-Queen of Nothing by Holly Black
The Keeper of Moonlight
She was the Moon,
Her radiance could brighten up the darkest of the nights.
He was a Knight,
A wanderer looking for a path to follow.
She followed him everywhere at the darkest of hours,
Lighting it up as if it was her sole duty.
Soon, the New Moon came.
He got wounded, and everything went black.
Time went by,
He met with an Eclipse.
He got mesmerized at the mere sight of her,
Erasing moon from his memory.
Chasing Eclipse,
Bidding farewell to the moon,
Tearing the red strings as if they never met.
However, He forgot something important,
The moon will be the moon in all its phases.
He erased her,
She couldn't.
She saw him happy,
His happiness is all she ever wanted.
So she decided to keep a silent watch over him,
Even if it meant from a distance,
Even if it meant him never finding his way back to her.
-A short fable because I couldn't sleep and my restless brain wanted to keep writing despite being exhausted from the day.
A Survivor
"Good girls die young,
Don't you know they got 'em?
All lined up with names on their coffins.
Mary Beth died with stars in her eyes,
I've been running from a ghost all my life..."
Life was different,
I was different.
What will she think of me?
I wonder..
Will she say "How stupid can you be?"
Or something more like, "You shouldn't have come here..not to this place."
She kept falling..
She once had someone to catch her,
But now looking back,
She was all alone.
She had empathy, loads of it.
She cared deeply.
Alas!
Now she's a just a shell of it all.
She still cares even after everything,
But the spark that made her who she was,
The spark that was unique to her,
They took it from her.
It's like watching someone rip away her rose coloured glasses,
Smashing it onto the ground then stomping onto it,
Looking dead into her eyes with a wicked smirk, while her lips wobble and she shuts her eyes close hard.
It's painful to watch her go through it.
Now, it seems like a distant memory.
Yet, I am here still watching and grieving.
Grieving my old self.
I envy how others were able to move forward so easily like it meant nothing.
It's my battle.
A battle on survival and if anything I learnt in a year, it's that I am a survivor.
Every Katherine was once a Katerina, until she met her Klaus;
Mine was You.
Nostalgia.
Grief.
I hardly recognise myself.
I want to ask you, "How did you do it?"
But, the Katherine in me knows she's all alone and she doesn't need a man to save her.
It's been her versus the world since the beginning.
Healing.. she'll heal herself.
She refuses to ask for help from someone who left her when she begged him not to, when she needed him more than she needed to breathe..
So no, I won't come to you..
You moved on, erased us from existence.
Let me take my time and one day, I will heal and get my spark back.
I know what last year me will say to me,
It won't be what I said earlier,
It will be "I am proud of you for being brave."
Good girls die young,
But, we all knew, I ain't no good girl.
I am a survivor.
-This song "Good Girls" by Josie Edwards has been on a loop on my mind for days, so I got my inspiration for this from that song.
