Prompt 8

Before searching up #picturebooks, i honestly thought I would come across my childhood favourites, and know most of the books that would pop up because i read so much when I was younger. I was surprised to find that the search showed up with picture books that I have never heard or seen before, which is so interesting to realise! It’s so interesting to see what people are reading these days, and it makes me excited to experience all the books i never have read, when I become a teacher and reading it to my students!

I came across this post, and i could relate so well with it because even though a picture book may only contain the elements of words and pictures, it has the ability to bring out emotions in people. That is my favourite thing about picture books!

Prompt 7

Create:

Imagine you were Albert. Think of another name for the restaurant, ‘Thai-rrific!’

Create your own flyer/slogan for the new restaurant.

Create a new blurb for the book.

Evaluating:

Do you think Albert's feeling towards his Thai background and family restaurant will change by the end of the book?

What do you think Albert meant when he said, ‘I felt like a walking billboard for my parents’?

Analysing:

Compare and contrast Albert's and Kitchai’s (Albert’s brother) feelings towards the restaurant. Give evidence to support your answer.

Analyse Albert’s tone of voice when he speaks about his Thai culture/background. Why do you think he uses this tone?

In the text, Albert states that he gets called nicknames at school. How would you feel/react if you were being called these names when you did not want to?

Prompt 6

The video that i have chosen to focus on a front loading activity is ‘discover the diversity Of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language. In this video, different groups of students are singing, head, shoulders, knees and toes in 5 different aboriginal languages; Kalaw Kawaw Ya, Warrgamay, Nywaygi, Yugambeh or Wiradjuri. This is a great video to show to the students that there are so many different languages in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

In my activity, I would pair the students, and then assign each of the pairs to one of the languages heard in the song. They are then to practice the lyrics to the movements, just like in the video. After they have practice, they are to perform to one other group, first stating what language they will be singing.

Prompt 5

Sentence 1:

In the frost, cold winters night air, I felt myself collapse into a heap on the floor. There was a silence that followed. I just felt hollow inside. With no food and no strength inside me, it was like I was transparent, with nothing inside me. It was as if I died.

Sentence 2:

Somehow I felt like I was invisible, like the world had forgotten about me and moved on.

A 10-20 minute activity I would do, before the book is read, it to make the students create a Y chart, which each sectioned labelled, ‘what it looks like’, ‘what it feels like’, and ‘what it sounds like’. I would print off some pictures that the book may have, or pictures that relate to the book and showcase it to the students. The students are to use their own interpretations and personal knowledge in filling out the Y chart.

Prompt 4

During this placement, I was placed in a foundations class, and I enjoyed it a lot. I learnt a lot during this placement, where I had the opportunity to run two literacy rotations on my full control days. The students were learning the rule of silent e/ magic e. 

One thing that I didn’t like was that it was introduced to the kids through a power point. The kids were confused and did not grasp the concept well. They struggled at the beginning and looked bored. What I really liked was that during the literacy rotations, all the activities were hands on, such as word bingo and playing on the iPad. Videos were played to show how the silent e worked, and I think that through these engaging activities, the kids began to grasp the concept, that the ‘silent e’ had the power to make the vowel letter say its name rather than sound. Every morning the students read books, with the help of myself, my mentor teacher and parent. I noticed the strong readers always had support at home, and the students who had trouble reading did not have the opportunity to read at home with their parents. Everyday, they always focused on a new letter or sound. I had the opportunity to teach the letter ‘U’, ‘A’ and ‘O’.I would model how to write it on the board, then ask the students what sound it makes and what words started with that letter. The students will then come to the board and write the letter. They would then go and write and trace the letter and sentences that was pre written in their books. Some students found it easy, but there were students who found it very difficult to write the letter and could not grasp it. Something that I learnt during this placement was that each student has a different pace in learning literacy and that teachers need to work to build their confidence rather than push them too much.

Prompt 3

This is a written sample of a students work during one of my placements. The student is in grade 1, and was writing a creative piece on snow tigers. In this writing sample, a 6+1 writing trait that can be improved is the ‘conventions’ trait. It can be seen that they didn’t put a capital I in some of the sentences, and there are some spelling errors such as fewend (found), mawten (mountain)-  although I do think that the spelling is very close to how the word sounds.

The last time I made a classroom poster was on placement. It was for a social skills lesson where the students had to reflect on kindness. They made compliment cards, so i displayed them in the classroom, so they could be reminded of all the wonderful things that other students thought about them. I had a lot of fun making the display!

Prompt 1

I loved it when teachers read to me in class, as I remember at school, we would always grab a piece of fruit while listening to the teacher read to us. It was very relaxing and it was a great way for me to take my mind off things. i distinctively remember in grade 4, when my teacher read me a book about Helen Keller. It was called ‘The story of my life’, by Helen Keller. I remember my teacher reading it, and me being absolutely astonished and amazed about her life, and how she succeeded in life without being able to see or hear. I never wanted the story to end. Even though I probably couldn’t grasp or understand everything that was written in the book, as i was only 9, that memory of being read an incredible story has always stuck with me. Being read that book really impacted me to be grateful that I can see and hear, as maybe I should be more grateful for the simple things. It taught me empathy, and how incredibly patient the teacher who helped Helen Keller would have been. It still impacts me to this day, as I would love to be as inspiring as that one teacher to my students, even if it is not in the same context.
