Prompt 6
While exploring videos on the Indigenous topic, I came across this video ‘Discover the diversity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages’ on the Splash ABC website. The video caters to the language and variation substrand from the Australian Curriculum and is perfect for year 6 to make them aware and acknowledge the several ‘social and geographical dialects’ prevalent in Australia apart from the Australian English that we speak.
This video would be really good for the frontloading sessions for the picture book ‘Welcome To Country’ by ‘Aunty Joy Murphy’. The students through this video will explore the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ culture and practices. After watching the video, the students will make notes of important actions and try and predict their meaning. Further, highlighting the similarities and differences in a class discussion. Students will have an idea about the language and the communication patterns of a different cultural group within the same country, thus, exploring the diversity in Australia, which they would come across in the book.
