while im on the topic i really wanna see more fanworks playing with the idea that gensokyo is home to species that are extinct in the real world. in this excerpt from CoLA reimu is apparently (according to touhou wiki translation notes, at least) referring to the honshu wolf (canis lupus hodophilax), a subspecies of wolf that was driven to extinction by extermination efforts beginning around 1740 in response to rabies being brought over from china/korea. i think a really interesting take on gensokyo is that it's fundamentally one big nature reserve
