I think we need to focus on making quote tweets for the tweets that talk about him with good intentions or praise him, and we should pay more attention to them rather than the critical and bullying comments. This way, we can encourage more positive content and drown out the negativity. What do you think?
I think you mean well, but that’s not going to work. No one fan base drowns out hundreds of thousands of hateful comments, because too many people who “love them both” refuse to act like it, because they don’t want to isolate the side that isn’t getting the same level of hate.
It is important to me to preface my comments about Connor with, “I adore him” “I think he’s talented” because although true, the internet does not care. I already have had people in my inbox shooting for him, as if I have ever said something bad about him, and it’s solely because I don’t also like F. It’s because I’ve said, if he’s dating F, I will sort of no longer think he’s a bystander. Like, in an honest to god opinion, the optics are not in Connor’s favor at all, even slightly. He currently right now comes across as a guy who dropped his friend publicly as soon as he got famous, and is maybe dating a guy he had an affair with.
That is the unbiased outlook, because that is what his public image currently shows. The only reason I am wanting to be wrong, is because I am a fan. It’s because I saw him before the drama kicked up, and he does still say Hudson is his best friend. However, has he shown it? Not really. Has anyone from the cast shown much care for Hudson outside of, “He’s a nice guy, I love him.”? No. No one has taken a stance against the racism he’s being targeted with. Even Cal liking the post about how Hudson’s sexuality is none of our business, while nice, is not the only issue at hand, yet not a single person he worked with on this show has said anything.
And it’s clear they’re all online enough to see it. And I brought up the thing about Connor, because that is partially the only thing people keep taking away from the hate train. C and F are being hated on due to a rumor, be respectful, who knows if they’re together or not. But like… why is that the only thing worth mentioning? If Connor is with that man, that’s his choice. If Connor is not with that man, it’s still his choice to let the rumors fly. He is choosing to not speak on anything, so it’s not really anyone’s fault that the assumptions being made about him are leaning more and more toward: maybe okay with racist fans, maybe okay with being assumed a homewrecker, maybe okay with being pushed as the sole lead of HR.
Meanwhile, Hudson is publicly stating where he stands: not okay with fans stalking his friends, not okay with hypermasculinity, not okay with poor queer rep, not okay with tokenized non-white characters, not okay with harassing queer/presumed queer people, not okay with forcing people out of the closet, not okay with ice, not okay with trump, not okay with ai… who he seems to be, is out there for us to see.
Connor choosing to be more closed off is fine, but at some point it can’t be the only reason people aren’t allowed to speak less than positive about him. Allowing him to exist in a bubble, while Hudson is repeatedly dragged through the mud, is annoying. White privilege is working exactly as expected to shield Connor from drama, and he is using it to his benefit. Meaning, no amount of nice tweets about Hudson being elevated will drown out the hateful ones, because the hateful ones are not the minority of tweets.
It’s racist fans outside of HRtwt, it’s racist fans inside HRtwt, it’s the media at large, it’s queer people and allies who demand queer rep being showcased in one way, it’s biphobic people who decided bisexuality or any thing adjacent isn’t good enough, it’s the industry, it’s society. And trying to wrap Hudson up in warmth and care isn’t going to stop people being vile, because that’s not how that works. If it’s going to slow down, it has to be at the hands of the people who are being “defended”.
The cast and crew gotta speak, because right now, all it looks like is, “Hudson is fine. He hasn’t mentioned the racism himself because it doesn’t bother him, and he’s straight, so he won’t say stop assuming his sexuality.” Even though… he kind of just did, with the latter. They’re still going to twist it though, and still continue to ignore the racism, because none of the people discussing the online hate, who have larger platforms, are willing to get intersectional with it. It’s always, “Stop trying to force this man out of the closet! Stop harassing a rumored queer couple!” and never, “Someone’s sexuality being unlabeled does not give you the right to be racist toward them! Stop spewing racist hate to defend a rumored queer couple!”
