A combined creation of an artist, an explorer, nature and the war. Artist Frederic Edwin Church and Dr. Isaac Israel Hayes, an arctic explorer took interest in each other's profession. Church provided lessons to the explorer before his journey for the far north so that he might return with some drawings from his journey. In the landscape, depicting a frame during the winter and early spring of 1864 to 1865, an explorer's ship frozen in ice under a arctic sky filled with aurora borealis and flickering lights from the war. Lights inside the small ship and a tiny dogsled racing towards the ship confirms human presence. The flickering red colored wave of light through the consistent aurora lights and breathtaking nature created a celestial environment. In the chilly predawn glow in the sky as the sun begins to rise, the black family on a dark horse makes their break for freedom. The painting narrates the anxiety about the risks the blacks were willing to take to reach the "free states"; irrespective of the unknown reception these fugitives would receive. “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom.” -- quoted by former slave and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was taught the alphabet in secret at age twelve by his master’s wife, Sophia Auld. As he grew older, Douglass took charge of his own education, obtaining and reading newspapers and books in secret. Douglass was one of the few literate slaves who regularly taught others how to read. Younger slaves frequently listened outside school houses where their masters’ children were learning. Enslaved people who were caught reading or writing were severely punished, as were their teachers. In every instance these slaves and those who taught them undertook a profound risk, which for many was surmounted by the individual’s passion, commitment and imagination. . Amongst the five African American in this painting, three children listening intently to a young girl instructing how to read (Bible on her lap). Nearby an elderly woman, presumably a former slave, appears deep in thought, her gaze indicating her attention is elsewhere. Homer sets up a dichotomy between the two generations, one who certainly has clear memories of the restrictions slavery imposed, and another that has, for the most part, grown up in the freedom of the Reconstruction era. It was illegal for slaves and free blacks to gather for the purpose of learning to read or write. Imprisonment, whippings, and fines were several punishments for disobeying the law. . My reference range from popular cultural iconography, urban signifiers and insignias to various other forms of mediations that surrounds us. I try to decode them through my works putting them into various contexts and situations that in turn looks into these signifies ironically. The appropriated imagery forms an integral part of this strategy often taking a Duchampian mode to critique their received hegemony of meaning formation. Also I have tried to work with all the process of printmaking and love to use those process in various medium of surface not only traditionally used paper for printmaking. Like I use tissue paper, kite surface, acrylic sheet, ply, glass as surface of print.

Madhubani painting

Madhubani painting flourishes in the Mithila region, in the villages of Jitwarpur and Ranti, of the East Indian state of Bihar. These villages are near the city of Madhubani and the painting got its name owing to the origin. The art also stretches its footprints into Nepal too. The painting is being practised by the local people of the region.
