Headcannon:

Deabstraction is possible, but the person has to come to terms with the reality of their situation, whether that is coming to terms with their new home or identity, etc.

Jax comes back after coming to terms that he feels more comfortable being she. Thus begins a journey of self acceptance and the messy reality of dealing with identity, expression, and the likes.
