Ianâs not a weirdo or anything, itâs just his neighbour across the narrow alleyway doesnât have curtains in his living room so Ian can see right in. Heâs not spying on him or anything but itâs kinda hard not to look.
And ok, maybe Ian has to move his curtains a bit to see him but itâs not weird.
Itâs not.
He doesnât know this guyâs name. He tried to say hello once when he saw him outside but the guy just gave him the finger.
Rude. But Ian canât lie, heâs into that.
The guy is hot. Tattooed hands and pretty blue eyes. Great arms. A perfect ass.
So, maybe Ian is a little bit of a creep because the guy always walks around in just his boxers when heâs at home. But Ian could swear that the guy has looked directly at him a couple of times so heâs pretty sure that the guy knows heâs being watched and apparently doesnât give a shit.
Itâs kind of thrilling.
âââ
Heâs a drug dealer - Ianâs seen him rolling joints, bagging weed and counting handfuls of cash. And he loves horror movies - it seems to be all he watches. The volume so loud that Ian can sort of hear the screams sometimes.
Ianâs probably getting a little bit obsessed because itâs not just that he jerks off to thoughts of this guy, he also daydreams about sitting next to him on the couch, shifting closer and closer till heâs flush against him, maybe slipping one arm around the guyâs shoulders, leaning in for a kiss as some teenager gets chased by a monster on the tv.
Heâs being ridiculous. Heâs picturing boyfriend time when he doesnât even know this guyâs name or if heâs even gay.
âââ
Ian could just go over there and ask him out. But what if heâs not gay? Ianâs not sure heâll get a polite response from Mr. Tattooed-Knuckles-Guns-On-His-Coffee-Table-Violent-Horror-Movie-Watching-Drug-Dealer. This is the South Side and Ianâs not stupid.
Still. Heâs so desperate to know. Maybe heâll get a hint, some kind of subtle indication that the guy is gay.
And as if by magic. He does. Except itâs not a hint or a subtle indication. Itâs the equivalent of a flashing neon sign.
The guy is on the couch when Ian takes a look one evening. In his boxers. Looking hot as fuck. Itâs nothing out of the ordinary until he turns on the TV. Ian expects him to put on a horror movie but he doesnât. Itâs something else. A TV show maybe?
No. Wait. Not a TV show. And the guy is slipping his hand into his boxers. Thereâs two guys on the screen. And holy shit, itâs porn. Gay porn. It takes Ian a second to notice the top has red hair and the bottom has black hair. His frozen to the spot, just staring.
Is that a coincidence orâŠ..?
The guy turns, one hand still stroking himself, looks Ian dead in the eye and fucking winks.
Ian ducks down in shock and sits on the floor. Heart beating wildly. He sits up, peering over the bottom window sill. The guy is focused on the TV, jerking off. Ian shouldnât watch but he canât stop.
When the guy finishes, he turns back towards Ian and gives him the finger as he laughs.
Ianâs embarrassed. Heâs more than a little bit turned on. And a little bit confused - is the guy fucking with him or is he into him?
âââ
He doesnât see the guy again for a few days. Which is weird, heâs usually home. He doesnât seem to have much of a social life.
Ianâs about to get ready for bed when out of the corner of his eye - something catches his attention. The light has come on in the guyâs living room.
Heâs back. And heâs in terrible shape - battered and bruised and covered in blood. He hangs onto the doorframe before slumping down onto the floor.
Fuck. Ian shifts into EMT mode, he grabs his first aid kit and hurries next door.
The guy groans as Ian kneels next to him, âMy name is Ian, Iâm an EMT, Iâm going to help you. Can you tell me what happened?â
âNone ofâŠyour fuckinâ business.â
âOk. Do you think you can turn over for me? So I can check you over?â
âThe fuck?â He slurs, rolling over so heâs on his back. He blinks at Ian. âEy, hot guy.â
âWhat?â Ian laughs, as he cleans Mickeyâs wounds.
âHotâŠguy. Next door.â Heâs clearly a bit drunk as well as in a lot of pain. He can barely keep his eyes open.
âUh, yeah, I live next door. Dunno about the hot guy part.â It seems the injuries arenât too deep which is good but Ian still takes care to bandage them well.
âSo hot.â His eyes are closed now. âBeenâŠ.watchingâŠme.â
Ianâs face flushes in embarrassment, âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have been. I wonât do it again. Iâm really sorry.â
âShutâŠâ He takes a deep breath, âshut the fuck up. I like it.â He slowly opens his eyes, âLike you.â
Ian bites back a smile, âOh. ThatâsâŠ.nice.â Heâs cringes at his own awkwardness. âThank youâŠ.uh-whatâs your name?â
âMickey.â
âWell, youâre all patched up now, Mickey. Let me help you up.â
Mickeyâs a heavy weight as Ian hauls him to his feet, throwing an arm around his waist to support him.
âFuck. So strong.â
Ian laughs, not knowing how to respond. He leads Mickey to the couch but Mickey shakes his head, âI wanna go to bed.â
âOk.â Itâs a small apartment and Ian can see the bed through an open door, âHere we go.â
Ian lowers Mickey down onto the bed but when he goes to straighten up, Mickey pulls him down. âWhat ifâŠIâve got a concussion or whatever. Need toâŠstay here with me.â
âUm, I think youâre ok, Mickey. I checked you over but- I could stay. If you want. On the couch.â
âNoooo.â He frowns and Ian stifles a laugh at how cute he is, âCâmon hot Ian. Get in the-â he yawns loudly, âbed.â
âMickey, youâre drunk and injured. You donât know what youâre saying.â
âDo know.â He mumbles.
âIâll be in the living room and Iâll check on you.â
âââ
Ian doesnât sleep much, occasionally peeking into Mickeyâs bedroom to check on him. He canât stop thinking about Mickey drunkenly calling him hot. Mickeyâs into him. He canât stop smiling.
He does eventually fall asleep and wakes to sunlight streaming through the window and Mickey standing over him. âOh, hi. How are you feeling?â
âWho the fuck are you?â Mickey asks, arms crossed and a pissed expression on his face. âYouâve got three seconds to get the fuck outta my apartment before I kick your ass.â
âUh-â Ian stammers, âIâm Ian. Your neighbour? Iâm an EMT. I helped you last night? You were injured? AndâŠkinda drunk. Maybe more than I realised if you donât remember-â
Mickey frowns and then grins, âRelax. Iâm fuckinâ with you. I know who you are. I remember last night.â
âOh.â Ian relaxes, âAsshole.â
Mickey laughs, rubs one finger over an eyebrow, suddenly shy, âThanks forâŠpatching me up or whatever.â
âItâs no problem.â
They share a long look. Ian canât help it, he has to ask, âSoâŠyou remember last night, huh? All of it?â
âNot all of it.â
âYou donât remember calling meâŠhot?â Heâs teases, loving how Mickey squirms. âSaying that you like me?â
âWhy the fuck would I do that?â He shoves Ianâs legs off the couch and sits down next to him, trying not to smile.
âI donât know. But I just want to say thatâŠ.I like you too.â
âYeah, I know that.â He laughs, âCanât take your eyes off me. You shoulda seen your face when you saw me the other night.â Mickey makes an exaggerated face - mouth wide open and eyes wide.
Ian blushes at the memory, âI was surprised. I really wasnât expecting you to jack off in plain sight, where anyone could see.â
âIâm on the second floor. Perfectly private. No one can see in.â
âApart from-â
âYou.â Mickeyâs cheeks are pink.
âCoulda bought curtains.â
âDonât like âem.â He shrugs, licks his lips.
âInteresting.â Ian shifts closer to Mickey, âYâknow what else was interesting? Your choice of video.â
âJust the first thing I found.â
âOh, no meaning to it then?â
âNah. Not at all.â
âSo you didnât choose it because you like the idea of a hot redhead topping-â
Ianâs words are cut off by Mickey pressing a firm kiss to his lips and this time, when Mickey asks Ian into his bed, Ian says yes.
Mickey blinks slowly, a white room coming into focus with every blink. Thereâs a steady beeping and a voice talking to him.Â
âMick?â the voice asks âAre you awake?â
Mickey tries to respond but canât form any words. He hears the voice call for a nurse as he shuts his eyes once again.Â
The next time heâs awake for longer. Ian is next to him but he looks different. Younger, hair longer and less muscular. Mickey furrows his eyebrows as he takes him in.Â
âWhatâ Mickey coughs
âHeyâ Ian smiles âYour dad hit you in the head pretty hard, huh?â
â°â†âAt times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if youâre living with this illness and functioning at all, itâs something to be proud of, not ashamed of." - Carrie Fisher
âI fucked up, Ian.â Thatâs the first thing Mickey says when Ian opens the door to find him bloodied and bruised. âI-â
Ian doesnât let him finish, just drags him inside and pushes him down onto the couch that theyâve spent many a night together on. Mickey protests, says he doesnât have time but Ianâs got the first aid kit and heâs patching Mickey up. Softly, carefully.
When he finishes, Mickey lights up a cigarette. Heâs nervous, avoiding Ianâs gaze. He only smokes a little before stubbing it out in the ashtray thatâs still filled from the night before. Theyâd watched a movie together before getting distracted halfway through.
âI gotta go.â He finally looks Ian in the eye. âIâm sorry.â He leans in for a gentle kiss.
âWhat-â
âI just want you to know that I love you.â Mickeyâs never said that before. Neither has Ian, despite wanting to so badly.
Mickey kisses him again.
âI love you too.â Ian says, it should be a good moment but all he feels is unease.
Mickey gives him a sad smile. âJust remember that. Ok? Afterwards? That I love you. Iâve always loved you.â
âAfter what? What are you talking about?â The panic is rising now.
âSome shit has gone down. Itâs bad. Real bad, Ian. I shouldnât even be here but I just had to say goodbye before-â
âGoodbye?! Where are you going?â
âAs far as I can. Probably wonât get too far though, theyâll find me. You canât run from them.â
âWho-â He grabs Mickey, tries to pull him close but Mickey is standing, tugging himself away from Ian and towards the door. âWhat happened? Tell me! I can help-â
He laughs bitterly. âCanât help me, Ian. No one can. TheyâreâŠ.demons. Into that satanic shit. Posing as a run of the mill drug dealing biker gang, thatâs why Terry thought it was safe to move in on their turf but-â
âBut?â Ian takes Mickeyâs hands.
âWell, letâs just say that shit happened and now theyâre out for revenge. In a big fuckinâ way. Already got Terry and a couple of cousins. I canât find Iggy or Colin or any of my uncles.â
âTerryâsâŠdead?â
âYup. And it wasnât quick.â
It wouldnât have been - everyone knows what the demons are capable of. âIâm sorry.â
âNo youâre not. Itâs ok.â
âJust stay here.â Ian brushes past the uncomfortable Terry subject.
âAnd lead them straight to you? I would never let them hurt you. I have to go, ok? I love you. Donât forget that.â Mickey blinks back tears and once again, tries to go for the door.
Ian doesnât hesitate. No longer worried about hiding his secret, he closes his eyes and lets the magic flow through him.
The whole room glows red, warmth floods through the air and in a second everything looks normal again.
Mickey looks around wild eyed, âWhat the fuck was that?â
âProtection spell. No one will be able to tell youâre here, even if they saw you walk in.â Ian feels exposed, his heart hammering in his chest. He braces himself for the disgust that will inevitably come now that Mickey knows the truth.
âSeriously? How did you-? I donât understand-â Mickey steps closer, confusion across his face.
âIâve got magic.â He says simply - the words are simple but itâs a burden heâs carried his whole life.
Theyâre still by the door, Mickey still looks ready to bolt, so Ian leads him back to the couch. âTrust me, please. No one can see you here. I promise.â
Mickey hesitates but then sits, âCourse I trust you. I just canât believeâŠ.youâve got magic.â
âYeah.â
âWhy did you tell me?â
âI wanted to butâŠâ Ian pauses, takes a breath, âI know what people think. That if youâve got magic, youâre bad. Evil. Thought you might think that about me.â
Mickey shakes his head, âIan, youâre not bad. I could never think that you were bad. Besides, I deal drugs and give out beatings for a living, you being magic is nothing.â
âYou donât think itâsâŠdisgusting?â
âFuck off. No!â Mickey laughs, before giving Ian a soft smile, eyes roaming over Ianâs face, âNo. But I wish youâd told me.â
âIâm sorry. I was scared.â
Mickeyâs silent for a moment and he nods, âI get that.â Kisses Ian again, pulls away slowly, âGod, I love you so fuckinâ much.â
âMickey-â
âI still gotta go though.â
âNo you donât.â
âI canât stay in your apartment forever. You canât protect me, theyâve got all sorts of powers. And I donât want toâŠbe a burden or whatever.â
âYouâre not a burden, Mickey.â Ian cups the side of his face, âI can sort this. Iâm gonna keep you safe.â
âHow?â
âIâll find them, wipe their memories of you. Make sure that even if someone mentions your name or they see your face theyâll have no idea who you are.â
âToo fuckinâ dangerous, Iâm not letting you go anywhere near them.â
âI can protect myself. They wonât notice me or even be able to sense Iâve got anything to do with you.â
âNo way. Absolutely no fuckinâ way. Just let me go.â He moves to stand up but falls back down to the couch heavily.
Ian winces, âIâm sorry, Mickey, I donât want to use magic on you but you need to stay here.â
âWhat did you do?â He can talk but he canât move.
âSort of like a magical handcuff? You canât leave the couch.â
âIan! Donât fuckinâ do this!â
âIâm really sorry but Iâll be back soon. Wonât take me that long to find them, that kind of magic is easy to sense.â He kisses the top of Mickeyâs head and steps away. âI love you.â
âIan!â Mickey shouts as Ian opens the door, âI love you too.â
ââ
Mickey struggles against the magic but itâs pointless - the magic is strong, keeping him firmly in place. But he doesnât stop fighting, the thought of Ian even going near this fucked up situation terrifies him.
Itâs been hours. Mickey stares at the clock - itâs nearly midnight. He doesnât know whatâs happening. His imagination is running wild. He keeps straining against the magic, keeps hoping he can just -
âFuck!â Mickey grunts in surprise as he falls forward. The magic has stopped. Heâs free.
But what does that mean?
Mickeyâs stomach drops - maybe the magic has stopped because something has happened to Ian. Heâs darting towards the door within seconds, hell bent on tracking the demons down. If theyâve done anything to Ian - if theyâve -
Heâs brought to a stop by the door opening. Ian shuffles in, paler than usual, âHey.â He says, all casual like heâd just run out for a pack of cigarettes. âYou alright?â
Mickey hugs him tightly, âAm I? FuckâŠare you? What happened?â
âIâm ok. Just tired. Takes a lot out of me but itâs done,â Ian smiles, âYouâre safe.â
âThank you.â
âIâd do anything to keep you safe. I love you.â
The sound of his voice carries far longer than necessary in such a small church.
Ianâs blessed words fly over the casket in front of him, and out through the wooden church doors, never quite landing where theyâre supposed to.Â
The casket is draped in a beautiful sea of flowers. Various shades of white, green and blue.
The lilies remind him of someone he loved.Â
Loves.Â
Lately heâs not sure.Â
The burning candles crackle in sympathy with the motherâs cry.
Her son was young. Only a year out of high school.Â
There are not enough benches for a whole town inside the church. And yet theyâre all here. Shoulder to shoulder on the creaking wooden benches. Cross in one hand, a bottle of salt in the other. Anger and revenge carried on their faces.
Because itâs the 5th in only two months.Â
Because theyâre not usually this young.Â
It nags at Ianâs conscience.Â
The casket is closed, but everyone in this room knows that if they were to look, they would find two tiny holes in the neck.
No one dares to step outside after the sun has gone down, and every porch is barricaded by holy relics. The scent of garlic hangs in the air whenever Ian walks around the neighbourhood.
That one is a myth, Ian knows, has been told, but he still hangs them up outside the church because it makes everyone feel safer.
It has to stop, because scared people turn into angry people, and angry people turn to reckless people who end up in a casket in Ianâs church.Â
Or something far worse happens.
He has heard rumors of revenge. A planned attack, ambush. Kill the beast, cut its head off, burn it on a wooden stick!
It makes his stomach churn.
No one knows what the beast looks like, except for Ian.Â
And unfortunately for him, itâs the most beautiful being heâs ever seen.
Which is why his mouth feels dry, his words feel hollow and his prayers can only be interpreted as lies.
Because he let the beast in, and heâs the reason it wonât leave.
When Ian has him in his bed he can pretend it doesnât exist. The grieving families, the scared children, his faith. The beast.
Because how can it?
Mickey, whoâs so tender and pliant under Ianâs touch, the most beautiful thing Ian has ever seen, is the same reason he has put five innocent people six feet underground.Â
He feels the cross behind him burn into his scalp as he says his prayer and his mouth runs on autopilot until he says:Â

Hii, @callivich is right, not many fics with that plotline, the ones mentioning the cartel are mostly about Mickey working with them. So, a couple I could remember/find:
The Edges of Things - Just a few months after Ian and Mickey's wedding, the cartel makes its move.
Snake In The Grass - Mickey's old cartel catches up to him in prison.
Runaways - After feeling safe the two lovers learn that the cartel is coming for Mickey. They only have one clear choice...RUN.
Disclaimer, this one is pretty heavy and graphic, I personally couldn't handle reading it years ago but it fits the topic:
Stone Walls - One does not simply roll on a Mexican Cartel and walk away unscathed. Mind the tags.
And to finish is a nice one about Mickey's negotiations before prison :)
show me love, glory from above - The missing scene of Mickey bartering for where he gets to stay and who he gets to stay with in prison in exchange for his testimony on the Sinaloa Cartel.
And definitely write it yourself, can't be too many fics ;)
