I went into this film only knowing Shai LaBeouf wrote the screen play during rehab, and was acting a character based off his abusive father. Man I was blown away. Honey Boy explores the problematic sides of being a child actor, all whilst dealing with a toxic dad who’s dependent on Otis’s (The main actor’s) pay-cheques.  

The stylistic choice of amazing editing and cinematography reflects it’s ‘reliving’ nature, that this story is traumatic and distant. Overall Honey Boy carries itself with a memory like quality. There are few (5 at most) different sets, and all the scenes seemingly blend into one. However, the downside to this is that the narrative structure is very one note, there’s rarely any major climax and is a steady tone (surprisingly) although intentionally I believe.  

Since the movie is surrealist, based off LaBeouf’s experience, each character feels real (Also every actor/actress brought their A+ game, the shee acting alone is a good enough reason to watch this film). How they portrayed the abusive dad was taken with such care and realism that it broke me down. The father was a caricature, or satirised, often times they’ll pair scenes where Otis is enjoying the company of his father juxtaposition to the clear abusive. This establishes the narrative Otis’s perspective of inner conflict of desperately needing for a father figuring and understanding his dad is bad for him. 

This movie got me. I cried pretty much throughout entire film.
