As expected for one of Korea’s most entrancing alternative pop stars, Yves NAILs it on her fourth EP. The LOONA alum keeps refining the experimental but accessible alt-pop that’s become her signature. Opener “It” softly welcomes you in as she examines her personal ascent (“How many more times are they gonna call my name? / Nothing will stay the same / Now leave it all behind, higher, higher, higher up”) as part of the album’s larger death-to-rebirth arc. From there NAIL keeps shifting languages and registers, sliding from an all-English opener into the hypnotic deep house of “HALO” and the bilingual sprawl beyond, with Yves straddling the line as one of K-pop’s most exciting provocateurs. Producer ioah shapes all five tracks, and her collaborators — Lolo Zouaï on the hip-hop-leaning title cut, Lexie Liu on the hyperpop rush “Break It” — are every bit as willing to get weird. Writing on nearly everything and serving as sole lyricist on both bookend cuts, Yves proves she’s steering her work from start to finish. – J.B.
