Week 9 Prompt

The Multimodal text I have chosen to discuss is a presentation by a student called Simon Link on ‘kids needing more recess time’.

I have chosen this Multimodal text as I believe this could be a great presentation to show students as an example of what a well-prepared and researched presentation looks like. I would use this video within an oral presentation unit, where students will be required to create their own speeches about a topic. I would first discuss with students what they think key aspects are which make up a good speech and then would present students with Simon’s speech video. During the video I would get students to list down different aspects they notice within Simon’s speech and why these aspects make it a good speech, such as Simon’s use of pace, voice projection/alteration and expression. Throughout Simon’s speech, he used different modalities including the amplitude and projection of his voice, facial expression, gesture, pace and fluency to engage and capture his audience. This is an excellent video to use to display to students how they can enhance their oral language skills.

Week 7 Prompt

My first resource is this YouTube video by Ted-Ed on how to use a semicolon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th-zyfvwDdI 

I have always found the semicolon the hardest part of punctuation to use in my work. I have always struggled to grasp with how to use the punctuation mark properly and where to place them. This Ted-Ed clip breaks it down super clearly and I believe it is a must-watch for anyone who is still unsure about how to use a semicolon effectively. The Ted-Ed YouTube channel as a whole is a great resource for learning about a very wide range of topics and are very engaging, fun videos that are short and sweet, and an easy watch. 

For my second resource, I believe that Fuse is a fantastic resource for discovering resources and new, exciting ideas for lessons to teach. I have used it on placement and found it to be a great help in planning hands-on lessons. I believe it is essential for any pre-service teacher to have a browse through and broaden their resource bank with exciting websites and provided resource packs. It is an added bonus that all lessons and resources identify what parts of the curriculum they hit, with some even providing specific curriculum links.

Reading Rockets is an online resource that makes accessing children's literature extremely easy by providing useful filters, including age range, reading level and format as well as providing links to purchasing the book via amazon or audible. On top of this useful book search, Reading Rockets has interviews with famous authors and illustrators, strategies for teaching struggling readers, and a huge amount of information on a range of topics involving reading. I highly recommend exploring through the website as there is an endless amount of useful information to read through.

Prompt 2

On my grade 5 placement, I observed many kids not understanding apostrophes in possessive nouns. Most students understood when they need to put an apostrophe, but many had difficulty figuring out where to place it. I made this poster with the goal to break down the placement of the apostrophe into simple, easy to understand sentences. I think it is effective as it is simply laid out, easy to read and hits every point of apostrophe placement within a possessive noun, as well as providing useful examples.

Prompt 1

Captain Underpants had to be my favourite book as a kid in primary school, as it was fun, visually engaging and in some cases interactive. Things the ‘flip-o-ramas’ that just was 2 drawings that when flipped, resembled movement, had me as a kid really engaged in the book and having a good time while reading it. On top of this, the story was about two students drawing and making their own comic books, which at the time was very relatable to myself. I’d find incorporating books like Captain Underpants into literacy teachings to be extremely beneficial, as it does contain complex enough language to suit a higher year level, while also having pictures, fun characters and even comic book style pages occasionally throughout to keep students interested.
