With the permission and advice of a local gardener here in Bejuco we went on a little treasure hunt this morning and found this cacao tree with these beautiful purple fruits. This soft orange fruit has a sour taste but contains twice the amount of vitamin C of an average orange. It is a Sundrop or Guayabilla and is used to make juice or jam. We ate this one in a smoothie yesterday and it was delicious mixed with bananas and pineapple. Since we only have one bush of these at Finca EcoVida and it has just started fruiting we have been saving all the seeds to replant. . We have already planted 500 trees at Finca EcoVida but to raise funds to finish our tree planting project we have decided to offer some of our extra plants in our greenhouse in Playa Bejuco for sale. All funds raised will go towards our goal of planting 1000 trees in 2020. All our plants are grown in our homemade compost soil mixture and without chemical pesticides or fertilizers. ***Volume up to hear their cute "chirps" and sounds*** We feel very lucky to have Squirrel Monkeys (Mono Titi) at Finca EcoVida. One troup has over 60 monkeys and this year we were very happy to see a lot of them with babies on their backs. They move so quickly and prefer to be high up in the trees away from people so we still aren't sure if they are the Black-crowned squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii oerstedii) or the Grey-crowned squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii citrinellus) but both have very small populations so we are happy they have a home at our farm. Our big tree planting project at Finca EcoVida in Las Mesas is going very well. Our team has planted over 400 trees so far this year so we have 600 left to reach our goal of 1000 fruit trees for 2020. This is the size of the cacao trees when we first plant them. This baby tree was planted by seed and spent its first 8 to 12 months in our greenhouse in Playa Bejuco before moving to the farm. This beautiful little waterfall and swimming hole is now only a 5 minute walk from our cabin at Finca EcoVida. This past year our farm team has been busy improving the path to make it more accessible. Before it was a 15 to 20 minute trek through some very muddy, overgrown areas and now it is a very easy walk. Very soon it will also have a ton of new fruit trees and flowers planted all around it. Our beautiful oak table made by Alex and Junior is finished and we couldn't be happier with it! It is our favourite peice of furniture at Finca EcoVida! These two brothers from Mastatal are very talented and we highly recommend them if you need any project done. We also replaced the sofas at our rental house in Bejuco so the old ones moved to the farm to complete our outdoor living room area. We love reusing, repurposing and giving new life to old things.
