Theo was so caught up in his conversation over the phone, he did not notice the person beside him. “Look, I don’t care if Jesus came to Earth and told you that you had the right to do what you did, fix it before I get back tomorrow or the conversation will be a whole lot different.” He finalized before hold the elevator door for the other. “Going up?” @catalinastarter​

Eden didn't mean to eavesdrop the man's conversation but she also couldn't help it since he was talking so damn loud. However, some of the conversation did get a soft chuckle from her. She nodded when he asked if she was going up, stepping into the elevator and pressing the floor she was going to. "I think you would care if Jesus came to Earth with the sole mission of telling this Reynolds guy that he has the right to do something," she started, glancing his way. "Everyone would care if that happened and then whatever problem you have would be small compared to Jesus's arrival. I'm just stating the facts."

Eden was staring at her nails and making a mental note that she needed to book an appointment with the manicurist when the man started talking about urgent care. Truth to be told, Eden didn't listen to the first part so when she looked up and saw the man's arm she couldn't help but to blurt out a "Holy shit". She stared at it for a few seconds before blue eyes moved to glance at the person. "What the fuck happened to you?" Of course, Eden would ask for details instead of helping the poor man. "I think there's a hospital a few blocks away. I can call you a taxi." She figured the man wouldn't want to walk a few blocks with a broken arm.

Lizzie bit her lip, brows scrunching together — on one hand, there was something distinctly distasteful about Eden speaking about her adoptive parents in such a way; after all, they’d taken some goodness out of their hearts to take a child, willingly, into their home. On the other, Lizzie could relate deeply to the frustration with one’s parents, biological or not. Her inner rebel wanted to pat Eden on the back and say good for you! as if there was something to applaud in quitting her shitty retail job at her parents’ health food chain.

Swallowing, she watched her pull an orange juice out of the cooler, still in mild disbelief at what she’d just learned. “So let me get this straight — you’re telling me that you hated growing up rich and privileged and absolutely pampered by your parents?” It was unfair of Lizzie to say that, she knew, but she held her own arsenal of well, at least my parents hated me close to her heart.

She can see it in her eyes: the judgment. Eden could recognize that look anywhere, she's seen it many times over the years, especially when she talked about her family. It was so easy to come across as the ungrateful adopted daughter, and boy, did she know how to play that part but she also hated it for it made her realize how unfair she could be. She had never given her adoptive parents a chance and now it was too late to try.

Eden wanted to keep fooling herself into believing she was right, that everyone else was to blame, but with every passing second, she felt her confidence wavering. Her pulse was thrumming in her veins, but it was unacceptable for her questions to bother her, so she slipped into a saccharine smile. "What can I say? My biological mother is a bitch. Like mother, like daughter." There was a clear bitterness in her tone, one that not even her could conceal.

“Bringing coffee to bigger jerks,” replied Marion, the acerbity of her tone in sharp contrast to the lopsided smile forming in her features, betraying her inward amusement. “No, I’m a paralegal. Which sounds like a massively grown-up job, except business has been slow this January, so I’ve been relegated to glorified secretary for a while. I guess there aren’t enough tawdry affairs on this island to keep us—” and that’s when it hits her. The reason why the young woman had looked familiar in the first place — a case she’d handled not too long ago, albeit employed at a different firm at the time. It would not be professional to appear biased while handling legal matters, but, well, she’d sympathized with the other (Eden, if she remembers correctly) regardless. It takes her a moment to realize that she’d actually paused mid-sentence, her eyes having initially dawned in recognition and now, in fear of being found out. “—afloat.” She finished lamely, flashing the other a sheepish smile before following in the woman’s direction. She cast a sweeping glance to the tablets shelf, her hand brushing alongside. “This is brilliant, wow. I like the way you think. And if I’ve taken over his job, I’ll let you know.” Marion remarked with a smile that promised mischievousness, before grabbing an entire packet off the shelf, “I’m Marion, by the way. And you are…?” 

Her mouth displayed half of a smile but it started to fade when the other woman stopped mid-sentence. Was she having a stroke? She stared at her for a few seconds just to make sure that one side of her face was not drooping. She had read that somewhere but now she realized she wasn't entirely sure how would that look. Fortunately, and as the panic began to arise, the other woman spoke. "Yeaah... you chose the wrong town to become a paralegal," Eden replied before letting out a sigh she didn't even know she was holding. A semblance of a smile played on her lips now that the crisis had been averted. "You know I'll be rooting for you. I hope you take his job, the world already has too many assholes lawyers." She knew a thing or two about lawyers, the last time she spoke to one was when her ex-boyfriend's lawyer called her to ask her to declare that she had made up the whole affair with his client. She hung up and never heard of the man again. "Nice to meet you." And she meant that. She didn't like most people but maybe it was their shared love for revenge that made her likable. "I'm Eden."

There were many things Lizzie expected the girl to do, but walking over and quitting herself was certainly not one of them. Tacked on with the mysterious comment about her manager losing her job because of her parents —

Shit. Things clicked into place and Lizzie widened her eyes, stepping out after the woman. “You’re Eden? Eden Holiday?” She exclaimed, a look of incredulity crossing her face. She’d read about the Holidays in some lifestyle magazine she’d picked up at the doctor’s office — an old money sort of family that took their millionaire fortune and made billions of Green Tulips — or something like that. The details were rather fuzzy. They lived the earthy-crunchy lifestyle that Lizzie only dreamed of (if only she could give up french fries!), and on one of the splashy pages, it’d prominently featured a picturesque portrait of their family, a little girl with the exact sour expression the woman in front of her sported now. “Unbelievable,” Lizzie murmured to herself, observing the other with a furrowed brow. 

"Yes," she replied in a flat tone while a knot of discomfort twisted in her gut, "I'm that one." Despite hating being associated with the Holidays, Eden refused to allow the corners of her mouth to twitch. Most of the time she despised being reminded that she was part of that family, but then again, not many people recognized her parents except those who were into the same bullshit as them. That's why the expression on the other woman's face was so satisfactory to her. "Well, believe it because it's true." At this point, Eden glared at Karen and the woman didn't need a second warning to know she had to leave.

Acting as casual as she could manage, Eden reached out to one of the fridges to grab an orange juice, one of the few products in the store she enjoyed. "I know what you must be thinking. It makes no sense, right?" Opening the bottle, she slipped into a smile, "but we are not really related thank goodness. They wanted a kid and they were obviously bewitched by my charming personality so they adopted me." According to her mother, even as a baby, Eden was... difficult— for the lack of a better word.

Charlie couldn’t help but return the woman’s smile, eyes flicking from her to his interpreter, a soft chuckle escaping at her words as he looked back at her. “Don’t like working here, or just don’t like having your photo taken?” He signed, eyes moving over to the woman she indicated as his interpreter spoke to her. She would work just as well for the photos, he assumed, as long as she didn’t mind actually working with him. His eyes moved back to the interpreter and he shrugged as he turned back to the woman.

“I don’t know. Depends how long they take to decide what shots and how many they need,” he signed, before gesturing to where a few people looked to be talking over each other, each of them pointing to a different side of the store. “Store owners and news publishers tend to have very different ideas of what’s important.” He rolled his eyes, already sick of it. “Don’t get me wrong, on-scene photo shoots are great, as long as everyone’s on the same page. I don’t think they’re even in the same book.”

Blue eyes tried to understand what he was saying as he signed, but the few lessons she took of ASL were not enough for her to get the whole message, thus her eyes landed on the interpreter. "I don't mind to have my picture taken just not in this place. I guess that answers your other question." Eden didn't even try to conceal her dislike for the store. It wasn't really about the store but about what it represented, and of course, about the people who managed it: her parents.

"Well, then it looks like we're going to be here for a looong time," she drawled with a roll of her eyes. Eden couldn't even understand why the store needed a whole photoshoot but what annoyed her the most was that she had to stay here through the whole thing. "Is this your dream job? Photograph organic tomatoes and kombucha?" she asked with a soft chuckle, her gaze landing back on him. She couldn't imagine anything more uninspiring than kombucha. "Do you want to get a snack?" she asked the photographer and his interpreter, "not healthy snacks, but the kind that is full of sugar and calories."

Kendall made a hurt sort of expression. “Oh, God, don’t say that. I’ve already started groaning when I get up out of bed in the morning.” Like Blink-182 so cleverly put - no one likes you when you’re 23, and Kendall had a mind to think that Kendall shrugged, conceding her point. “Sure. I’m a drummer, so I guess I’m usually stuck behind that set. Whereas a singer or guitar player - they can do whatever they want.” She snorted at her excuse. “Yeah, same, that too. We’re saving everyone the trouble.”

"I think I've done that ever since I was a kid, so who knows? Maybe I've always been an old lady at heart," She laughed softly, shrugging her shoulders. "Ah! That makes sense, but I'm sure you have good rhythm, you know, given you are a drummer." Maybe her assumption was far away from the truth. "Exactly! And we are saving ourselves from the embarrassment. The last thing I want is to make a fool out of myself in front of all these people."

Charlie only grinned at the girl, knowing she looked familiar enough but not able to place from where, until she spoke. And then he found himself recognizing—as odd it sounded—the way her lips moved and formed the sharp response, reminiscent of the girl from the health food store he’d been photographing. “Because you never let me,” Charlie signed as he spoke. He stepped away from the stool he’d bene sitting on, waving to it in a silent offer for her to have a moment’s respite from what he assumed were very painful heels. “I’ll convince you to let me take a photo eventually,” he insisted, a teasing smile curling at his lips.

“Beautiful?” He offered as she declined the offer of a photo the way she looked. He pressed his lips together in an exaggerated kind of thoughtful expression and shook his head. “No, don’t know why anyone would want a picture of themselves looking as incredible as you do. Waste of time.”

"Maybe one day you will," she replied, making sure to put emphasis on the word 'maybe'. Eden didn't like to be photographed, she hated the whole process of having her picture taken and what she hated the most was the fake smiles. However, she'd seen some of the photos he had taken of the store and she had to admit that they were pretty good, as good as photos of organic food can be. So, yes, maybe one day she would let him take her photograph but tonight was not the day. "These shoes are killing me," she admitted before she mouthed a 'thank you' as she sat down.

At the compliment, Eden struggled to restrain from allowing her smile to turn into a smirk. "That's not it. I know I look good," she replied. When it came to self-confidence Eden had plenty to spare. "I just don't feel like myself dressed like this, you know?" It was hard to explain how someone wouldn't like to be dressed to nines like she was that evening, the dress was pretty enough to make anyone green with envy. "Are you going to work all night or are you also allowed to have some fun?"

Noah stared at her for a moment before he laughed, utterly delighted at her cheek. “Listen, ma’am, between you and me, I’m not satisfied with my night until a woman’s humiliated me at least three times,” he said playfully. “And I already know I’m pretty lousy at any technical dancing, so…I’m plenty ready for you to make cry.” He kept his hand extended between them, brows lifting hopefully. “Go on. Be cruel. Embarrass the shit out of me.”

"Will I be the first to humiliate you tonight or will I set the bar for the other two?" she asked,  the corners of her mouth tipped with a truly genuine smile. "Lucky me, then. I love making someone cry, especially on the dance floor." She wasn't also a technical dancer, although she had taken some lessons, Eden never committed to anything for a long time. Reinforcing her smile, she accepted the invitation and grabbed his hand.

LOCATION: Founder’s Day Ball

TIME: Evening

Eden had been struggling not to doze off with the conversation happening in her table. Whose idea was to sit her which such a dull group of people? While she didn't know exactly what time it was— not very smart of her to not bring a watch— she knew that it was still fairly early and so, she still had some time to kill before she was allowed to leave this place. Not able to hear more about this couple's kids, Eden stood up without excusing herself and headed to the dessert table. She didn't know much about Spanish cuisine, but the shape of one dessert caught her eye. Buñuelos de Viento. She had no damn idea what it was but it sure tasted good, she grabbed two more to take them back to the table, still with no intentions to interact with the people there. She turned around and it was at that moment she collided with someone, the buñuelos falling straight to the ground as she let out a frustrated groan. "Are you fuckin' kidding me? Can't you see where you go?" Eden blurted out, shaking her head. Truth to be told, it had been Eden's fault but that didn't mean she wasn't going to try to blame it on the other person.

Kendall stopped in her tracks to the bar, which was probably good, because she’d frequently been at that counter tonight. Kendall let herself lean back against the wall again as she smirked at her comments. “I’m maybe a year or two older than that song? The Backstreet Boys have always felt timeless, though.” 90s boy bands were definitely one of Kendall’s guilty pleasures, and had she not been nursing drinks all night, she wouldn’t have complimented them so freely. “Not usually. I make the music, I don’t dance to it. What’s your excuse?” She asked, leaning her head up against the wall and letting it roll slightly to look at her. 

Eden was more of a Britney Spears kind of gal, but she could acknowledge the cultural impact of The Backstreet Boys. "I guess after over 20 years they can now be considered classic, which makes me feel so old," she added with a chuckle before nodding to her next question. "You can make music and dance to it." What was her excuse? She really didn't have any. Dancing was a mood and she simply wasn't in the mood tonight. Still, she gave her an excuse, "these heels and the amount of alcohol I've ingested are not a safe combination on the dance floor."

“I thought it was more for the Eyes Wide Shut kinda vibe. Minus everything else about that movie, of course….” It was mean of Miles to compare this event to an orgy, but he couldn’t help it. He was cranky, mildly inebriated, and the music wasn’t good enough for him. “Honestly, a phone is a phone, and if they steal it, they steal it. Have fun trying to pawn off an iPhone 4, idiots.” Fiddling with his own glass, he shook his head. “No I don’t think so. Why? You need something?” 

"If that had been the case..." she started, shifting in her seat before continuing, "then this party is very dull and not perverted at all." Eden had watched the movie only once but it was the kind of movie that wasn't easy to forget. Her eyebrowed arched before a chuckle escaped past her glossy lips. "iPhone 4? They'd be doing you a favor if they were to steal it. Nothing against the classics but I'm surprised you are even able to use it." She shrugged, bringing the flute back to her lips. "A refill, that's what I need. I don't think I can get through this night without enough champagne in my system.

Kendall was an introvert, wholeheartedly. She needed extroverts with her at these kinds of events, to pull her out from her own head, but she was just going to have to rely on her good friend alcohol to do that for her. As she leaned against the wall, watching someone tear up the dancefloor to Britney Spears’ Toxic, she took a big sip of her drink and grimaced as it burned going down. She barely took a breath before finishing it, pushing up with her shoulder blades off the wall to head to the bar to get another one. 

Eden loved a good party, but she didn't like fancy events like this one. It made her feel out of her element and it also didn't help that she was sent here in representation of her parents. A quiet laugh escaped past her lips as she saw the man dancing his heart out to Toxic. That had been the highlight of her night and if she wasn't wearing high heels, she would have joined him. Eden clapped as the song ended and he left the dance floor to go and get a drink. "I think Britney would have been proud of that rendition," she said, glancing at the woman standing next to her. The first chords of the 1997 classic 'Everybody' started soon after. "Gosh, I'm pretty sure that song is as old as I am." She shook her head before taking a sip of her drink. "You don't dance?"

“Hey!” Whether they were wallflowering or just waiting for someone else to pay them mind, Noah didn’t much care. At a shindig like this, there was no damn reason to be just leaning against the wall like that. He understood, honestly he did - sometimes you just needed to people watch and find your footing before you got involved - but he was, as always, a loud and cheerful asshole, and he wasn’t gonna let anybody waste their night. “C’mon, you wanna stare at the floor all night, or do you wanna dance?” he teased, offering a hand.

Eden looked around just to make sure he wasn't talking to anyone else. She didn't mind dancing, she really didn't, but when she was forced to come to this event she didn't think about hitting the dance floor. "I don't think that's a good idea," she started with a coy smile, lowering her gaze before she added, "I'd hate to embarrass you because I'm one hell of a dancer." Eden shrugged as the smile playing on her lips grew wider.

It was only about halfway through his shift before the next photographer would take his place, and things had started to slow down a little. As was usually the case as these kind of events, the first hour and last hour would be the busiest. The time in between was mostly stragglers, of which there were surprisingly few at the Founder’s Day Ball, and the lightweights who were already drunk and dragging friends over for goofy photos. When it looked like they’d have a slight lull in the stream of people looking for physical memories of the night, Charlie sat on the stool he had against the wall for a quick break. His interpreter had run off to get a drink or something. Events like this, anywhere he was photographing people really, were the only times he had an interpreter with him. Besides the chaos of so many people being around, he was also looking at people through a small viewfinder, with a camera positioned about six feet away from them. It was far from the most ideal circumstances to try and lipread, so he typically didn’t bother to try.

He looked around when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye and started to stand, looking around for his interpreter. He still wasn’t back yet. Oh well. Charlie would have to manage alone for a few minutes. “Hey, looking for a photo?” Charlie signed as he spoke.

Normally at this point in an event of this type, Eden would have been thinking about her exit but this wasn't that kind of event. In fact, this event felt like a kidnap as she was here against her will and she had no way to communicate with the outside world, and of course, she couldn't just stand up and leave. The place was varnished in false smiles, everyone in town looking their best while hiding behind a mask. At least that was fitting, Eden thought. For most of the night, she had kept to the edges of the room, brushing past small groups of people while sipping champagne. Piercing blue eyes scanning the room in search of a waiter that could refill her flute. It was then that her gaze landed on a familiar face, at first she couldn't remember where she'd seen him before but then it hit her.

"Why do you always want to take my picture?" she asked, remembering that their first encounter happened at the store. Eden then took off the mask, a sigh of relief escaped past her lips as she didn't like wearing it. "No," she finally replied to his question as a small smile graced her features. "I don't want a photo of me looking like this," Eden admitted as she looked at the beautiful green dress but one that made her feel so uncomfortable.
