Sundowners in the clock tower
Delicious tapas at Bonatz Bar
Who would’ve thought the clock tower in the main station in Stuttgart had a little bar and restaurant with a stunning view of Stuttgart! I was pleasantly surprised when a friend suggested we go there for sundowners.
To access Botany you need to make your way to the tower, which is located on far side of the main station and then catch the elevator to the eighth floor. We were fortunate enough to get two comfy sofa chairs in the lounge, next to a window with a lovely view over the Königstrasse and the south of Stuttgart. A Pims Cup and tapas were the order of the day. The Pims Cup was good, and would have been even better with a few pieces of cucumber and apple in it. It was definitely a good choice for a hot summer’s day, as was the plate of tapas. It was a generous serving of tapas ranging from slices of mozzarella and tomato, slices of grilled aubergine, to melon with Parma ham – delicious!
The Bonatz bar is named after the architect Paul Bonatz, who’s works include the city hall in Hannover, the University Library in Thübingen, as well as the opera house in Ankara. The 56 meter high tower of the main station in Stuttgart was completed in 1916, forming the end of the Königstrasse, one of the busiest shopping boulevards in Germany.
Today the tower houses Bonatz, an information centre for the Stuttgart 21 project, as well as a branch of the registrar’s office for romantically inclined couples wanting to tie the knot.
Bonatz is a great place to relax with a drink at the end of a day. If the tapas is anything to go by, then the food in the restaurant must be good, something I hope to try soon myself. I must just remember to reserve a table before going (0711-411 05 280) – I’m told it’s a rather popular spot in town.
