Commision work for a couples 1 year anniversary
Back to basics now that uni is over
Pre-production artwork for a music video that I worked on
Some observational drawing of the classic skull.
Reminds me of good old Cecil =(
Time to start posting again!
Just a quick sketch of a family for an assessment
My first Animation Reel 2017. Enjoy!
Music: Vulfpeck - Cory Wong
Such a great model we had today for life drawing.
My first attempt at the 11 Second Club. I entered the October competition but wasn’t able to complete the animation. I do plan on cleaning it up and adding some colour to it though! Hopefully in the coming months.
Sorry for the lack of content on here. I’ve been busy with uni work + I decided to separate my uni blog from my personal one here. Here’s a proof of concept shot for an idea I created. It’s about a magpie who suffers from amnesia and finds himself being chased by Poligeons (Pigeon police). Lost and confused, he finds himself joining a group of underground puffins who are trying to bring down a corrupt government and to right injustice.
Progress Report: Week 3 (3/10/16 - 7/10/16)
Animation: I started working on the October ‘11 second club’. I decided to use one of my characters from my past project, Craig (I finally get to use him!!!) as well as a newly designed one, Luke. He’s a skinny, geek-like character which adds a bit of contrast with Craig.
Life drawing: Our instructor wasn’t here this week, so one of our lecturer, Derek, took his place. He got us to do some quick sketches, analyse negative and positive space and some action poses.
Pre-Production: Three cards were given to us this week. Each represents a character, setting and theme. I was given BIRDS, USSR & DETECTIVE SERIES. From these three cards, in addition to the art style that was given to us last week, we have to generate an idea for an animation and to pitch it to the tutors in week 5.
I’m pretty stoked with the cards I was given except for USSR. My historical knowledge is pretty horrible so I’ll definitely need to do some research in this area.
Animation Technology: We have to individually research and choose an article about an animation technology and to summarise it into 250 words. I looked at the article about Gary the Gull, a VR game that truly interacts with the players and how it might be the future of VR. It’s really quite an interesting topic, especially how it can immerse and empower the players to take the story into any direction they want. Very much like the Telltale games but with more emotional engagement.
26 Sep - 30 Sep
Third-Year Pitch: Attended an event where third-year animators had to pitch their ideas for their final year film. This was in front of a panel who decides which project will get the green light. For the student, we had to decide on which projects we want to work on. Fortunately, the three that I had my eyes set on all got the thumbs up. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if I’m going to kill myself by working on all three projects... I guess we’ll see how I fair. Pre-Production: We were given an art movement where we had to find an artwork from that period to replicate. I was given the Dada movement. No idea what that was at the time but I decided to replicate The Elephant Celebes by Max Ernst. Once I finished my replica I discovered that it was actually from the Surrealist period...which in a way is kinda similar to Dadaism so I hope what I did was okay.
They will tell us why we’re doing this in week 3 so stay tuned. Life drawings: Back to drawing more academic-like life drawings. My instructor told me that it's not academic and that it’s more about observing the shape/anatomy... or something along those lines.
I would have preferred for more soulful life drawing classes where it's more about the emotion, feeling and idea. Like that of Walt Stanchfield, Tom Gately, Matt Jones, Alex Woo and Louis Gonzales. Oh well, I guess there’s Schoolism or the Drawn to Life book to learn from.
16 Sept 2016 - Animator and director Anthony Farquhar-Smith (Key animator for Fantastic Mr. Fox) came to talk to us about his work in the industry as well as giving us his top 10 tips on becoming a stop-motion animator.
During his talk, he also showed us a snippet of a film called Flatworld by Daniel Greaves. It has such great animation. I love the idea of using cardboard cutouts that move with 2d animated fluidity. I then found out that Greaves won himself an Oscar for the animated short Manipulation (which, surprise, surprise, was also really awesome). I definitely recommend checking him out if you haven’t already.
19 Sept 2016 - The first day of uni and we’re already given an assessment that’s due in four days. They call it a Rush Job. We were basically put into groups of 10 (6 animators and 4 film student) and we have to produce an animatic advertisement for an amazon-like company. A quick rundown of what we did: Day1: We worked together to come up with an idea for the advertisement. We then allocated jobs for each other and discussed what we’ll do for the next few days. I was lucky enough to work on pre-production art, storyboarding and animatic.
Day2: We meet up at Beerwolf Book Bar to share some of the things we did the night before. We also finalised character design and started working on storyboard/animatics. Day 3: We continued working on storyboard/animatics while the film students started working on sound, presentation and behind the scenes stuff.
Day 4: We managed to finish everything with 1/2hr to spare.
Overall, the group did an awesome job with the exception of one or two people but that’s to be expected in group work. Great collaboration, hard working people and a beautiful outcome. I couldn’t have asked for a better team.
Freshers Week (12 Sep - 18 Sep) aka Orientation Week for us Aussies. Meet a bunch of people, attended heaps of taster sessions for societies and clubs (there’s soooooo many, you can pretty much name anything and they’ll have it) and chilled out around town with my flatmates. The drawing above was one of the fancier looking pubs I went to around Falmouth.
My tagging system is a bit weird because I need to keep my blog up-to-date for an assessment. This just makes things a lot easier to organise later down the track when I need to compile everything together.
Alright! Now that I’m somewhat settled into my new home, its time to do a bit more posting on here. For those who don’t know, I’m currently on an exchange program in the UK! It was nearly a 30hr travel but luckily I had some breaks inbetween...although I wasn’t able to get much sleep :\
