ย
โAh, nyet,โ Sarge barked, pointing at your friend. โLet me try to convince moya malen'kaya kukla.โ
The seamless transition to his mother tongue made a small, quiet moan fall from your lips before you could bite back the impulse. Sarge, ever the cunning wolf, seemed to have heard it, regardless of the crowd of impatient patrons.
You watched as his index finger beckoned you, a come-hither motion that set the last of your reserved dignity to cinders.ย
โIdi syuda, viksen,โ Sarge called. โCome here. Kneel at my feet.โ
The pit of your stomach fell through the floor, much like your jaw, and as though you were bewitched, you rose from your seat to whoops and cheers; rounds of applause that could not be heard over the thunderous roar of blood in your ears.ย
Sarge stood on the stage, his eyes fixed on you with such intent it turned your knees to jelly, and as you reached the small set of stairs to the side of the stage platform, he moved towards you and offered a gloved hand to help you up.ย
โHere, darling,โ Sarge said softly. One hand held yours while you navigated the steep steps, the other was placed on your lower back when you reached the solid and suddenly very large platform.ย
Under the guise of directing you, he leaned in close enough for the heat of his breath to be felt on the shell of your ear. โIf it becomes too much for you to takeโwhat I am about to do,โ he clarified at your startled squeak. โYou must tap my arm thrice, like this.โ The soft tap of his finger against your arm was insistent and firm. โUnderstood, da?โ
โYโYeah, yes,โ you replied breathlessly, nodding once. โIโ Okay.โ
Sarge dipped his head low and grinned, so only you would see. โKhoroshaya devochka, lyubimyy.โ
The music swelled and trembled the floor before you could even reply to his quip, and he looked around the stage. โHmm, over there, I am thinking,โ he said quietly, and then you were moved towards the other end of the stage, his hand still holding yours. โAre you ready, darling?โ
You blinked, then hesitated a brief second. Sarge picked up on the swirling anxiety that viciously swarmed your mind and body. โRemember, you need only tap my arm three times and it stops. I will signal to Natashka, then she will take you to a quiet room to soothe you.โ
โWell, thereโs a back up plan, just in case,โ you mumbled.ย
A small smile danced on Sargeโs lips again, the same one that he held only for you back at your seat. โThere will always be precautions,โ he said, his voice thick with the accent of his mother tongue. It was endearing and you couldnโt help but feel drawn to him for how nonsensical and calming his mere presence was โ quite the opposite for what you would expect of a performer. โBesides, I do not want to frighten such a beautiful woman.โ
โOhโโ
โKneel, viksen,โ Sarge commanded suddenly. You jumped in fright and fell to your knees with little hesitation โ the rushed action made Sarge smirk. โWell done, darling.โ Leather caressed your jaw, then your chin, and his hand tilted your head up to look into his face. When your gaze met his, he winked and licked his bottom lip before he silently mouthed, โI am starting now.โ
His consideration swelled far more than your heart.
A loud voice called over the speakers, โLadies and gentlemen, letโs make some noise for Sarge!โ
The crowd roared a few decibels below deafening.ย
You watched in the sudden, dimmed lighting as Sarge turned back around and headed straight towards where he stood when he beckoned you on stage. His head was held high while he looked over the stage, and a spotlight caught his profile, sending it into sharp relief against the backdrop of crimson and purples.ย
Sargeโs beauty was unmatched by any model or actor. His side profile alone was enough to make a small, unbidden whimper fall from your lips.ย
The leather gloves that covered his hands were pulled off, exposing the skin beneath โ swirls of ink lined the back of his hands, while a few patterns stretched artfully down some of his fingers. As for the rest of the artistry that you assumed decorated his body, it was covered by the red henley and black undershirt, let alone the jeans that hugged his thighs.ย
His heated gaze fell on you as he turned to stand directly opposite you โ his feet shoulder width apart and his head tilted to the side so strands of dark hair fell over his cheek and jaw.ย
From within the crowd, you could just decipher the calls from your friend, and their encouraging cries fuelled your bravery โ a blessing in disguise, for Sarge held out his hand and beckoned you towards him, just as he had done to get you on the stage in the first place.ย
Oh, fuck, you thought.
Instinctually, or foolishly, you placed your hands past your knees and onto the stage, then lifted off of your knees โ everything in your body screamed arousal at such a dominant move. โOh, fuck, fuck,โ you mumbled at the ground. โIโm really doing this.โ
Yeah, you are, the voice replied in your mind โ it sounded familiarly like your friend that watched on.ย
One hand moved forward, followed by a knee; the other hand mimicked the firsts, then your other knee followed suit. The hard surface dug into your knees and palms, but you paid no mind to the subtle ache, your gaze too homed in upon the man that stood watching you crawl to him.ย
Sargeโs eyes bled from blue to black in the dimmed light, and he grinned; all teeth that shone white.ย
At last, you met the halfway point between your starting position, and where he watched on, when he held up a hand to halt your crawl. You sat back on your haunches and stared at him, eyes widening while he strolled forward โ all the while grabbing the hem of his henley and undershirt, pulling it up to expose a deep, defined v-line.ย
The crowd moaned and screamed in unison, but it was a dull roar of noise over your mindโs insistent parade of what it would be like to kiss the skin of his hip; how tense his muscles could get in the throes of passion.ย
Before you could even shake yourself from that particular vision, you blinked and Sarge stood right in front of you โ his very exposed hip within reach, if only you just leaned forwardโ
โGo on, detka,โ Sarge purred, tapping the skin above the belt loop next to his zipper. And the bastard teased, โYou want to, I can see it.โ The impulse consumed you like a forest fire, and your lips met the heated skin in a chaste kiss. โGood girl.โ
There was no discerning the patrons cheers any longer, the continued shouts and cheers of their voices melded into one, constant noise.ย
His fingers deftly worked the belt clasp, and you realised with an audible gasp that the black leather was branded with an inscription that sent a dull, aching throb to your cunt โ Sargeโs Girl was decorated with silver filigree and a bold, full star on either side of the words. The buckle clinked as he pulled it free, then the strap where the text sat was pushed towards your parted lips.ย
โOpen,โ Sarge ordered, and you complied without a second thought.ย
His thumb brushed over your cheekbone, and he stepped back slowly, leaving his belt between your teeth. The heavy fall of his boots copied your heartbeat, the pounding rhythm sent your head into a spell of dizziness you wanted more of.ย
Your lips moved over the strap while your tongue tasted the earthy tones of treated leather; something you needed more of.
The leather dangled down your front, the end of it resting in front of your knees โ Sarge tilted his chin up, looking down at you with an unreadable expression, as though he was contemplating something.ย
It all fell away โ the sounds, the smells, the tastes when he kneeled down on one knee in front of you, eyes bright with a sense of mischief, and a smirk that rivalled the devilโs. โLet go,โ he said, holding around the strap of his belt, right next to your cheek.ย
You bit down on the leather with a playful growl, and Sarge smirked as he pulled against your grip gently. โGive it back to me, devochka, before I tame the brat in you for all to see.โ Shock flooded your system and forced your jaw to be lax around the hard leather. โAh, there we go, Viksen. Arms out, wrists together for me.โ
Your actions fell on autopilot to obey, and you stuck out your arms, wrists together, just as he asked for. He hummed and looped the belt around them, careful of the tightness of the leather against your skin. โNow, down.โ
His hands moved you back onto all fours, the gentle grip of his hands while he did so sent a cacophony of butterflies to soar wildly in your stomach. The leather toes of his boots were all you could see when he got to his feet before, the deep, red henley fell to the floor a second later.ย
โGive it up for our Sarge!โ That same announcer voice called over the speakers, and the crowd did not disappoint.ย
Warmth spread over your waist, and you realised it was both of Sargeโs hands feeling down your sides โ one boot disappeared, then thudded as it landed on your other side.ย
He was standing over youโ Oh, fuck, you almost gasped aloud.ย
A sharp, loud shriek fell from your lips with the sudden change of altitude โ in the blink of an eye, Sarge had lifted you with both his arms around your waist. Your legs were draped over his shoulders, and his face brushed against your navel from the sudden proximity.ย
You could feel one hand splayed over the middle of your back to steady your frame and prevent you from falling backwards, though it did nothing to alleviate the rush of adrenaline through your body at suddenly being held in the air, with your thighs either side of his head, by one of the most handsome men youโve ever seen in your life.ย
โOh my god!โ You scrambled to grab at his neck before you could master the impulse, and all you felt was the soft, brown locks of his hair in your fingertips. There was a hot breath on your stomach through your shirt, and the broad shoulders that held you so securely in the air shook up and down โ Sarge was laughing at your fear, the bastard. โWhatโ!โ
Sargeโs other hand that was held to the side in a show of strength, brushed over the seat of your pants before he squeezed. The contact sent a rush of heat through the whole of your body as you realised just how close to your cunt his mouth was in conjunction with his hand on your ass.ย
The crowd was still whooping when he fell to one knee and twisted in place, so you lay across the stage โ his hands wandered from your back to your knees. You could only see the wicked, hungry grin on his mouth when he peered around your calves; he arched a brow and licked his lips, carelessly fuelling the fire between your thighs.ย
Your wrists rubbed against the leather strap of his belt, and you subconsciously whined โ you wanted to touch, to feel his strength under your fingertips.ย
โEasy, darling,โ Sarge purred. โYou will have your fill, obeshchayu.โ
The buckle of his belt clattered to the floor with surprising speed, though you didnโt have time to linger on the newfound freedom โ Sargeโs slow thrusts against the back of your thighs made a dizzy spell hit you with such force you almost passed out right then and there. โSargeโ! Fuck.โ
โNot yet,โ he rasped back.ย
You squeaked and looked down at him with widened eyes โ the black of his pupils painted over the grey, bleeding profusely over the once calming seas of his irises.ย
All of your insides squirmed and vanished with the heat of his stare, and before you could even blink yourself back to reality, you were sitting in a chair on the stage with Sarge in front of you. His stature loomed over you and blocked out the patrons that cheered behind him โ feet shoulder width apart and hands on your cheeks to tilt your head up.ย
The gentleness of his hold replaced the fire in your veins with an unexplainable adoration.ย
โLyubimyy, are you with me?โย
โYeahโ Yes, I am, justโโ You stammered, blinking fast. โI got a bit flustered.โ
Sarge grinned. โI knowโit was sweet. So easy to entrance, hmm?โย
โHeyโ!โย
โI joke, darling,โ he teased. โI am almost done with you. I know you are eager to join your friend again.โ
The music swelled over the speakers, the beat and bass reverberating deep in your chest โ it didnโt feel like you were on the stage of one of the most prolific nightclubs of your city with a stripper performing with you, let alone talking to you in such a tone of hunger.ย
You had watched all of Sargeโs performances reverently, far more than you would ever admit, and never before did he treat a patron to such intimacy.ย
His press gave the same impression of stoic and blithe interest. Never one to talk unless questioned โ Sarge was a quiet one, but yet, here he was, speaking to you with a reverence of what youโd expect from a lover.
Something tugged and pulled in your stomach with that particular realisation.ย
โAre you ready?โ Sarge asked quietly, leaning in close while still moving his body to keep the crowd entertained. His eyes were clear and narrowed in on your features, darting from your eyes to your parted lips. โI will stop if you are overwhelmedโโ
โNo, no,โ you rushed, and you reached for him on instinct โ a reassuring, grounding presence the beacon you didnโt know you needed. โIโm okay, please.โ
โAs you wish, viksen,โ he replied. โFollow my lead.โ
The skin of his palms felt rough over your own hands, and he guided them to his chest, covered only by the dark undershirt โ you realised it was a tank as opposed to a shirt. He turned on the spot and fell to his knees, boots tucked beneath the seat you were perched on, and his hands guided yours to the neckline of his shirt.ย
โWeโre in the final stretch,โ the announcer called over the cheering crowd. โLetโs give it up one last time for Sarge!โ
Your fingers were squeezed by Sargeโs palms, the grip firm as he pressed your hands into his chest while manipulating the thin cloth into your fist. He looked at you over his shoulder with a sly smirk. โHave your fill, darlingโpull.โ
The fabric tore away with ease under the combined efforts of Sargeโs strength and your hands โ black cloth revealed a chest covered in artistry, rippling with the movement of guiding you to strip his chest bare.ย
A small moan fell from your lips and into his ear.ย
โSettle,โ he murmured back with a wide smirk.ย
You gulped while he turned his head to look out into the crowd, and the smirk he threw you morphed into a grin while he slowly moved his hips back and forth โ a show far too intimate, but you could not look away. The low position of his beltless jeans left little to the imagination.ย
โNow you can return to your friend,โ Sarge said lowly, helping you up from your seat while your legs shook. โYou took it so well, darling. Come.โ His warm hands guided you to the edge of the stage, where the stairs were situated, and he took each step down with you.ย
Your heart thundered and skipped the longer he stayed beside you, and finally, he helped you to your seat before moving your hand to his lips. A soft kiss brushed against your knuckles, and he smiled softly. โGoodbye, viksen.โ
You watched him turn back around to walk back up the stairs, the muscles of his back and shoulders tensing and rippling with each step, and the time passed in a daze from that moment onwards.ย
Through the hazed lust, you barely acknowledged your friend who welcomed you back to the table with eager chitters and whispered demands after Sarge disappeared from the stage through the side exit.ย
The feel of his hands on you lingered, even after the soft touches of him guiding you back to the sanctuary of your occupied booth, and you found you didnโt want that sensation to ever leave.ย
The last of the performers dwindled on stage while patrons shuffled around to gather their belongings. It wasnโt often that the Howling Commandos lingered at a venue, given they were a sought after group of performers, they often had tours that were demanding beyond reason โ though it was different this time.ย
After following them for so long, it was rumoured and then later confirmed on social media, that this show was the last for them for some time โ no one knew for sure how long their rest would last, but it was well deserved regardless.ย
It was how you found yourself bouncing on the balls of your feet in anticipation beside the stage. Nomad, Falcon, and Natalia were mingling amongst the crowd for photo opportunities for the lucky few who purchased the extra bonus of a meet and greet.ย
You were not unfortunately one of the few, as much as you wish you were โ the treat of being brought on stage was already too much for you to cope with and process.ย
The sound of footsteps of giggles emanated from your left, and you glanced over to find your friend on the approach. โYou good?โ
โYep,โ they said, popping the โpโ. โLetโs go get some drinks!โ
โButโโ You tried to protest, but it was of no use โ the grip your friend had on your arm was tighter than a vice as they dragged you out of the door and into the street. The night life of the strip of nightclubs was wildly alive with partying crowds and drunkards stumbling all over the place. โOh, hell. Do we have to?โ
They looked from left to right with a tight grimace pulling their expression taut. โI mean, noโ Oh.โ A scarily menacing smirk danced on their lips, and just as they opened their mouth to speak, they were cut off by a shout.
โViksen!โ
You whipped around to search for the source, when your mouth fell open in shock. Down the closest alleyway, leaning against the brick wall of the club he just danced in, was Sarge โ a freshly lit cigarette dangled from his lips while the rings on some of his fingers glinted from a flickering streetlight opposite where he stood.ย
The black V-neck shirt and leather jacket bulked his frame even more than the hooded get up he wore for his performance, and he still wore those tight jeans and boots.ย
Smoke billowed from his mouth and nose while he threw the cigarette to the pavement, where he scuffed the lit end with the toe of his boot. โI never thought I would see you after the show,โ he called, and he strode forwards, hands tucked into his jacket pockets. โIt seems luck is on my side tonight.โย
The closer he came, the more your insides melted โ while he looked nothing like he did while he performed, he still exuded a lethal confidence that cut your resolve to shreds, and that smile of his didnโt help, not one bit.ย
Your friend suddenly gripped your arm and rushed, "I just remembered I'm staying with a friend tonight. Can you make it back home safe?"
โIโโ
Sarge stepped closer and tilted his head. The passive line of his mouth while he looked at your friend smoothly changed into a softened smile when he met your gaze. โI will take you home, darlingโif you would like?โ
The pocket of his jacket chimed with the sound of keys. โI did not park far from the club, and I do not tend to enjoyโฆโ He looked back towards the club where his fellow performers lingered behind. โI prefer to selectively spend my time with those I choose.โย
โWellโโ
Brown strands of hair fell forward as he looked to the floor, his posture turning open with the sudden show of bashfulness, and under his breath he spoke, โIdeal'noy byla by kompaniya krasivoy zhenshchiny, a ne etikh idiotov.โ
You swallowed around the slither of fear that clutched your stomach in a vice โ being alone with the man you were beginning to form a crush on was not ideal, not without preparation or a wingโย
From the corner of your eyes, you saw your friend staring at you pointedly with wide eyes. Go with it, they urged, unspoken and greedily.ย
A deep breath rose your shoulders shakily. โYeah, thatโ That would be nice,โ you replied softly. โI, uhโ I donโt live too far away.โ
Sarge looked up with a blindingly bright smile, and it made your stomach flip and riot in place. โGoodโthat is good.โ He looked at your friend again โ you couldnโt help but feel heartened by the plain stare he gave them. โDo you have a way to get to your friendโs home?โ
โIโll call a cab.โ
โI will wait with you,โ Sarge said, and he set his shoulders. โI cannot leave you without knowing you will get there safely.โ
โA real gentleman,โ your friend teased while their fingers flew over the screen of their phone. To your horror, they glanced up at you and smirked. โI like him.โ
The air rushed from your lungs in a shocked exhale while Sarge moved inexplicably closer at the statement, his arm brushing against yours in a feather light touch. He didnโt move to rebuke their words, nor did he make any noise of acknowledgement; eyes intently scanning the surrounding crowds as he would if he were guarding something precious.
It was a comfortable silence that stretched between the three of you while you waited curb side for your friendโs lift to arrive โ a surprise that you would chew them out for endlessly later, but you were nonetheless nervous to be left alone with the mountain of a man beside you.ย
Passersby paid no mind to you as you waited there, surreptitiously shuffling your feet in place to inch closer towards Sarge. The warmth he emanated drew you in and you couldnโt resist the temptation to just be close โ no matter the people around you, or the way your friend kept flickering their knowing gaze to you, a slight smirk still playing on their lips.ย
โOh, here we are,โ they said suddenly, their head turned towards the road where a car was starting to pull up. โMy rideโperfect timing.โย
Sarge moved forward and opened the back door wordlessly, inclining his head in farewell but uttering no words in their parting. You hugged them goodbye and tucked your chin into the juncture of their neck and shoulder. In your ear, they whispered, โBe safe, have fun; wear protection.โย
โCome on,โ you hissed, pulling your lip up in a grimace. โThatโs not fairโโ
They hugged you tighter, not allowing you to pull back from their embrace. โHave you seen the way he looks at you? The way he offered to take you home?โย
You hesitated, but you truly could not see how it was any more than just friendly interaction. โNoโฆโ
โEnjoy his attention, babe,โ they said softly, rubbing their hands up and down your back. โJust text me when you get in his car and then again when you get home. I want to know how he kisses you.โ
Before you could scold them again, they pulled back and skipped to the open door of their lift. They looked up at Sarge and smiled. โTake care of my girl, yeah?โ
โShe will be safe,โ Sarge replied simply. โI would not let anyone hurt her.โ
Heat flooded your stomach and crawled up your neck while Bucky shut the door gently behind them. Through the tinted window, your friend waved goodbye, and you did the same as they were taken away; swept to their own respite and leaving you to fend for yourself against the butterflies that ran riot through your whole body.ย
The carโs tail lights disappeared around the corner at the other end of the street, and with it, your courage. It was suddenly overwhelmingly nerve wracking to be standing there next to Sarge, the cold breeze of the night biting through your poor excuse of warmth as an outfit. Your arms moved to automatically cradle your front, your hands gripping your biceps, when Sarge spoke, โAre you cold, darling?โ
You blinked and met his gaze. โNo, no, Iโm okay,โ you lied.
Sarge tilted his head, the strands of dark hair brushing against his cheek and brow. โYou are not a very good liar.โ
The words were said in such a deadpan statement it made a laugh erupt from you, and that made a smirk pull at Sargeโs lips โ one that he reserved for only you. โAlright, yeah, Iโm a bit coldโโ
You couldnโt even finish your admission before a jacket โ Sargeโs leather jacket โ appeared in front of you. โHere, it will keep you warm. I cannot allow you to be in any discomfort, not if I am able to prevent it.โ
โButโโ You tried to protest, looking at him with widened eyes. What you wouldnโt give to wear that jacket, be enveloped in his warmth and distinct scent that filled your senses to lift you off your feet, but then he wouldโ โBut youโll get cold too!โ
Sarge narrowed his eyes and frowned. โTakaya upryamaya zhenshchina.โ The gravel of his voice sent a shiver entirely unrelated to the sudden chill down your spine. โYA tebya obozhayu.โ
โHey, I donโt speak Russian,โ you whined, pouting at him. โWhat did you say?โ
Sarge only chuckled and shook his head while he placed the jacket gently over your shoulders, prompting you silently to slip your arms into the sleeves. โNever you mind, Malen'kaya Lisa.โ
โStubborn asshole,โ you teased half-heartedly, though you burrowed into his jacket with a hum of contentment.ย
โMe?โ Sarge laughed, and he took a single step back after adjusting the collar to better sit on your smaller frame. โHow am I stubborn when you are shivering and refuseโ Ay, moy bog, you are too adorable.โย
The way his eyes brightened as he looked down at you suddenly hit you hard โ the force of it leaving you breathless. Maybe your friend was rightโฆ โSo,โ you began nervously, and your hands fidgeted with the cuffs of his jacket.
Sarge smiled softly. โI did not introduce myself.โย
โYou donโt go by Sargeโโ
โNyet,โ he laughed again. โNo, darling. That is the name for the stageโonly for my performances.โ
โOh.โ The warmth from his jacket suddenly grew overwhelming with your embarrassment. โI didnโtโโ
โDo not worry, Malenโkaya Lisa.โ Sarge grabbed your hand and moved the cuff of his jacket from the back of it, where he placed a soft kiss. โMy friends call me Bucky, if you so wishโ Actually,โ he paused for a second, then, โPlease, call me James. Sarge and Bucky are for everyone elseโvy zasluzhivayete chego to svoyego sobstvennogo.โ
โI have no idea what you just said,โ you replied with a nervous chitter wavering in your voice. โBut, okay, Jamesโnice to finally meet you.โ The smile James gave you when you offered him your name made the butterflies ditch the fluttering riot for absolute pandemonium.ย
โLet me take you home, darling.โ James took a step closer. His arm went around your shoulders. You let out a breath when you were pulled into his side โ the comfort of being so close enveloped you, and โFirst, I would like to accompany you for a stroll. The night is young, viksen.โ
You couldnโt help the snort of laughter at his words, and the blinding smile you received in return lit you from the inside out โ you would do anything to see it again. โAre you trying to be old fashioned?โ
James looked at you with a quirked brow. โDid it not work?โ
โMaybe it did.โ
โNu, krasivaya devushka.โ He leaned in close, his lips dancing over your temple, where he placed a soft kiss. The hot gust of his breath tickled your ear. โAllow me the pleasure of you on my arm for the evening.โ

Bucky was going to kill him. Steve had promised an easy in-and-out mission, something low stakes to get back into the groove after some time off in Wakanda. This was everything but that. Bucky was snapped out of his murderous thoughts by a bullet whizzing by his head, making him curse as he sped up. These HYDRA soldiers were hot on his tail, and not letting up. It didnโt help that he had been hit, the pain coursing through his right thigh a constant reminder of the bullet lodged in the flesh. As he tumbled through the treeline into a clearing, he saw an old barn, the moonlight reflecting off the tin roof seemed like a beacon of hope. Without any other options, he skillfully hopped over the fence, ducked into the barn, held his breath, and listened. The soldiers came exploding through the treeline and stopped, seeing no sign of Bucky anywhere. Bucky listened carefully as he heard them approach the barn and stop. Their boots crunched on the fallen leaves as they circled the barn. His heart was in his throat, blood rushing in his ears but after a moment that seemed like forever, they left. Bucky didnโt move for almost an hour, listening and making sure that he was in the clear before he pulled out his transponder. He looked down to activate it and saw that it had been trashed by a stray bullet. He groaned out a curse and threw the useless device across the barn. He tried to stand but the pain in his leg prevented him from supporting any weight so he pushed himself up against the wall, deciding that heโd just rest for a bit.
He was on the verge of sleep when a song started to flow through his mind, louder than it had been since, ever, causing him to startle. See, everyone had a soulmate, something Bucky never believed in, having never heard any music in the 40โs. After he fell off the train, he figured whoever they were would be long dead by now. However, since coming out of recovery, he started to hear the music again. Part of HYDRAโs programming, he found out, was to block the music that would be pumping into his mind from his soulmate but now that he was free from all of the things that HYDRA put in his head, he started hearing music. He didnโt think much of it, as it was always quiet and in the background like a thought, but this song was so loud that it sounded like it was being whispered in his ear.ย
โLet's get out, we can leave this city. Let's drive to the open air. Yeah, the countryside is so pretty. With the wind blowing in your hair. We can look back someday Baby, don't you understand? That we only get one love, I wanna make it count. Honey, come on now and take my handโ
It was a soft melody, the gentle guitar soothing his frayed nerves, and just as quickly as it startled him awake, it soothed him back to sleep.
He was woken up by something cold and wet nuzzling into his cheek. Bucky groaned and tried to shift away from the intrusion but he was too stiff from his awkward sleeping predicament to move very fast. Swatting at whatever the hell was messing with him, he was greeted by more music flooding his senses. This time, even louder than the last. The guitar was vibrating his bones and the drums rattling his teeth when all of a sudden there was a gasp and the music promptly stopped.ย
โJake! Get away from him! Jesus, hey guy, are you ok?โย
A panicked voice called out as the presence next to him disappeared. Bucky shot open his eyes and shot up into a position ready to defend himself when he saw a woman staring at him. Her light blue button-up was tucked into a pair of old worn-out jeans with a dark belt securing them in place around her hips. A large black and white dog was standing at her side, tail wagging furiously back and forth as its warm brown eyes stared at him.ย
Bucky blinked, all the memories of what happened yesterday came flooding back into the forefront of his brain.
โUh- yeah, I uh- I think so.โ He groaned, his leg screaming at him in pain causing him to hiss out in discomfort.ย
โAre you sure? You donโt seem like it, here, let me help you.โ The woman walked over, tucking an arm underneath his and wrapping it around him, hoisting him onto his feet and leading him to a bench on the other side of the barn. She gently placed him down and ran her eyes over him when she noticed the dried patch of blood on his thigh.
โShit, have you been shot?!โ Bucky was too busy gawking at how stunning this woman was to notice that he was bleeding again, her words caused him to look down where she was staring.
โOh. Yeah, I guess I was. I kind of forgot about that.โ Bucky shrugged as he watched the woman wander off to another area.
โHow in the hell do you just forget that you were shot?!โ She called out in between the slams of cabinet doors. Bucky took a deep breath, opening his mouth to respond when he noticed the dog, who he presumed to be the โJakeโ the woman had called out to, resting his head on Buckyโs non-injured thigh. He ran his fingers through the soft silky fur of the pupโs head, looking back up when he heard the woman's rapidly returning footsteps. She appeared from around an old tractor, med kit in tow. She saw the dog vibrating happily underneath Buckyโs attention and smiled softly.
โJake! Leaveโฆโ She paused looking at Bucky for his name.ย
โBucky. You can call me Bucky.โ She smiled.
โY/n. Nice to meet you Bucky.โ Buckyโs heart flipped in his chest at the sound of his name rolling off her tongue. His eyes followed her as she crouched down next to him, placing the med kit on the bench.ย
โAre you ok with me taking care of this or would you rather do it,โ Y/n asked as she began to rifle through the box looking for all of the necessary supplies. Bucky was shocked, she just found this strange man in her barn and was going to help him out instead of calling the cops. He realized she was waiting for an answer, her eyes full of worry staring at him, waiting for an answer.ย
โOr, um, I can take you to the hospital, but that's a bit of a drive.โ Bucky just shook his head.
โNo, no. Itโs fine. If you leave the supplies here I can take care of it. Thanks.โ Y/n nodded standing up.
โOf course! Iโll get you a change of clothes. My brother left some clothes here, heโs about your height. Hopefully, they fit.โ
Before Bucky could say anything else, Y/n walked out of the barn and disappeared, leaving Bucky alone with Jake and a med kit. Bucky gave the dog a final pet before tending to injury.
Once, he was cleaned up and in a fresh pair of clothes, Y/n brought him to the little farmhouse for some breakfast. Bucky sat on a stool watching Y/n cook.
โSo how did you end up in my barn? Itโs not every day that I get up to start chores and find a man in there.โ She asked, flipping over the pancake in the skillet. Bucky chuckled scratching the back of his neck, trying to decide what to say.
โWell, uhโฆ Itโs kind of a long story...โย
A few days had passed since breakfast that morning, him spilling his entire life life story to this woman. She promised to try and help him get back to his team, however, the first snow of the season had fallen that same evening and there was no way for them to drive to the town some thirty miles away with the ice and snow covering the roads.ย
โBeing in the middle of nowhere has its advantages and disadvantages.โ She had told him, shoveling a path out to the barn the next morning. โThe fact that no plow trucks come through here just happens to be one of the shitty things.โย
Bucky felt strange just sitting around while she worked so he offered to help out while he was there. A sort of thank you for inadvertently saving his life. The more he worked around the farm, the more music he heard playing through his mind, but every time he tried to find the source, it would disappear and Y/N would appear from around a corner, tucking something into her pocket and then asking Bucky a question as she approached.ย
The same thing was happening again as Bucky heard the first few chords from a new song drift into his mind, the same volume as the song that first night he slept in the barn.
โFell in love with a girl that's a few years younger. Was a sister of a friend, didnโt see it coming.โ
Bucky set down the bale of hay he had started to take to the horses, to follow the music. He walked over towards the door of the barn, the music getting louder with each step he took.
โI was hanging with him when I heard the door open.โ
He pushed open the door and looked out to see Y/n and Jake walking towards the barn. She had earbuds tucked in under her hat, humming softly, and with each step she took towards the barn the louder the music in Bucky's ears got. He felt his heart start to race, his mouth ran dry.
โShe walked into the room with a smile and thatโs when, her eyes looked at me and said quietly,โ
Y/n looked up to see Bucky staring at her and plucked the earbuds out of her ears and tucked them into her pocket, the music playing in Buckyโs mind disappearing with them.
โHey, Bucky! I was lookinโ for ya!โ She smiled at him, continuing to walk closer. โI was wondering if you could help me with something a little different.โ She was standing right in front of him now, her bright eyes locking onto his. His pulse started to quicken as he hoped the cold masked the blush forming on his cheeks.ย
โW-what might that be?โ Y/n giggled and placed a hand on his shoulder sparks flooding throughout his body as she pushed him back into the barn.ย
โI have to round up the cows today, since itโs snowed that means all of the bot flies are gone so we can go ahead and deworm them. I was hoping you could tag along. I know youโve probably never done anything like this but it would really help me out a ton.โ She smiled sweetly at him as she paused by the tack room, heading inside to grab her saddle and other equipment for the task at hand.ย
โUh sure, Iโll give it a go,โ Bucky replied, following her into the small room, grabbing the other saddle sitting on the rack. It was then Bucky decided that he would do just about anything to get Y/n to smile at him like that again. It was so warm and bright that he felt ten times warmer than he did just moments ago.
โAwesome! Thank you so much, Buck! If you want to tack up Shanty Iโll hop on Zippy and we can go bring those cows up to the cattle shed!โย
Bucky saddled up Shanty with some difficulty due to the fact he had no idea what the hell he was doing, but with Y/nโs help, the pair were ready to go. Bucky watched as Y/n skillfully mounted the red horse who was stomping around impatiently waiting for her to get on. Taking a deep breath, he carefully pulled himself up into the saddle and nodded for Y/n to lead the way. As the pair began to jog through the snow Bucky called out,
โI hope you know I havenโt been on a horse since 1943, anโ never used emโ on a farm before so I have no idea what Iโm doinโ darlinโ.โ
Y/n let out a laugh that seemed to sing off of the ice that covered a nearby pond. She looked over her shoulder and Bucky was convinced he had never seen a more beautiful sight. The morning sun reflected off the snow, causing its golden glow to dance across the landscape. Its golden rays were blocked by the brim of her dark cowboy hat, but the leather band almost seemed to be turned into gold as the beams of light that slipped around the edges wove into the intricate braid. Her eyes sparkled with something so warm and bright that Bucky was sure he was seeing an angel in person.ย
โDonโt worry too much!โ She replied, oblivious to the effect she had on the man.ย
โShantyโs a pro. She can basically do this on her own, she just prefers having someone on her back or a little extra guidance.โ Y/n explained as the cow herd came into view. โJust point her in the right direction, she will do the rest.โย
Bucky nodded and watched as Y/n kicked Zippy forward toward the cows and once she rounded the back, the herd started running in his direction. Gripping onto the reins, he pointed Shanty in the direction and when the cows tried to jump out of line, Shanty would run and slide to a stop, forcing the cows to stay in a group as they ran towards the cattle shed.ย
The journey back to the cattle shed was considerably more work than the ride out, constantly trying to keep the frisky cows from darting off one way or another but eventually, they were all secured in the barn, Y/n smiled at Bucky.
โThank you for your help. I can take it from here. Meet you inside for dinner? I prepped some ravioli last week thatโs in the freezer.โย
Bucky smiled and agreed, leading Shanty and Zippy back to the barn, the goofy grin remaining on his face all the way there.
Bucky grumbled angrily as the wrench slipped out of his hand. He reached out from under the tractor with his left hand when he remembered that his left hand was, essentially, an all-purpose tool. After finally getting the stubborn bolt off, he pushed himself out from underneath the tractor and took a sip of the hot cider in his mug that Y/n insisted he take with him after dinner. In between bites of the best ravioli that he had ever eaten, Y/n mentioned that the tractor had a bust pipe and that he had gotten the parts but hadnโt had the time to fix it herself so naturally, Bucky set off to fix it as soon as the dishes were done.ย
Just as Bucky was about to get back to work, he heard a new melody whisper in his ear.
I'm flying, shining, bright like just like the Leonids, Heading for you.
Wiping his hands off on an old shop towel, Bucky made his way back to the farmhouse, and with each step he took, the music got a little louder.
Slowly, but surely, lighting up the pyramids, On my way to you
Kicking off his snow and mud-covered boots in the mud room, Bucky followed the sound of the music, to the back porch where he found Y/n sitting with a mug in her hands gazing up at the stars.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
The music was so loud at this point, that Bucky was convinced that it was integrating itself into the very fiber of his being. Taking a steadying breath, he reached out a hand and placed it on Y/nโs shoulder startling her her slightly before realizing it was just him. He watched as she hit the pause button, and the music that was flowing so clearly stopped. Bucky felt his heart rate pick up. There is no way that he's finally found her after all this time.
โHey Buck, What going on?โ Y/n asks softly, offering a smile
โCan I see your Phone?โ Bucky asks all in one breath.
Puzzled Y/n hands it to him. โUh, sure why?โ
โI just want to try somethingโ He mumbled as he put the earbuds in and walked away from her to the opposite end of the porch. He locked eyes with her and hit play.
He watched as Y/nโs eyes grew wide, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. She heard it too. Bucky swallowed as he took a shaky step toward her, the music getting louder with each step he took until he was standing face-to-face with her.
Ooh, ooh. I've fallen like a star for you
โI think youโre my soulmateโ He whispered, reaching out to cup her face with his flesh hand, the metal one still holding onto the phone.
Y/n blinked a few times in surprise before surging forward and tackling him in a hug planting a firm but warm kiss on his lips. Bucky blinked in surprise but responded immediately, wrapping his other arm around her and pulling her flush against his body.ย Eventually, they parted and Y/n smiled up at him.
ย โDoes that mean youโll stay here with me?โ She whispered.
Bucky pressed his forehead against hers before he replied, โForever and always, for as long as youโll have me.โ
A/N: OOO! I'm excited for this one yall! I've been working on it for a while! (Hence the word length hehe) But this is my first attempt at a soulmate AU and I hope I did it justice, but I'm really happy with it and I hope you guys love it as much as I do!

Christmas in the snow was something you adored about the festive season, and spending it with the ones you loved, both human and animal, would make it all the better. But Bucky had a surprise up his sleeve for you; the cards of his mischievous ways held close to his chest until the moment was right.

You had been given a very specific set of two rules to follow that day.ย
Number one: you were not to step foot outside of the cabin under any circumstances. โIf you need me,โ Bucky said, his eyes trained on you. โJust come to the front door and yell for meโIโll hear you and Iโll come, okay?โ
You agreed, although reluctantly.ย
Number two: in no way were you to attempt to uncover what he was up to โ whether that be by interrogation, snooping, or skullduggery.ย
Of course, you agreed; your fingers crossed behind your back.ย
The first attempt, naturally, was a failure.ย
You were standing at the front door. Bucky was obscured by the side of the cabin when you yelled out for him to come and get his coffee. โAnd if you want a snackโโ
โNah,โ Bucky called back, and he wandered over, and conveniently, when he stood before you on the doorstep, the bulk of his frame blocked your view into the yard. โIโm good, thanks, baby.โย
Your attempt at looking over his shoulders did not go unnoticed, and to your utter indignation, he started to chuckle. โAbsolutely fuckinโ not, Clover. Patience.โ
โUgh.โ
Your next attempt was when lunch time came around.ย
The dogs barked and yipped their happiness for getting their snow-covered paws on a snack when you walked past the window โ their tails brushed against the snow on the windowsill, and it made a puff of white to cover their rear ends. โOh, you idiots,โ you laughed as you neared the closed front door.
The hinges traitorously creaked as you pushed it open to lean out a little โ just a little, when Buckyโs voice boomed from the other side of the cabin, making you jump in fright. โHey! Get your cute butt back inside!โ
โUgh,โ you groaned. Almost had it.
The sound of Buckyโs boots crunching over the snow outside later that afternoon made you rejoice โ he must have finished, and you looked up from the book you were reading towards the window. Only, Bucky was walking towards it with his ladder under his arm, and the coat he wore bulging around his middle; a poor attempt at concealing something. โWhat theโฆโ
Sarge and Koda bounded around his feet while he walked, and you could just feel the frustration in Buckyโs posture, and the sound of his grumblings. โNoโ Get out of the damned way, girl. Sarge, heel!โ
The ladder landed on the snow-strewn ground with a metallic clang, and Buckyโs eyes met yours. He froze.ย
โHey,โ you said, blinking at him.ย
Bucky blinked back, and then he narrowed his eyes. โGo back to your bookโno peekinโ.โ
You sighed, rolled your eyes, and looked back down at your book. From the corner of your eye, if you only peeked, you could watch Buckyโs boots climb up the ladder, the outer sole of the thick, winter-built shoes covered in a layer of sticky snow.ย
Koda and Sargeโs faces peered in through the window, and when they saw you, their tongues lolled out of their mouths in unison; the cutest smiles you had ever seen. โHey, cuties,โ you mouthed, and you blew them a kiss each before you hastily looked down at your book before Bucky could see that your focus was elsewhere.ย
Time seemed to crawl by, minute by minute stretching further and further, almost impossibly so, when a sudden tap on the window made you jump in fright. โAh!โ
Bucky started to laugh, and he shook his head. โIโm done, you can come out now.โ
It was your turn to narrow your eyes this time. โAnd what makes you think I will? After sitting here, waiting foreverโโ
โJust get your butt out here,โ he said, gesturing you over. โCโmon, I wanna show you this.โ
You huffed and stood from your cosy blanket hub on the couch. โFine.โ The wooden floors creaked as you padded towards the front door. โโWanna show you thisโ he says, wellโโ
โI can hear you, yโknow.โ Bucky opened the front door, a brow raised in question. Instead of grilling you further, he reached out a gloved hand. โNow, cโmon, I know Iโve made you wait long enoughโI wouldnโt have done it if I didnโt have to. I wanted to surprise you.โ
Without hesitation you held Buckyโs offered hand, but you pouted at him. โIโve been on my own all day.โ
โDonโt go makinโ me feel worse, sweetheart,โ Bucky said. The soft brush of his lips on your cheek made you giggle, and he pulled away to walk you out the door. โBut Iโll make it up to you; promise I will.โ
You followed Bucky out of the front door and out into the snow โ where Sarge and Koda frolicked about happily, their tails wagging a mile an hour as they played. โThey werenโt no damn help,โ Bucky grumbled, rolling his eyes. The exasperated sigh that fell from his lips made a cloud of mist bloom against the darkening sky. โBut they did help me pick the colours for you.โ
โWhat do you meanโ?โ
Bucky grinned, his eyes scrunching at the edges with the brightness of his smile. โWell, bunny, I know how much you been lookinโ on that site, on your phoneโPinterest, I think it was.โย
โOh, boy,โ you said, and it dawned on you. Not even a week ago, you had excitedly run to Bucky while he was lounging in the living room, giddy with the rush of finding the cutest Christmas light set up for a cabin โ almost identical to the one you lived in with him. โOkayโฆ?โ
โAnd it got me thinkinโโโ
Without missing a beat, you interrupted him with, โThatโs dangerous.โ
โShut up.โ The two of you burst into laughter, leaning on one another for support. โOkay, okayโas I was sayinโ, it got me thinkinโโโ
Unable to help yourself, all while forcing the laughter back down into your chest, you raised your hand up to Buckyโs forehead. His brows furrowed in confusion when the back of your hand made contact with his skin, and you said, โOh, you poor thing!โ
โFor fucks sake,โ Bucky howled, and he bent over double wheezing with his laugh. The clouds of mist swirled while he coughed. โClover! Pleaseโโ
โIโm sorry, Iโm sorry,โ you rushed. The hiccupped laughter wracked your chest, and you took a second to breathe. โOkay. Okay, as you were saying?โ
It took a moment for Bucky to catch his own breath, but finally, he stood up straight, then cleared his throat. โFuckinโ hell, youโre too sassy for your own damned good.โ
โYou love it.โ
โYes,โ he quickly agreed. โBut I was lookinโ up those ideas you found; low and behold, it turned out I could pull at least one of โem off. Soโฆโ A remote, no bigger than your hand, was pulled from his coat pocket. It appeared innocuous, but you still tilted your head at it, confused and intrigued. โCโmere, and look at the cabin.โย
Bucky pulled you into his side, and you faced the cabin โ overwhelmed with apprehension. โWhatโ?โย
A click sounded, and the world came alight.ย
The cabin, while beautiful before, was otherworldly now โ lights of a bright, crystal white and a deep, velvety green shone and glowed along the window ledges. There were rainbows of colours in the trees: pinks, yellows, greens, and blues, bright against the white of the snow.ย
The breath in your chest hitched and stuttered, taking the ability to form words with it.ย
โOh,โ you finally managed, breathily and trembling. Buckyโs hand rubbed up and down your shoulder, the warmth of his touch bringing you back down to earth and to the haven before you. โOh, itโs beautiful.โ
โOnly the best for my girl,โ Bucky said quietly. โHappy Christmas, Clover.โ
Something was coming, and it was on its way to you โ there was no way to save yourself from the devil that set his sights on you, and you were hopeless against the whims of his charm or rugged ways.ย
And in an act of gratitude and pure innocence, you allowed the devil in, none the wiser for what was to come; no man was without his sins, but better the devil you donโt know.ย

Men, clad in leathers and vests with holsters on their hips lined the saloon stairs, while women in an assortment of skirts and blouses rushed with baskets and wares from the general store; their children playing in the mud, dirtying their worn clothes while mothers shrieked their grief over the once clean garments.ย
You couldnโt help the slight laugh that fell from your lips as you passed by a small boy who was splattered from head to toe in mud, his mother in a tizzy. โNow, Johnnyโโ
It was a pleasant day. A cool breeze blew through the side streets and over your sun-warmed skin. The basket on your arm was full of wares from your trip to the hunter down the lane, and the saddlebags on your old, trusted mare were lined with provisions from the general store.ย
Though no matter how pleasant it was, or how many children shrieked with laughter while they ran around your legs in joy, something screamed in the back of your mind that something was wrong โ an instinct long honed after working on a ranch since you were only a child.ย
โGood morninโ, miss.โย
You startled from your reverie at the sound of a deep, rasped voice to your right. โOhโ!โ The man smiled sympathetically, and you realised with a jolt that it was one of the old sharpshooters โ a man well past his prime, but one of the very few that had a shred of decency and sense within the town. โOh, good morning,โ you replied, smiling. โPleasant day.โย
He hummed in reply, and you continued on.ย
The shade of the awnings overhead disappeared as you walked out into the muddied street, and you blinked from the bright rays โ halos of rainbows danced in your vision while the sun warmed your face.ย
From a way, a few stragglers from the saloon stumbled into view, and you sighed as you caught sight of the haggard appearances and putrid smell. You kept your head down and eyes averted as you neared their stumbling figures and scrunched your nose in disgust.ย
No decent, respectable man stunk to the high heavens of liquor with a temper to match a lit fuse.ย
The centre of town came into view, and the further you walked towards one of your last destinations for the day, the stronger the sense of impending something lingered in the air โ it crackled with tension, akin to the static before a storm.ย
Every single man you passed was twitchy, their hands migrating to the holsters on their hips; every woman was hurrying by, faces taut with some unexplained worry.ย
Instinct โ a womanโs intuition โ insisted that something was coming.
You looked over your shoulder and cursed your past self for hitching your mare such a distance away. Her broad, muscled frame was no longer in sight through the scurrying crowds โ the golden glow of her coat coloured with patches of white impossible to see through the scurry of people.ย
โOh, girl,โ you mumbled, and you half considered turning tail to head back home.ย
But the doctorโs office was only a few paces away, you reasoned, and you hurried along, resolutely ignoring the collective, worried gazes from the townsfolk towards the horizon. The muddied skirts of your dress fluttered as you trotted towards the clean building that housed the resident doctor, and the basket over your arm swayed with your gait. Best be fast.
When the heels of your old boots hit the wooden slats of the wrap-around deck, the door to the doctorโs office just within reach, it happened.ย
Around you, the townsfolk fell deathly silent โ not a peep, not a sound. Every last man, woman, and child froze in place and stared, wide-eyed and stricken, down the street, downwind towards the horizon they were so fixated on.ย
Your stomach turned with nerves. The skin on the back of your neck prickled while your hair stood on end. It was an unnatural silence that pounded against your ears, and the blood that pumped through your veins turned to ice.ย
Gravely unsettled, you blinked against the instinct to run and hide, in favour or searching for the source.ย
The steady beat of heavy hooves thundered from down the street. Beside you, a woman and child gasped quietly โ you paid them no mind, for the sight of two horses enraptured you.ย
Muscle and sinew rippled with the gait of their long, lean legs. They walked side by side, the tack on their back, chests, and proud, handsome faces jingled and followed the contours of their broad flanks. Their coats shone under the light of the sun, but there was no mistaking the inked black beneath the splatter of mud from their journey.ย
It would be almost impossible to tell them apart if it werenโt for the one on the left appearing far calmer than their companion, who snorted proudly and tossed their head.ย
Your focus moved from the stunning creatures to their riders, and your breath hitched.ย
The man atop the fiery, fierce horse clothed similarly to his mount. A rippling, black coat barely concealed the hip holsters that held revolvers with ebony accented grips, or the elaborate bandolier wrapped from his shoulder to his waist โ the same black leather as his coat, but accented in silver, ornate imagery.
Rifles were strapped to the side of his saddle, long barrelled and scoped alike. From beneath his tilted hat, you could see the flow of jaw length, dark hair that fell in tresses to cover the profile of his face.ย
A man prepared for war, you thought distantly. He held himself like a soldier โ straight-backed and proud, guarded and eyes swivelling to take in the stilted townsfolk.ย
Though you could not discern what was being said, you watched the manโs mouth move, and his head turned towards his companion.ย
You followed his gaze and took in the other rider. He sported a blond beard and brown leather, his own coat shorter and far less impressive โ a simple rifle and a hunterโs bow was strapped to his saddle, and his gaze was far softer.
The horses walked closer and closer, and the nearer the two men came, the more nervous the people around you grew. A few men skittered off and bolted down side streets, or plainly ran away.ย
For the life of you, you could not understand why โ they looked no different from the men that went rogue against the laws of society to take up arms in the wilderness.ย
You were still rooted in place when they came so close you could scent the rich, cured leather of their boots and saddles, and you couldnโt help staring at the extravagant wealth that lined their person and padded their mounts. It was plain as day they were no strangers to wealth, but to be an outlaw with wealth? That was unheard of.ย
It was only when they were right next to you did your ability to breathe truly vanish.ย
โI donโt like this,โ the blond grumbled, his eyes darting from person to person. โItโs too openโfar too open, weโre exposed. You know whatโll happen if weโre corneredโโ
โEnough.โ Sharp, grey eyes met yours, and within the second of that glance, you felt your stomach flip upside down. The heart that hammered in your chest rocketed upwards into your throat.ย
The stranger seemed to have an inkling for your reaction, or he experienced something similar โ his eyes narrowed as he considered you, a piercing look that took hold of your wriggling stomach and forced it to still. โWeโll get what we need and move on. Calm down.โ
You blinked, and he was no longer looking at you. Instead, his blond companion gazed at you curiously, tilting his head.ย
โMove on,โ the dark-haired man spat, and he nudged his horse into a trot. The slap from the leather reins against his horseโs neck was loud.ย
Rather than spur onwards, the blond stared at you for a moment longer. โRogers, get a move on.โ
โYeah,โ he said softly, still staring at you. Blue eyes moved over your face before he turned his head forwards, then he followed behind his partner.ย
When the both of them were out of earshot, you heard multitudes of townsfolk collectively exhale with what you guessed was relief. โWe donโt need another shoot out thanks to those bastards,โ one of them grumbled. โNot after the last one.โ
โShootout?โ you questioned, feeling your heart slowly sink back down into your chest. โWhatโ What happened?โ
They regarded you carefully. โYou donโt come down this way often, do you, miss?โย
You shook your head. โNo, I live overโโ
โCount yourself lucky,โ they interrupted, raising their brows. โThose two are monsters. Donโt have the bounty on their heads for nothinโ, and you donโt get any bounty hunters in these parts that go after โem โcause all the ones that do, end up fed to the wolves.โ The bag over their shoulder was shrugged further up, their grip tight. โJust stay well away from โem, missโnot the kinda folk you want to get involved with if you want tโa live in peace.โ
โButโโย
They turned away. Their hunched back swayed under the weight of the sack on their shoulder.ย
You frowned at the retreating stranger.ย
Sure, they looked the part of a deadly duo, not unlike the ones in your novellas or dreams, but they passed through the town peacefully, if ominously โ that was the fault of the townsfolk acting as though death himself strolled down the muddied street.ย
โI donโt understandโฆโ A loud snort of one of their horses drew your attention, and you watched as the strangers dismounted and hitched their mounts right out the front of the general store.ย
Everyone gave them a wide berth; heads down and feet fast over the mud to get out of their way.ย
What a lonely existence, you thought.ย
For the entirety of your life, you were regarded as a bright, intelligent woman that worked hard. The passing of your family had hit you hard, but you were determined to live up to their memory, to maintain the ranch they left behind and restore it to its full glory โ only that took up far more time than you anticipated, and while it was still a raw wound, you trudged on.ย
Being all alone up on your small slice of good olโ Western soil was something you took pride in, but you had to admit, albeit grudgingly, that it wasnโt all it was cut out to be.ย
The thought alone made you sympathise with the two outlaws โ a life on the road, running from societal norms and expectations while maintaining the lifestyle they no doubt had become accustomed to, made even you feel a sense of weary exhaustion deep in your bones.
Isolation was not a weak manโs game.ย
โGet it together,โ you hastily whispered, shaking your head under the guise of shooing a fly. Your bright, generous personality would not help them, nor would it help you, you reasoned โ not this time.ย
With a heavy sigh, you pushed open the door to the doctorโs office to purchase some medicine and supplies for the coming weeks.ย
The entirety of the town was still strung up with tension when you excited the doctorโs office half an hour later, according to your pocket watch โ a family heirloom. People still rushed to and fro with their gazes locked onto the two black horses settled by the hitching post at the general store.ย
It was a foolish decision, but you stopped to admire their fine confirmations and broad builds.ย
There were no doubts on how war-ready the two were, though their docile nature threw you โ never before had you seen horses stand so blessedly still and patient, even back on your own ranch.ย
You couldnโt help but take a step closer, the urge to feel the silken soft coats that were muddied from their journey overwhelming your rational sense. There was no mistaking the fact that they were both stallions now you were beside them; finely bred and hardened for battle from their owners' tendencies for violence.ย
A dark, mahogany eye met yours, and if it were possible, their face softened while their ears perked forwards.ย
On the other side of the stallion you greeted, was the one with a white star. His eyes were far kinder and softer than the firstโs.
The first stallion knickered lowly while you stepped even closer, the compulsion to be near overtaking you, and you held your hand out for the creature to sniff. The brush of his lips over your offered hand made you giggle. โArenโt you two beautiful?โ
They snorted in tandem.ย
Suddenly, the hair on your arms stood on end, and the feeling of being watched spooked you into stepping back hastily. You glanced around to search for the cause, afraid for what you would find, but there was no one paying attention to you; far too consumed in their own needs to finish their runs for supplies or complete their jobs.ย
โI have to go, beauties,โ you said quietly to the two horses, who only blinked in reply.ย
Your feet carried you swiftly away, but you glanced over your shoulder to the two stallions one last time, in awe of their strength and beauty.ย
You werenโt to see the set of steel grey eyes watching you from the gunsmithโs window on the opposite side of the street, not while you hastened your pace to get back to your own mount and go home โ where it was safe.ย
People bustled and shoved against you as they made their own way, and you kept your breath steady and even the best you could.ย
Shouts and calls of workmen and ranch hands followed you as you half walked, half jogged onwards, and halfway to your patient mare, you were pulled up short by the rotten stench of waste and liquor โ a potent mix that would make anyoneโs stomach turn.ย
It was sickeningly close, and the source was a stumbling, drunken fool in front of you.ย
โOh, no,โ you mumbled. The volume of your voice was next to impossible to make out among the background noise, and you were grateful โ there was no telling what this drunkard would do if he heard you.ย
His back was turned towards you, and you carefully hastened to walk around him, to avoid his line of sight, but his head turned just as you took a step to the side.ย
The sudden appearance of a woman within his filthy grasp caught his attention, and the words that fell from his drooling mouth werenโt even intelligible. โAinโ Pretty girlโโ A hiccup and loud belch cut his torrent short.ย
โIโm justโ Oh,โ you gasped as the man pulled a knife and an old, rusted revolver from the inside of his jacket. A cascade of fear shut your mind down and locked your joints, the immobility frightened you beyond what you could bear. โNo, no, pleaseโโย
They were only small weapons, but they would do no less damage if he shot you point blank or forced the blade through skin and bone. โSir, pleaseโโย
โGimโ money!โ
โI donโt haveโ Please, leave me be,โ you pleaded, holding up a placating hand. The fear turned your tongue into a lead weight in your mouth and you couldnโt speak more than a few words to plead for your life, which only infuriated the man further.ย
He advanced, his steps stumbling and uncoordinated, and the gun he brandished glinted in the sun โ a menacing shine of metal that you knew was your last. The stench of his breath made your stomach roil with sickness. โGood for nothinโ whorโโ
Footsteps rustled and waded through the mud behind you, and the world around you froze.ย
The drunkardโs mouth hung slack, wide with the shock from the sudden, cold bite of metal from the end of an ornate muzzle pressing hard into his temple. A gloved finger was poised over the trigger.ย
Your attention snapped to the brave soul that came to your rescue, and your own mouth fell open in shocked awe โ the same outlaw that sent the town into a terrified silence held his ebony revolver to the drunkardโs temple with little regard for the force behind it.
He looked inhuman with fury laced through the pale blue of his eyes. Malice and disgust radiated from him in waves.ย
โNow do you really want to finish insultinโ this poor woman?โ a husked voice asked behind you. You whirled around, the skirts of your dress fluttering, and found the blond outlaw standing behind you, terrible in his rage. โRobbinโ an innocent girl to get your fuckinโ dick wet at the whore house?โ
There was a pregnant pause, only broken by the piteous whimpering from the drunkard. โIโ Iโโ A dark stain grew over the crotch of his worn, stained overalls.ย
His head jerked hard to the side as one of your saviours pushed the muzzle of the gun harder against the thin bones of his temple with a snarl. โHe asked you a question.โ
โWhat the fuck do you think you were doinโ, you bastard?โ The blond spat. โAnswer me before you get a third eye.โ
Before the drunkard could answer, you cut in fearfully, โIโ I just want to go home.โ The darker-haired outlawโs eyes flashed angrily as he looked at you, and you stepped back on instinct, only to come back to chest with his partner. โPlease, justโ I am so sorryโโ
โYou arenโt the one tossinโ around a damned fuckinโ gun like itโs your cock, sweetheart,โ the blond soothed.
A low growl of anger came from the dark-haired outlawโs throat. โAnd pathetic men who disrespect a woman in front of me tend to lose theirsโby a fuckinโ bullet or a knife, your choice.โย
The drunkard stumbled to the side with the shove from the gun.ย
โBuck,โ the blond said, and you guessed that was the dark-haired outlawโs name. โI donโt think this fella is goinโ to answer me.โ A hand rested on your shoulder, and you jumped. โWhoaโ Easy, sweetheart, weโre not the ones that are goinโ to hurt you.โย
The warmth from his palm abated the worst of the fear, and you followed where he guided you to stand โ in his shadow that casted itself over the ground. โAs for him, wellโฆโ
โApologise,โ Buck spat, nearing the drunkardโs pale, sweaty face. โI donโt care if I have to lose a bullet to get you to do it, either.โ
โSโ Sorry, miss,โ the drunkard whispered, his voice high with terror. โSorry, Iโโ He was cut off by the shove to the shoulder, and you watched as he clumsily ran away.ย
Only, Buck raised his revolver and cocked the hammer back before a shot ran out with a cloud of smoke. The sound echoed like cannon fire off of the surrounding trees and sparse buildings โ you could even hear faint shouts and screams of fear within the township.ย
โGood riddance,โ the blond said with a nod.ย
โI wasnโt goinโ to let the bastard go,โ Buck said lowly, voice still laced with a poisonous vitriol. He looked at you then and lowered his head respectfully. โMiss.โ
โIโโ You tried, but some force was making you tremble from head to toe โ waves of flight or fight warring within your mind as you stood between the two deadliest men you had ever encountered. โPlease donโt hurt meโโ
โOh, sweetheart, no,โ the blond said quickly, holding his hands up and away from his holsters. โNameโs Steve, this here is Buckโor Bucky.โ
You looked between them, eyes wide with your fear and still rooted to the spot with your pulsing terror. While you looked at Steve beseechingly, you saw from the corner or your eyes as Bucky shrugged off his thick, leather coat to reveal a white, long-sleeved shirt, and a black vest that had embroidery and filigree within the expensive material.
He was silent while he stood there, coat in his gloved hands.ย
โWhereโs your horse?โ Steve asked, looking around.ย
โOverโ Sheโs over there,โ you whispered, pointing towards where you hitched your mare. The bustle of noise had caught her attention, and you could see her kind face looking in your direction with her ears perked. โI didnโt think toโโ
โDonโt worry, miss,โ Steve assured, and he looked at Bucky with a brow raised. โYou good?โ
Bucky nodded, then offered his coat to you. โTo keep you warm,โ he rasped. โYouโre shakinโ like a leaf.โ
You blinked and almost dropped your basket, but Bucky rushed forward and caught it. โHere,โ he offered quietly, passing the basket to Steve and holding up his coat โ the inner leather was warm and rich with his scent, and you couldnโt help but burrow into the comfort it provided.ย
The basket with all of your wares hung from Steveโs arm. โWeโll take you home, then be on our wayโthat alright, miss?โย
Bucky was still working the large coat over your shoulders until he was satisfied it would sit comfortably. โIโ I donโt knowโโ The journey home was a long one, and you wouldnโt say no to the safety their company would provide, but the problem of your trembling limbs made you doubt whether you would be able to stay in the saddle for long at all.ย
The two of them seemed to catch on to your concern.ย
Steve frowned and glanced at Bucky, who was wordlessly staring at your hands. โYou can hop on behind Buckโyour mare can follow behind, Iโve got her.โ
Without another word, Steve started to walk towards their two mounts that were waiting a few feet away โ you hadnโt even noticed them.ย
Bucky glanced up at your face while you stared into his, and he smiled slightly. The ice that had settled in your stomach inexplicably melted away with the softness of his gaze. You followed behind him as he led you to their stallions.ย
The shadow from a building beside them made their coats even darker, and the bigger of the two started to walk forwards at the sight of you approaching with one of their number. It was the same horse that affectionately brushed his lips over your hand out the front of the general store.
โOh, hello,โ you whispered, unable to help the smile that pulled at your lips. โYou are beautiful, arenโt you?โ
โDonโt give โim a bigger ego than his owner,โ Steve chortled. The withering glare Bucky sent Steve almost made you laugh.ย
โThis is Rebel,โ Bucky said, patting the stallionโs lithe neck and making the skin ripple.ย
โHello, Rebel,โ you cooed, scratching his nose affectionately. Then, you realised you hadnโt given any of them your name, and when you glanced at Bucky after offering it, his head was tilted minutely to the side.ย
He did not give you a chance to question why before he mounted Rebel and sat in the saddle proudly. โYou can ride?โ
โYeah.โ Buckyโs grip on your hand was tight and firm, and he yanked you up from the ground with apparent ease. โI, uhโ My home is a ranch.โ
There was a pleased hum from Steve, and Bucky looked over his shoulder at you while Rebelโs hooves shuffled to accommodate the sudden new addition on his back.ย
โHold tight,โ Bucky said gruffly. You rested your hands on either side of his waist, holding steady while Rebelโs movements were smooth beneath you โ the reins were loose, and Buckyโs thighs clamped around the barrel of his mountโs flanks.ย
โHe is so beautiful,โ you murmured again, just as Rebel made to turn around and walk towards your mare. On impulse, you moved one hand from Buckyโs waist to the dark coat behind your thighs.ย
The inky pelt felt not unlike a luxurious silk.ย
โThank you,โ Bucky said, then he clicked his tongue. Rebel took the cue and picked up the pace. โHeโs been through hell anโ back with me. There ainโt many horses as strong as he is. Iโm a lucky bastard.โ
You moved your hands from Rebelโs coat back to Buckyโs waist to hold on. Even over the vest you felt the heat radiating from his body, and you couldnโt help but shift closer.
All the while a part of your mind screamed for you to drop and run โ a long, dormant instinct that arose with such strength youโd never felt before.
The two men were no doubt two of the fiercest you could have ever encountered, that was not for debate or contest โ you could feel the strength of Buckyโs control on his horse in the way the mount moved with such trained ease. Not to mention the muscles that rippled under the long-sleeved shirt of his made you realise there was far more than met the eye.ย
What held your tongue from screaming or crying for help was the way the two of them did not even bat an eye before shooting a vagrant drunk that accosted you, even though they had no idea who you were โ just a woman going about her day.ย
Not to them, you thought.ย
You noticed the townsfolk that stopped and stared at the three of you while you passed them by, both shock and fear painting their pale, grime-streaked faces, and you couldnโt help but wonder what they were thinking. A poor, foolish girl riding with the most dangerous men.
โThere she is,โ Steve said suddenly, pulling you from your reverie. You blinked from the light of the sun, and found Steve pointing towards your mare, a beautiful, golden palomino whoโs coat gleamed in the morning rays. โThatโs her, isnโt it?โ
โYeah,โ you replied, smiling softly at the softened gaze of your mare once she spotted you. โThatโs my girl.โ
โSheโs a fine horse,โ Bucky said as he pulled Rebel to a stop. โStevie, youโve got โer?โ
Steve nodded and dismounted to unhitch her from her post. โYou take the lead; Iโll follow behind with this pretty lady.โ You watched as your mare was tied to the horn of Steveโs saddle, and she came into stride next to him with as little as a heavy sigh to acknowledge her predicament. โA dramatic oneโโ
โYou havenโt seen the worst of it,โ you laughed as you scratched at her ears. โNot in the slightest.โ
During the journey back to your ranch, you couldnโt help but notice how silent Bucky was โ all conversation and pleasantries were held between Steve and yourself, with minimal input from the brooding rider in front of you. During one of the longer stretches of silence, albeit a strangely comfortable one, you took a moment to consider with a keen eye how Bucky held himself.ย
The man was truly a marvel, that you assumed correctly. His broad, wide shoulders were straight, only slumping when he seemed to grow weary โ most notably through Steveโs many tirades.ย
The black vest he wore hugged his chest and waist, accentuating the lines of his muscled torso in all of the right places, and it made you think countlessly of the heroes in your stories that lined the old, wooden bookshelf in your bedroom.ย
His shirt wrinkled and smoothed with each movement of his arms, the tight muscle beneath making your mouth water.ย
โHow far do you live from town?โ Bucky asked suddenly, and to your horror, he glanced over his shoulder before you could school your expression, or at least look away from the expanse of his back. Something flashed in his grey eyes, and you were embarrassed to see a small smirk forming on his full lips.ย
The coat over your shoulders was a welcome reprieve and you found yourself burrowing yourself deeper into the warmth it offered your still trembling limbs, and you hastened to answer before Steve could interject โ the blond looked about ready to cause more trouble. โNot far, just a little while longer. Youโll come upon my fields soon.โ
He nodded and urged Rebel a little faster, the movement of the horseโs hindquarters jostled you into being pressed right up against Buckyโs back. In the slight moment of shock, you clamped your arms around his waist tighter. The fabric wrinkled under your sudden, iron-clad grip, and under your hands, you could feel the low rumble of his chest while he laughed.ย
You rested your forehead against the smooth fabric of his vest to hide your shame.ย
Wooden fence posts suddenly appeared in your peripheral vision, and you glanced up to find the outer fence line of your ranch perimeter in all its glory.ย
The farmhouse at the end of the dusty, dirt lane was a modest building from the exterior, but you were relieved to see it nonetheless โ wooden slats were bleached from the harsh light of the sun, and the characteristic weathervane of a loping horse still sat perched on the roof from when you were a child.ย
โWeโre here,โ you said happily, unable to stop the smile of relief. โThatโs my home.โ
Bucky said nothing while Steve moved his mount closer. โItโs beautiful. You live out here by yourself?โ
โI do,โ you replied wearily, side-eyeing Steve. โWhy?โ
Steve looked at you quickly. โI didnโt mean nothinโ by it, I swear.โ
โShut your trap, you fuckinโ bastard,โ Bucky snapped, glaring at Steve. You blinked and stared between them. โLeave โer alone. If she is happy on โer own, sheโs happy. Sheโs already proven to be a strong woman who doesnโt need the likes aโyou to judge โer.โ
โSettle, settle,โ Steve laughed, โI meant nothinโ, I swear, Buck.โ
Bucky shifted in the saddle, and you felt him press back against you. The simple act to get closer made an indescribable heat climb up the skin of your neck. โGood, now shut it.โย
You caught Steveโs gaze, and he winked while Buckyโs gaze was elsewhere.ย
The swirling confusion in your mind overtook any sense to question what just happened between them โ they truly were an odd duo, but you didnโt linger on that thought too long before Bucky pulled Rebel to a halt on the earthen path that led to your front door.ย
The gate creaked and groaned in the slight breeze, and a few of the horses looked up from their lazy grazing to investigate the newcomers.ย
โWell, here yโare,โ Steve said, handing you the reins for your mare. The two men were looking around your property with interest as you took hold of the rope, and a thought crossed your mind โ it was reckless, dangerous, and possibly the most foolish idea, but something nagged within your heart to voice it.ย
โWhy donโtโ Uh, wellโโ The rope was tight around your knuckles while you fidgeted with it, and your mare nuzzled your elbow. โWhy donโt you come on in? I can fix you up a hot meal and you both can, wellโyou can rest. I can at least thank you for your efforts.โ
There was a beat of silence, then Steve said, โYou sure, darlinโ? We can head on off; weโre only passinโ through.โ
Buckyโs expression remained impassive, but there was something in his gaze that told you that you were doing the right thing โ however much your good sense screamed that it was a mistake. โIโm sureโcome on in and Iโll get the pot going.โย
You didnโt wait for them to answer before you set off to walk towards your home, all the while praying that you hadnโt just bitten the bullet.ย
โWell, thatโs real kind,โ Steve called, then you heard soft hoofbeats thudding over the earth behind you.
The horses scattered throughout the fields watched you walk by with the strangers in tow, ears perked forward and eyes bright with interest. From the corner of your eyes, you could see Rebel start to gain on you, and then you felt his muzzle brush your shoulder. โHi there, pretty boy,โ you cooed, kissing the side of his nose.ย
A deep chuckle sounded from his back, and you looked up towards Bucky, who was looking down at you with a soft smile โ one that you found youโd do anything to see again.ย
โYou can hitch the boys just here,โ you said as you pointed to a wooden rail set just next to the porch railing. The worn oak was sturdy, and you knew it would hold the two stallions should they grow restless.ย
Steve dismounted with a loud groan, and he stretched to the sky when his boots landed on the dirt.ย
Bucky, however, moved his left leg up and over Rebelโs neck, and he slid from the saddle with as little effort โ a difficult dismount performed with ease, and the bastard knew it, too. An arrogant smirk pulled at the corner of his lips for a moment before Steve rounded the back of his horse, when it vanished.ย
The sudden change in his demeanour made your brows furrow with confusion, but Bucky shot you a look that forced your expression to be neutral โ whatever made him conscious of his outward expression of happiness was his business, you reminded yourself.ย
But you couldnโt deny the pull to see him smile again, not after your interest in the brooding man had grown tenfold over the journey home.
Legends and tales of those that roughed the open plains were whispered on the breeze through the wilderness; off walls that bound the churches and saloons. They reached you, though you paid them no mind โ good men were countlessly slandered by the mouths of others, and until you could judge for yourself, you left well enough alone.
That is, until one of the deadliest rogues ventured to your town and staked his claim on your unsuspecting heart.

๊ค Many of those who followed me in the very beginning will remember my old fic and the very first story I ever, ever wrote โ The Outlaw's Heart. And while that fic is still being rewritten, doing so is taking a long time considering it's verging on 100k words โ I wanted something with an Outlaw!Bucky now. It will be gritty, it will be gruesome, and it will be awesome.
๊ค This collection is entirely based off of KALEO's two songs (and my most two favourite songs ever): Way down We Go, and Broken Bones.
