Syed Tareq Rahman “Wheel man”, iron, jute, resin and wheel Exhibited at ONLY CONNECT.EDITION ONE, at Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct, September 2014 When first given the opportunity to make work according to his own inspiration - a Master’s student at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka - Tareq was drawn to the idea of working on a subject that is close to his heart. His series of works on urban existence are one of the outcomes of that fascination. His counterpart and fellow participant in Edtion One Emran Sohel points out the synergy, in the exhibition between Tareq’s chosen materials (e.g. iron wire, ball-bearings, resin, jute dust); the display and the subject of the series. Viewing the work from a more formal perspective, Pervaj Hasan - another of the artists in the show - was interested by the almost, drawing-like quality of the sculptural forms.

EDITION ONE in the news
This post was originally published in the New Age newspaper on September 29, 2014 under the title, "Five Artists unveil their creative inspiration". Five artists—three painters, a photographer and a sculptor- are demonstrating their artistic talent at a two-week group art exhibition titled ‘Only Connect. Edition One’ at the Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct at Farmgate in the capital. A number of 34 paintings, photographs and sculptures by painters Emran Sohel, Manik Bonik and Mohammad Parvez Hasan, sculptor Syed Tareq Rahman and photographer Arfun Ahmed are on display at the exhibition. Diverse themes have been addressed and beautifully brought up in the works. To speak of particular works, Syed Tareq Rahman’s sculpture, done in metal wires, depicts a rickshaw carrying few people. Photographer Arfun Ahmed has captured a fisherman fishing at Indrawati, a river located in Northeastern Nepal.
Painter Emran Sohel has depicted geometrical figures resembling an urban area in his mixed media painting at the exhibition.
Parvez Hasan, on the other hand, has dealt with human body in his oil paintings depicting naked male bodies entangled with one another in a manner that it becomes almost impossible for the viewers to separate one body from another. Trees have appeared as the theme in Manik Bonik’s acrylic paintings revealing large branches and trunk of trees.
The participating artistes also shared the stories behind their creative inspiration at a discussion session at the Bengal Shilpalaya at Dhanmondi, held in the capital on last Wednesday.
Noted artists including Biren Shome, Wakilur Rahman, Shaheed Kabir and others also attended the programme. Arfun Ahmed, who is a photography teacher of Pathshala: The South Asian Media Institute, and showcasing a series of photographs on river Indrawati at the exhibition, said, ‘My main concern was how to tell a story with images of Indrawati, a river located in Northeastern Nepal. The images also needed to convey the stories of the fishermen, whose livelihoods are dependent on the river,’ said Ahmed.
Emran Sohel, who has done his MFA from Viswa Bharati University in Santiniketan, attempted to present the architecture of Dhaka city in his artworks. ‘In my opinion, architecture represents forms and structures that can strongly influence people in different ways. I always try to bring in a new way of looking at familiar things,’ added Sohel.
Trees, on the other hand, have become prominently present in the paintings of Manik Bonik, who is a graduate from Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Dhaka. ‘I use my canvases to relay the magnificence of a tree, which is, to me, an embodiment of freedom and strength,’ shared Bonik, who also conveyed that trees have always given him artistic nudges.
Painter Parvez Hasan, shared that he has addressed the dejections, torments and oppressions of human life in his paintings. Sculptor Syed Tareq Rahman mentioned that he tries to analyse the similarities and dissimilarities between natural and mechanical entities in his experimental works. ‘I believe that the industrial revolution brought substantial changes in every aspect of life and I want to capture the changes in my sculptures,’ told Tareq. - See more at: http://newagebd.net/53466/five-artists-unveil-their-creative-inspiration/#sthash.ERRQjEHO.dpuf

Arfun Ahmed Indrawati River Story Exhibited at ONLY CONNECT.EDITION ONE, at Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct, September 2014
It was easy for me to get access to them, but extremely difficult to build a narrative. I was thinking, “how could I tell a story with images of the river Indrawati, a river in northeastern Nepal & an ethnic group of majhi (fishermen)"? There are over 27 mining plants on the bank of the Indrawati that use heavy equipment to extract material such as crushed stones and sand from the riverbed; because of this, fish & other marine life are on the verge of vanishing from the river. Majhis, who once lived by catching & selling fish, are leaving their centuries-old occupation & taking work as day-labourers in the river mining plants.
I went there without knowing where to stay, or eat. The people were very kind to me. They gave me shelter & food, even though some of them were extremely poor. I remember Sujan Majhi, a 22 year old daily labourer in a river-mine & father of 2 kids, saying to me one starry night, “when you go back you can tell the story, that you have stayed in Sujan Majhi’s house, from where you can see the langtang himal through the window”. or the night in Sipaborgaw, when i was woken by the sound of a chorus of young ladies & boys who were singing & dancing with ancient sprits. I wondered how these people were celebrating their lives without fear of uncertainty. I tried to photograph this uncertainty of their lives, to photograph the restlessness of their lives - which dissolves into their blood, like nicotine. & yes! their love of life.
