The library I'm working at is in a small town and I wouldn't necessarily say they are conservative, but they are not really used to queer stuff. For pride month I took a little table, put all queer books we had (and currently I'm buying a lot more) on it and decorated it with my pride flag. And no joke, the look on some teenagers (and some adults) faces... heartwarming 😭 Walked straight to the table and looked through the books. It makes me so happy.

Okay so I did this again for this year's pride month and today there was a boy who nearly made me cry... He was watching the pride table from afar for like 10 minutes before he slowly walked towards it and took a book with a gay couple on the cover. He had the book in his hands for like a solid minute and just looked at the cover. After a while I saw his mother approaching and was scared but the mother went to him and asked if he wanted to take the book home. They stood at the table for a very long time and he asked a lot of questions and she answered them very sweetly and it was just nice to see that some representative book covers can lead to an important talk like this because the boy was clearly discovering something important for him and idk why I'm typing all this it was just a very pure moment to witness

we're heading towards some record setting humidity this summer so JUST A REMINDER that if you're in any way prone to migraines, this weather is great at triggering them! Be EXTREMELY diligent about staying hydrated if you're going out, EVEN TO AN AIR CONDITIONED SPACE, and ESPECIALLY if you are drinking any alcohol at all! even a single glass of wine or a cocktail! You will feel fine for an hour or two but then you will NOT FEEL FINE. If you have a headache that isn't responding to painkillers and it gets noticeably worse when you move or change elevations (sitting to standing, not like, going to the mountains) then drink a full glass of water and go lie down in a cool, quiet, dark room until it passes! DO NOT LOOK AT A SCREEN UNTIL THE DANGER HAS PASSED. I know you're bored but it could be so much worse!

I see this is going around again! Happy Migraine Season everybody! Remember to keep a damp washcloth in your freezer so that if you feel the migraine coming on you can lay down and press it against your forehead and temples to give yourself a better chance of ducking it before it's too late!

Also a reminder that for some folks, big changes in air pressure can also be a migraine trigger. So if you’re in an area that, like mine, is having a lot of really wild temperature swings (ie multiple very hot days that end abruptly with storms at which point it cools down a lot), might be a good idea to have your migraine remedies locked and loaded, because with migraines the sooner you intervene, the more likely it is you’ll avert the worst symptoms (and will need less medication to do so).

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

so inspired by my artist date today that i want to write a sci-fi book !!!

went to a queer hopepunk workshop as part of a local pride festival this weekend. we imagined that we time-travelled to 2040 on the best possible timeline - what would our city look like?

i made some pipe cleaner wind turbines to replace the offshore oil rigs in the sea, and drew some rooftop solar and repair shops! i have so many questions about building a better future that i want to explore, becky-chambers-style

also the person running the workshop wants to start a hopepunk art collective and create a hopepunk art exhibition!! so i might join an art collective which would be a dream come true!!

you don’t realize how important lunch is until you’re wandering around thinking about how unloveable and untalented and uniquely cursed you are and then it’s 4pm and you finally eat lunch and you go Oh. oh right.

I just watched a video about students getting their papers falsely flagged for using AI, even when they didn’t, and the advice was things like, “Leave in incorrect grammar,” “If you’re quoting something, don’t copy and paste it, type it out manually because it leaves a metadata trail that you used the copy/paste function and that's a flag,” “Write in the cloud so there’s a version history,” and the one that really got me, “if you find you write in a manner that can sounds too robotic or professional and it gets flagged, go to the writing center so a writing tutor can help you sound more humanly flawed,” and like what the actual fuck.

Like I get that is practical advice, but people should not have to fucking do that. They should not have to train themselves around not sounding like AI, when AI only sounds like that BECAUSE it was trained on them.

I spent so much of my life learning how to write, I shouldn't have to unlearn that because some computer algorithm learned from me.

by default i dont understand people with boobs who argue against freeing the nipple and think top nudity is shameful. but ESPECIALLY i dont understand it when you live somewhere where temperatures can exceed like 80F. youre telling me you havent ever wished it was socially acceptable to walk downtown with your tits out when its hot outside. youre just okay with having to wear shirts in all weather and this doesnt bother you. i simply do not believe you............

if you find yourself wanting to shave before having your body seen by other people (going swimming, wearing something revealing, seeing a partner, etc.) then i think that's a good indicator that shaving isn't actually just your personal choice and is most likely the result of societal pressure

hey so in case you missed it: amazon stopped 'supporting' kindles made before 2012 to try and force us to buy their shittier-made products that they can force obsolescence on.

that means that both my kindle and my partner's effectively broke overnight with no compensation. and we can't use libby to borrow ebooks from the library anymore (I don't like reading on my phone, it gives me migraines)

so anyway, fuck Jeff Bezos, fuck amazon, fuck forced obsolescence and fuck enshittification.
