The state sector sees its fortunes rise under Xi Jinping
President Xi Jinping - watch out for Guo Jin Min Tui! - 国进民退! The China Trend(r): Despite fears that the Chinese economy will soon take over the world (it is not projected to pass the USA in GDP until the year 2027-2029), the economy is not without its Achilles heels. One such weak link is the paternal protection provided by the government for the public sector. Surprisingly, Xi Jinping is not aiming to reduce this phenomenon, but rather expand it. Bottom line effect: This has the effect of putting private companies as a disadvantage as they have to overpay for energy resources and for access to capital (energy/finance being the biggest part of the public sector). The name for this is Guo jin min tui (国进民退) is a phenomenon in the Chinese economy, meaning "the state advances, the private sector retreats"(1). Xi - Look out not from the West and Mr. Trump, but rather from above -- your increasingly bloated 1980s style Government Sector! It might be just enough of an overhang to someday bring your entire government down, a hidden form of protectionism that hurts your own domestic private companies the most. Xi, if I were you, I would protect my privates! (1) Wikipedia: Despite being less profitable - the average return on equity is 4% - state-owned enterprises have easier access to funding than purely private enterprises. The government has encouraged state-owned enterprises to consolidate, favoured them in regulation, and awarded them contracts and subsidies; this crowds out other competitors, both domestic and foreign, undermining the economy.
