Professional Organizations!
These are some of the professional organizations that I have found. I feel the one that would be most beneficial to me is LEA. It is a local group, and I hope to be teaching for LPS. It was also fun to find out that I know some of the Board of Directors. First is Jenni Absalon, she used to teach at my elementary school and she is the President. Next is Linda Freye who is the At-Large Rep. She was my favorite teacher who taught me in Kindergarten. Next comes Marge Keep, she is the Senior High Rep, who was my culinary skills teacher in High School.

What I Learned...Tech Edge 2012
There are so many things that were going through my head when I saw that we were going to the Tech Edge conference. I just thought it was fun that I got to see my mom present for the first time! I went to the keynote, all three presenters, and the closing session.
The first session I attended was on SMART boards. It was very interesting to learn about, but I feel like as being so early in my career that it would be hard to retain the information, but also there will be so much more technology with SMART boards, that most of the process will probably be irrelevant. I really did enjoy seeing that he was just a teacher, he even said he had no idea how he got the spot to present. Which reassured me that anyone is able to succeed.
The second session I attended was my mom's livebinders. I have to admit I was more distracted during the presentation because my dad kept texting me asking how she was doing. It was also hard I was looking more at what she was doing with her hand to comment later when she asked how her body movement was. I feel like as of now I would probably not use livebinders. But as I develop my future curriculum I see where it could come in handy.
The last session I went to was Web 2.0. I think this was one of my favorite sessions. It was something that I could use during my student career and teaching career. It would help out in so many ways. From showing us Glogster, Voki, Wordle, and talking QR codes. It was very interesting and I just wanted to hear him keep talking about different sites that I can use now and in my future! It was a great experience being being in his seminar.
I am so glad that I had the experience to go to my first Tech Conference!
Declaration of Independence Wordle
Can even change the layout and colors of the words!
Starting a new lesson? Have to look at a lot of boring documents? Copy and paste the document into Wordle and it will find the main points of your document to seek out what to look for!
A great way to teach elementary students about Math and Language arts. All in a fun way the kids may not even know that they are learning!
Putting QR Codes on the back of books to let your students what the book is about in a scentence or so
The Digital Divide!
In plain and simple terms the Digital Divide is a gap that appears when some people/students have access to the internet and the others who do not.
There are many things that teachers are able to do, to decrease the the divide. There are many times where there are computer labs in the library or around the school. Set up a time and make sure that everyone will have a sufficient amount of time to work on the assignment given. It is also important to let your students explore themselves, create a time where they are able to explore, nothing would be "wrong" but through this experience everyone would get the flow and be able to next time be confident with their computer skills, especially when you are only in elementary school.
For the future of the Digital Divide, especially in elementary school, I think the divide will see a drastic shift that there will not be as big as a gap. It is apparent that technology and computers are not going away any time soon. And kids now are growing up where everything is technology. Everything is on a blu-ray disc, not just a regular DVD, will they even know what a VHS tape is? So even if the family does not have money for their own computer, there will be one around that the child can explore on which will make it so there is not as much of a divide.
Positives of Learning Styles!
I believe it is very important to use Learning styles in the classroom. I am so used to hearing everything in different ways until the point is in the child’s mind, and can think about it in different ways. While it is also important to know as a teacher what is the best way to make your students comprehend a concept. For example, in science you can talk about the subject matter all you want, but do you really know if the students are listening and actually engaging in the material? But when you put the experiment in front of the child, you can tell if they are comprehending the subject. And for elementary it is very helpful to be having the students have activities to do, being more visual and hands on so they will want to be involved. It is also hard to see in my eyes the difference between learning and teaching styles. I feel that being a teacher, I would want to go in every direction of different ways to learn because that is how it was when I was growing up. I needed that extra support to make sure that I could grasp the concept confidently. For example, let’s say that we are in a History lesson, from the eight learning styles in Gardner’s theory it would go something like this:
Interpersonal- have someone dress up, have the students ask questions to the character asking who they are and what they did. This would be great because the student has the ability to understand people, so it may not seem like they are learning, just having a conversation with a historical figure.
Intrapersonal- Have the students become the historical figure. Have them research and know who “they are.” Once they become the character they would know one's interests and goals.
Linguistic- This could go along with the intrapersonal skills, once the student knows who they are, have the student practice a script, then once memorized have a pop culture night for them to share who they are.
Logical- Have the student compare two figures, maybe one from the past and one in the present, or both from the past, your choice. What are the similarities? What are the differences? Lastly what can you infer from comparing the two? If they are from two different periods of time is there a big difference? You could find so much out from the personalities of the figure, to even the characteristics of what they look like.
Naturalist- Let’s say we are on the Oregon trail. What would it be like? What artifacts would you see on the way? Record a journal of what the journey would be like.
Spatial- Going back to a historical figure. Have pictures of what the person looks like, what are the surroundings of the figure? What food does he eat, where does he live? Or for the science project show them what is going on, like with reactions and putting a mentos in a bottle of coke.
Bodily-Kinesthetic- I know it was always hard for me to remember who all the Greek gods and goddesses were. When we did have to learn the names and who they were our teachers made up a song and dance of who each of them were. To this day I still remember most of them. ( over 5 years ago)
Musical- It was the hardest thing for my third graders to remember some of their multiplication rules. It was so easy when we found songs that went along with the rules to their problems. It is a tune that could get stuck in your head and they would remember it for the next time test.
As I can hope you see there are many different options of how to learn, as it may go along with teaching styles, if you do even a few of these techniques, everyone has a fair chance to succeed in their future learning career!
"The Flipped Classroom!"
"The flipped classroom is a model of teaching in which a student’s homework is the traditional lecture viewed outside of class on a vodcast. Then class time is spent on inquiry-based learning which would include what would traditionally be viewed as a student’s homework assignment. Synonymous with Reverse Classroom."
Definition!
There are many positives to using this method. It will show who actually took the time to watch the vodcast when it is assigned outside of the classroom. It will make a more productive classroom, where they have learned the basic lessons of the lesson. Then going further on you can answer questions, ask questions and see how this would work in your own classroom.
For me personally wanting to do younger elementary education, I feel like this would be more of a bother then a plus. First of all they have trouble focusing and having an assignment where they just have to look at the computer I feel like we would be going over the same thing over again. But for older kiddo's in the classroom, I feel it would be an excellent idea.
