Psychologists have been discussing the connection between nature and nurture for years, as well as the importance of these factors on the person’s ability to achieve goals in life. However, nobody ever came up to the widely accepted conclusion. Same goes for the question about a good sales person. Is he/she made or born? From my point of view, claiming that a successful sales person is made means claiming that basically all people could be successful in sales, which I strongly believe is not true. Thus I tend to agree with those who say it’s the nature rather than nurture that matters. Think about all the people that you know. Do you agree that each of them could become a very successful sales person, if received some kind of training?
There are specific personal traits that each good sales person has. These include empathy, optimism, accuracy, self-confidence, and many more. (Source) Moreover, a person needs to be enthusiastic, determined, ambitious, persuasive, as well as have excellent communication skills. Indeed many of these can be trained. However, I think all good sales people are born enthusiastic and determined, something what you cannot really learn, and what indeed makes one to pursue a perfection in the rest of the mentioned skills.
I stick to my view that if one is thinking about becoming a great salesperson, one should already be great at a number of other, mostly inborn things that would indicate a large amount of success. From that point, the technical part of sales can be trained and other important skills developed.
