This came to me in a vision and I simply must share it immediately.

Eva Stratt doesn't go to jail for the things she did during the creation of the Hail Mary. She doesn't go to jail because she forced Ryland Grace aboard the ship against his will. No, she can't. She has diplomatic immunity concerning anything to do with the project.

What she goes to jail for, is releasing Ryland Grace's full video logs to the public after the World Government Leaders decide to try to edit and bury them.

She lets them put handcuffs on her, lets them carry her off to spend the rest of her life behind bars because she refuses to let the memory of Ryland Grace, the man who saved Earth (and Erid) be tainted. She's a historian, and this is her way of making sure the man she betrayed gets his story put into record properly.

It's the least she can do for him, after all she forced him to do.

When he found out about what happened to Grace, Rocky was reasonably horrified and livid. On their way to Erid, Grace hears the most beautiful tune he cannot seem to understand. It doesn’t sound Eridian, it just sounds like regular music. He sees Rocky on his laptop messing with Garage Band. Grace asks what’s up, very amused. Rocky tells him,

I’m writing more about this in my fic (stay tuned!!) but in my mind Eridians are similar to humans on a social and tactical level. ie: oh yes sir these rock spiders cuddle!! Scratching would be a very common way of showing love, and ofc you gotta watch one another sleep as close as possible <3

Rocky indulges almost every time Grace wants a cuddle (was he gonna say no? This is his best friend, a formerly squishy alien being put into a body he is entirely new to, and someone he loves on basically a cosmic level) the only time he does not is when Grace is genuinely inconveniences him, or when he wants to tease Grace a little bit. In the first few weeks of Grace being Eridian, him and Rocky are practically inseparable- reminiscent of when they first came to Erid. Rocky uses this so his advantage to be silly sometimes :3

I have this headcanon that eridians have soulmates that they can recognized by a specific song or melody.

For the eridian culture which sound and songs are so important, they have this idea that if you find all your soulmates (platonic or romantic) you can create an harmony with their songs, an harmony unique for each eridian.

For Rocky is easy to know that Adrian is the one, because their mere presences, the way they move and sing is just right, it is the melody that Rocky had been chasing since he knew about soulmates. After finding his romantic soulmate Rocky - thinking that there was no way that the song that Adrian produced could be better- assumes that he was destinate to only have a romantic soulmate and that his harmony is already complete.

It isn't until he is deep in the space, far away from Adrian and everything he has known, that Rocky discovers that the hearbeat of Grace turns to be another piece of his harmony.

When they get to Erid and Rocky is able to present his platonic soulmate to his romantic one he can finally hear the harmony that he didn't know he was longing for.

When Graces dies, so does the harmony. Rocky can still rememeber his hearbeat, he has perfect memory, he is able to recreated in his mind, but is just not the same.

Orbit

Finally done this after a couple days! I love drawing movie stills.

When I initially started this I hadn't seen any art of Grace as the sun with planets orbiting him, now I see so many!!! It's an obvious idea so I was wondering why no one had done it. People had LOL. Anyway, here he is <3

I tried very hard to make the constellations Canis Major and Vulpecula (Greater Hound and Little Fox) (accidentally said that the constellation was Sirius whoops.)

My explanation for the book v. film difference on Eridian eating customs is that movie!Rocky was full-on bluffing.

Like he was just calling human eating disgusting, what was he going to do, say "okay actually the way Eridians eat is so incredibly gross we do it in private sound-proofed rooms"? And cede the conversational high-ground and sense of species superiority to Grace??? Nah, it looks beautiful, definitely.

Then Grace says "show me" and Rocky is stuck now, he's committed. So he just bucks up and goes all-in. It's not like he'll see the human after this is all done, he can pretend it's totally normal just this once.

Eventually before they reach Erid Rocky is gonna have to come clean, and Grace will laugh at him for an hour straight.
