edmund-anjouâ:
Edmundâs eyes widen underneath the helmet as the knight tumbles down. Losing his footing, he hears the gasps in the stands. His sword pointed at the chest of the knight, watching as the helmet comes off from the impact. He stands defensive ready for the Black Knight to be furious. Instead he sees a very familiar face.
âSam!â
He stands there just amazed, realizing that Sam was the one who defeated all the other knights that fought. He steps back for a moment, looking up at the royal seating and seeing his majesty. He gives a bow to him and then walks up to Sam and extends his hand.
âYou need a hand up your highness?â
The King wore a look of deep disappointment where he stood, staring at the two competitors. But Samâs smile proved he didnât much care about that.Â
Sam accepted Edmundâs offer to pull him up and once he was on his feet he gave a dramatic bow to the stands. Now the audience finally had a chance to understand what was going on, they were abuzz with life.Â
It was like something taken straight from the fairytales. Some cynics noted that perhaps that was exactly why heâd done it. But Caira, along with many others, saw a seventeen year old man looking to be a part of his own nameday celebrations.Â
Raising a hand to hush the crowds, the King made a gesture to the announcer.Â
âKnight Edmund of Feladean defeatedâŠâ There was a moment of hesitation as the announcer tried to figure out what to declare. âPrince Samouel Fielding, fighting on behalf of the Black Knight, Duke Edwin Black.âÂ
The stands grumbled with discontent, their bias for the Prince shining through. Samâs smile fell when he realised that if they had their way, a victorious competitor would always lose to him.Â
âThe final meet shall take place tonight. Apolloâs Champion, Knight Edmund of Feladean against Artemisâ Champion, Knight Orion of Chiswick,â the announcer said, trying to make his voice carry over the stands.Â
Caira glanced around, unsure why it hurt to hear the bias the sycophants seemed to hold. Werenât they happy that Edmund won fairly? Would they rather the Prince to win just because of his name?Â
Sam felt a deep, sinking feeling as the crowds didnât seem to quieten. They would have him win, unfairly. Turning to Edmund, he grabbed Edmund into a warm handshake and clapped his back. âIâm proud to have lost to you. And I canât wait to watch you win in my name.âÂ
Edmund looks up at the stands, expecting to hear cheers but there are none. The only one clapping his his brother who looks with pride and then settles down when he sees no one else clapping. He looks down, feeling like his victory meant nothing after all. He pulls off his helmet, his dark curls full of sweat and he smiles finally when he feels Sam give him a warm handshake.
âIt was a great match, you are an excellent fighter my friend. I shall do my best to claim victory in your name.â
He smiles wide at his friend, happy to see that at least Sam is proud of him and his victory. Hopefully the people will have more appreciation for him tonight when he fights against Knight Orion. His eyes glance back up at the stands, he gives a bow to the Royal box and then a bow to his brother and Caira. His eyes never leaving her as he bows. Wishing she was his wife right now, how he would love to rub into her embrace after the duel.
âYou know, I believe there is a big banquet with plenty of food calling our names.â
Edmund adds as he looks back at Sam, a smirk on his face as he thinks of all the delicious food and wine there will be there.
