Gladiolus hears her before he even reaches the corner—a sharp HIC! that shatters the quiet of the hallway, sounding oddly like a chocobo stepping on a squeaky toy.

He stops mid-stride as another one follows—sharper, louder—like she’s trying to signal an incoming airship. When he rounds the corner, there she is, his little sister, Iris, standing alone, looking thoroughly betrayed by her own lungs. He can’t stop the laugh that slips out of him.

He steps up behind her and gives her a solid Amicitia-style slap on the back.

Silence. For a second, he almost believes it worked—

HIC! Even bigger. Gods.

“At this rate,” he says, folding his arms, “you’re gonna wake the Astrals.”
