Toothache at Night? Here's What to Do

A toothache always seems to hit at the worst possible time, especially when you're trying to sleep. If you're dealing with tooth pain at night, start by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce irritation and clear away any trapped food. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek may also help ease discomfort.

Try to avoid chewing on the painful side and stay away from very hot, cold, or sugary foods until you know what's causing the problem. While over-the-counter pain relief may help temporarily, it won't fix the underlying issue.

The biggest mistake people make is hoping the pain will disappear by morning. Sometimes a nighttime toothache is a sign of infection, decay, or another dental problem that needs professional care. If the pain is severe, keeps you awake, or is accompanied by swelling, contacting an emergency dentist is the safest option.

Okay, fellow Autistic adults, I need help. I have a dentist appointment to get a cavity fixed this week. I have a pretty high tolerance for dental stuff due to having a lot of orthodontic work done as a kid, but I've only had one cavity before (not due to any great dental hygiene practices on my part. I just have tough teeth).

It's been years since I've had any local anaesthesia done at all. I'm kinda freaking out. Any advice? Or heck, I'd appreciate just an updated description of the process from a patient point of view?

Be Intentional

I swear, sometimes I think I write in my sleep.This morning I woke up and found a sticky note attached to my monitor. I have absolutely no recollection of writing it. So I've mainly only had bad interactions with dentist so I need them to know a few things:

1.- Don't assume your patient knows what is going to happen, explain it before you shove a carton in their mouth and leave to take xrays. (I had a huge panic attack with crying)

2.- Specially if they're a minor, don't assume they don't wash their teeth because they are not following the parents' instructions to wash them every day. Sometimes, parents don't teach their kids at all how to wash them or do it 3 times a day or anything.

And then the parent is all like: "Yeah I know, I have told them before (like 1 time) and they don't do it (you didn't even show them how)"

3.- TELL THEM WHAT TO DO WITH THE WEIRD PASTE YOU PUT IN THEIR MOUTH Because we were like uuhh do I wash it or not???

Apparently, I had to wash it, and It's my fault that I didn't know that (fuck you to that one dentist btw)

So. Please be careful. Be kind :(

Patients are not mind readers and you need to tell them exactly what to do and how, and not just shove a new toothbrush into their hands.

Its crazy how many bad experiences I have had on the very few visits I have been in. Like 4/5 bad experiences and the last is neutral.
