Thanks to inheritance law and custom, farms in Galicia are subdivided among heirs, and over generations many have been reduced to tiny plots. Many of those are too small to support families, and thus Galicia has been a source of immigrants in the New World. A large fraction of Spanish heritage immigrants in Argentina, Cuba (including the Castro ancestors), and elsewhere in Latin America are Gallegos.

A few of the farmsteads close to the sea have been sold or rented in the vacation market.
