Lightroom is a fantastic piece of software that gives you the ability to adjust the white balance of any photo to better suit the lighting conditions in which the photo was taken. Whether it was tungsten, with flash, or in the daylight. It is possible to adjust the white balance in three different ways. Firstly you can choose a preset white balance option. Secondly, you can use a dropper to select an area of the photo that you want to be a neutral colour. Finally, you can use tint, and temp slides to fine tune the white balance. This tutorial will teach how to use each of these three options. The first thing to do is take a look at the image below. This is a photo that was shot in a studio with a DSLR, and flash light. A white background was used, but if you look closer, you will see that not all of the white looks particularly white, instead it looks red. This probably happened because the colour temperature was too high. This warm temperature effect on the white background effects the picture of the product. For this reason it is vital to get the white balance correct. This is extremely easy to do in Lightroom.First Method - Using The White Balance Preset Option Go to the develop module and open the basic panel. Next go to the WB pop up menu, and choose an option from there. The As Shot setting allows you to revert the image back to its original form, as it was when it first came from the camera. Auto uses the image data to calculate the white balance. Second Method - Using The White Balance Selection Tool Once again, go to the develop module and open the basic panel. Next click the 'White Balance Selector' tool. You can also press the W key. Now move the 'White Balance Selector' into the area of the photo that should be a neutral gray. Don't select any areas that aren't 100% white, or any spectral highlights. After you have found the correct area, click on it. There is a live preview area in the top left corner, this allows you to see any results before you make them final. Third Method - Using The Tint & Temp Sliders For the pros, who aren't willing to rely an auto options, or tools, there is a tint, and temp slider control that allows you to adjust the white balance manually, down to the last detail. Tint - This allows you to fine tune the white balance, specifically to counteract any magenta or green tint. If you move the slider left (which is negative values), you add green to the photo. Whereas if you move it to the right (which is positive values), you will add magenta. Temp - This uses the Kelvin colour temperature scale to fine tune the white balance. If you move the slider to the left, it will look cooler. Move it to the right, it will appear warmer. Alternatively, set a specific Kelvin value in the temp text box, this allows you to match the colour to the ambient light. If you click the current value in the box, it will allow you to enter a new value. To sum up, whether you have used the dropper, or chosen a preset, you will still probably have to do some manual tweaking till you get the ideal result. In this case, head back to the white balance menu, and click either temp or tint once.
