Disabled historical figures: Frida Kahlo
Frida developed polio at the age of six, leaving her with damage to her right leg. Because of this damage, her father encouraged her to participate in sports to build up strength. She continued on with school and studied medicine, but got in a bus accident at eighteen. The accident gave her spine and pelvis damage that affected her for the rest of her life. While bedridden and in recovery after the accident, Kahlo began to paint. She frequently painted self portraits, many of which depicted her disability. These paintings depict a lot of suffering, which she has turned into art to help her cope and show us the reality of her life. Frida and her work show us both the pain and beauty of disabled identity and how it affects our views and interactions with the world.

thank you @thedesiroyal on instagram for working with me on this!
Academia for Med Students
hand drawing anatomy notes with excruciating detail, having specific study rituals, dragging yourself out of bed for early lectures, constantly switching between specialties, getting very excited about your field once you do settle on one, learning more about pain and human nature than you thought you would, being at peace with death, feeling like youâve found yourself when you put on scrubs and a stethoscope, knowing the harm of all your vices and trying to make them better, and knowing all the work and long hours will be worth it in the end.
thank you @_ha.nnah on instagram for working with me on this!
Academia for Political Science Students
getting into heated debates. practicing speeches with nothing but the rain outside your window for an audience. reading ancient political philosophy and hoping that you will go down in history for your own writings. being completely oblivious to the passing of time as you write about injustice and how to solve it. getting involved in your school community. going to endless meetings and making connections where you can. spending hours at the library, studying and writing because itâs so important for you to absorb knowledge to back up what you know. dreaming of internships in important cities and learning how your government works. being overwhelmed with knowledge and passion for what you study because you really do want to make a difference, and one day you will.
thank you to @caprio.mike (a king) on instagram for working with me on this!
Academia for Law Students
reading endless books, gaining a new perspective from each one. studying the cases that shaped history, wondering if one day youâll be part of one. staying up til the ungodly hours of the night trying to memorize everything that happened, a cup of coffee the only thing keeping you up. scrambling to get your papers together after realizing youâre late because you fell asleep on them the night before. showing up to class with bags under your eyes, barely awake, but knowing it will be worth it. hanging on to every word your professor says in lecture because you know that for you, itâs the most important thing in the world. you have passion and so much power from this knowledge, and you will not let it go to waste.
