Mateo Reyes Jr Nicknames: Copy Cat, El Eco, Blackjack
M | 1974 (25) | 5’6" | Mexican-American | Featherweight | Hybrid
Personality
{Pro} Creative, loyal, adaptive
{Con} Shy, Aggressive, risk taker
Outside the ring he’s kinda shy but inside the ring he switches to an aggressive and relentless risk taker. LETS GO GAMBLINGG. He searches for a style in both art and boxing he can truly call his own. He's grumpy all the time and he still struggles with his self identity.
He's not ‘👉👈’ shy, he's ‘🧍♂️’ shy.
Physical Description
Athletic build. Well groomed. Tan skin, mole on knee and neck. Thick messy slicked back hair. (Hair gel is a big investment) Thick eyebrows. Black sneakers. Usually wears urban streetwear. Small gold chain accessory. Likes smokey cologne scents. Usually has dried paint on his fingers. (He would totally get a tattoo but I just haven’t decided on what and where and when).
Background
Mateo was born and raised with Mia in California. His uncle, Tilo, was the only male figure in his life after his father passed away when he was a child. During his early childhood, Mateo was a quiet boy who hid behind his sister and went along with her schemes. He was always viewed as a quiet kid that went along with others more outspoken than him, which often got him in trouble.
Because of this, Tilo decided to step in more in his nephew's life. He nurtured Mateo’s artistic soul, letting him watch and eventually copy intricate pinstriping in the car shop after he got out of school. He’d even let him mess around with his art tools to help Mateo develop a healthy creative outlet as a growing kid. Tilo, who once enjoyed boxing with Mateo's father, explained that one of the reasons he retired was to protect his precious drawing hand after he injured it: a lesson that he drilled into Mateo to become ambidextrous.
Tilo would say Mateo was more than just a copycat. He noted that Mateo would take his uncle's pieces and put his own creative spin on them, yet he still struggled with true originality. It was Tilo who subtly reintroduced boxing back into their lives by telling stories about how he and their father sparred.
After Tilo's death, Mateo began acting stupid again: graffiti tagging property, getting in trouble with the law. His mom, fearing for her son’s future in a city where she had to beg on his behalf, arguing that he was still a child in the eyes of a law but that wasn’t going to fly when he turns 18. Mom took her children to Mexico to move in with their dad’s side of the family. She also brought them to the boxing gym that their father used to attend. THE ONE WHERE ALFREDO Mother Fuckin GONZALEZ TRAINS.
She practically threw him in that gym, telling Alf’s coach (their dad’s old friend) that he owes her one and to teach her kid a lesson. Alfredo, being the man he is, is always going to humble any trouble making punk. After humbling the hell out of Mateo, he finally bowed his head humbly for the first time since his uncle’s death. Alfredo was no-nonsense toward this chicano kid’s attitude. In Alfredo Gonzalez, Mateo now sees a new muse and the embodiment of the strength and authentic identity he desperately seeks to copy, both in his art and his boxing.
Relationships
Mia: Mia can I borrow $20 yknow I'm good for it.
Jose Nargo: A genuine friend and rival. They like to bond over who took more punches from their respective senpais and who came out better. Jose puts up with Mateo’s prickly attitude and lets him vent and gives decent advice to his pal. Nargo's defeat was a personal insult, fueling Mateo's initial desire for vengeance against Sendo.
Alfredo Gonzalez: His idol and muse. The ultimate fucking goal. All for the name of the game. Unlike Ricardo, Alfredo doesn’t wear a mask. He wears CHAINS. Mextli, became Mateo's inspiration and muse. Even though he'd sacrifice himself to Alf’s blows, Mateo grew stronger and stronger because of it. Rising in the ranks in matches of his own. The only one Alf can go sicko mode on with permission to not hold back. (The blood spatters are truly a work of art.)
Alfredo chooses him to pass his torch to.
Ricardo Martinez: A distant, untouchable god of boxing. Initially a goal to emulate but Ricardo's perfection now serves as a benchmark that Mateo wants to reach with his own unique style when he develops it.
Takeshi Sendo: Former rival turned inspiration. Mateo is JEALOUSSS of this bastard for so many reasons but mostly jealous of his authentic fighting spirit the most..
They vowed to take their revenge against him for Nargo’s disrespectful loss and for Alfredo’s defeat. He later understands Sendo gave Alf the fight Alf wanted but Mateo still holds a bitter taste. Now the Reyes siblings begrudgingly support Sendo in secret. They wanted to see him take down Ricardo and put an end to the untouchable legend that downed their senpai.
Mateo also has a new perspective on what it means to be strong. That it isn’t just about techniques or even raw power but about having that unbreakable fighting spirit.
Mia Reyes
F | 1972 (28) | 5’1” | Mexican-American | Boxing Manager
Personality
Fiery, self assured, meticulous with a short temper. Her competitive nature helps her chase her goals relentlessly. Big freakin’ tsundere. All her actions are driven by a protective love for her brother and wish to see him live up to his potential.
Physical Description
Short stature. Brown eyes. Tan skin, mole on knee and collar bone. Wavy long black hair, constantly straightens hair and ties up into a high ponytail with a scrunchie. White sneakers. Usually wears gym attire. Wears typically oversized sweatshirts and rolls up sleeves. Signature blue and white windbreaker with a popped collar. Occasionally accessorises with stud or hoop earrings and light colored fingernail polish. Prefers vanilla lotion scents. I like to draw her hair as spikey or pointy when she's huffy which is usually like all the time.
Background
Mia is the driving force behind her brother’s boxing career. She keeps everything running (aka keeping him in check) and always plans a few steps ahead. Her uncle Tilo first noticed her sharp mind when she was a kid in California. He loved watching her outsmart him when they played card games. Mia didn’t hesitate even when her brother cried like a baby when he’d lose their bets. Her uncle always told her she was meant for more, just like her dad hoped. Those moments made her believe she could do anything.
When Tilo died, that belief faded. She lost her confidence and carried a quiet guilt because she’d let her own potential slip away and failed to look out for Mateo as he acted out from the same loss. After reassessing the situation she didn’t want her uncle’s faith in her to die with him, she just reshaped it herself. She threw herself into building Mateo’s potential, trying to step into the role Tilo once played for both of them. Her goal was simple. Keep his ass out of trouble. She was inspired by her mother and her uncle’s stories about their father who liked to box before coming to California. She figured with boxing she could keep Mateo’s fists in the ring and not outside it. She started studying the sport seriously, spending hours watching old boxing tapes and taking detailed notes. Over time, she grew to really love it. Made scrapbooks filled with photos, stats, and strategies on every fighter and potential opponents. Her girlish obsession combined with Mateo’s skills to execute her ideas made the two of them a powerful sibling duo
Things started to shift when Mia became friends with Lisa and Jose. They respected her focus and didn’t take her temper personally. For the first time in years, she’s starting to wonder what kind of future she wants for herself, outside of her brother’s career.
Relationships:
Mateo: No dumbass you literally still owe me $50 from the last time.
Lisa: *spams heart emojis* The bestie. Keeps her grounded and helps her fight her own personal battles by being the only one Mia feels like she can let her guard down with.
Jose Nargo: A good friend and rival. He thinks she’s lowkey scary but not a bad person. He doesn’t mind all her questions about Ricardo. His defeat by Sendo made the conflict personal for her, solidifying her initial grudge against the Japanese brawler who shall not be named.
Alfredo Gonzalez: The ultimate lifeform!! Respected superior and her primary project outside of Mateo. She aids in his training and strategy, viewing his goal of defeating Ricardo as the ultimate intellectual challenge. Alf stan for life. FOR LIFE. She has cried during each of the matches he’s lost.
Ricardo Martinez: The personification of perfection. She studies him as an unsolvable equation, whose defeat would be the ultimate validation for her. She’s tired of seeing his pretty dumb perfect handsome face. She hopes one day to celebrate his defeat by burning the scrapbook of information she gathered on him. (Which is 90% pictures of him from magazines).
Takeshi Sendo: Her greatest frustration and secret fascination. She is infuriated by his defenseless, wack, illogical, and instinct-driven boxing that totally defies her analysis. A mix of "I hate your guts" and begrudging admiration "damn it he's so cool".
