Christmas Day 2017

It’s been a year filled with high points and some of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face. I’m thankful for the Lord that has blessed us in so many ways, who has a plan for us, one that will give us hope and a future. Hope you all have a safe and love-filled Christmas!

I watched the sun setting over Lake Mulwala today and it was stunning. 

The most beautiful melding of all my favourite colours across the water and the sky. A slightly deep blue, bleeding into clear, crystal blue as you looked up at the sky, then a touch of light green, then pale orangey/pink with purple/grey clouds. The water mirrored the sky, with the silhouettes of the trees - little fuzzy black lines in the water, and even the shadows of the purple clouds were reflected in the light lines of the moving body. The sun was off to the left, with its rays outstretched towards me, reaching. However, it was that view - between the paddle steamer and that crooked bridge, of just the open water, of those crisp blues, pinks and purples... that really captured my heart the most.

The most incredible city I’ve ever visited. I don’t care if it’s a man-made skyline, there is something about so incredibly beautiful about this time-worn place; as if the events of its past touched it and left their mark, but did not leave it in ruins. People come to Paris to see what is still standing; what is still thriving. They come to visit the Louvre, Notre Dame, le Tour Eiffel, les Champs Élysées… to enjoy the cafes, the shopping, the baguettes or brioche baked fresh each morning, or an exquisite macaron from Pierre Hermé or Ladurée… not simply to see what remains of past glory. Of course there is so much more to this city than these typical touristy pursuits, but for a sixteen year old girl who’d always dreamt of going to Paris, every moment here was something magical. In the few whirlwind days I had here, before returning to my host family’s home in Angers, we rushed everywhere - from our hotel to the metro, from monuments to galleries, from the Latin quarter to le Galeries Lafayette and Chez Longchamps. I do remember pausing properly for a few moments though, to stare at the purple, pink and orange hues of the sky playing against the shadowy peaks of l’Opera Garnier and thinking, knowing, that one day I would return here once more. It may not be the most liveable city in the world, but for me, this is still the stuff of dreams.

Second year post-graduation.

It’s hard to believe how fast it’s all gone, that I finished school in 2010, university in 2015 and it’s already 2017. Dentistry is still what I love and I am so thankful for that. 

Hope 2017 is kind to all of you.

Thinking of ballet

It’s been quite a few years since I put on my ballet shoes...

I was just thinking of the concerts today, and that incredible feeling of being on that vast stage, with it’s dark curtains and cool (almost draughty) air.. there was always an incredible sense of anticipation, mixed with the smell of hair spray and gel, as we struggled to get our hair into perfect buns, put on our makeup and get our costumes just right. I remember being a tiny girl and seeing the ballet school principal on stage, clapping, turning, shouting and then it was our turn - it was a beautiful feeling, and something i got to experience every year for about 15 years. Maybe I’ll go back one day, it won’t be the same, but maybe there’s somewhere out there. Somewhere that will help me find that precious feeling of dancing on stage once more.

Sometimes treatment decisions aren’t easy

You finish dental school and although you had dilemmas then, there are so many more now. When you’re learning, seeing, thinking more and more each day... it doesn’t get simpler, not just yet anyway.

we had an orthodontics exam this morning, and one of my friends couldn’t remember a third reason for why a patient could have a gummy smile…. so he put “edentulous." 

100% not wrong. 100% hilarious.

Hope you’ve all been well!

I’ve been good. Being a dentist is so fun, everything I could have hoped for and so happy to have achieved this dream of mine. If i could give advice to my younger self it would be “the best laid plans are often derailed, just have faith that things will work themselves out; enjoy every moment of each day and the time you have with the people you love”. Happy Tuesday everyone!

So I think I finished dental school today

It’s been the craziest, fastest, most amazing five years of my life and there’s no better experience that I could have wished for. This time next week I could potentially be officially called “Dr.” - that’s an amazing, insane thought. Even today, as we walked out of our last ever exam, it was just the most weird feeling - elation at having finished (hopefully) and no longer needing to feel guilty about not studying, but also a certain sadness that I’m probably not going to see the great majority of this great group for quite a while! Who knows where we’ll all be next year, but we’re sure to be spread out. All I can say that I am so grateful for all the people that have supported me and listened to my rants these last few years, without you guys I wouldn’t be here today. We finally made it. We did it. And it’s just the beginning of our careers. :)

Extraction tips

Things I already knew but I just needed a reminder (made such a difference with extractions!):

The luxator is your friend - luxate and elevate until you can just whip it out with the forceps. Some people luxate with forceps but you’ve got a much higher chance of breaking something. You can put quite a lot of force on the instrument, but just be careful, it must be controlled. 

Luxate along the long axis of the tooth as much as you can, although it may be tempting to just get it in as best you can. You’ll expand more of the socket that way. 

Make sure you manage the patient’s expectations.
