Residential: How to Design HDMI Systems that Work
Dave Pedigo, CEDIA Senior Director of Technology, offered quick tips on successful HDMI distribution. Learn more in the CEDIA University course, Designing HDMI Distribution Systems That Work, at EHX 2012, Saturday, March 17 from 8:00am – 12:00pm (CEU value: 2).
1. Test Your HDMI System from the Start
“Although touted as one cable, one solution, taking HDMI beyond a simple single room, single source can get difficult quickly,” said Pedigo. “If an HDMI distribution system is not designed correctly, it can become very expensive to go back to troubleshoot and repair. So it is critical to design and test the system properly the first time.”
2. Avoid Getting In Over Your Head
“If an integrator doesn’t know what they are doing, it is very simple to get in over their head and design a system that does not work properly or even at all,” said Pedigo.
3. Learn from Real-Life Examples
“An example of designing a system that is destined to fail would be including a device that has multiple displays and only one key within the EDID,” said Pedigo. “Take simple steps during the design phase, including testing the source devices EDID with a proper test device.”
Access to CEDIA University courses and all training sessions is included when you register for the EHX Full Conference Pass.

Security: Far from Stable and Sleepy
From SMB to enterprise, integrators can benefit from Unified Communications (UC). Profit from making communication more efficient for your customers. Do you have a strategy? Read more.
By John Galante
Security is arguably the oldest and most mature of the various electronic systems categories. So you’d expect it to be stable and sleepy. No way!
New remote/mobile device control platforms from companies like Honeywell (Total Connect) and alarm.com through panel manufacturers 2Gig and Interlogix are driving consumer and business interest in security like never before and increasing the appeal of video surveillance and door control for residential and commercial integrators of all sorts. At the same time, more and more integrator are catching on to the RMR business model so closely attached to the security category and looking to master it through greater involvement.
Table 1 shows how strongly integrators are involved with video surveillance. It’s about video cameras working and home and building management systems to check up on home-alone kids and pets on delivery and service people and on the staff at businesses as much as it is about video for security purposes. And the new remote door control technologies are part of the trend, too. Again, it’s not just security; it’s about control and management of the home or business.

Are Your Clients Protected?
Each week the industry experts at CompTIA will provide a glimpse into their educational conference sessions offered at EHX 2012. This week, Lien-Anh Van Wagener, Senior Director of Events & Education, takes a look at the Quick Start Session on IT Security, taking place Friday, March 16 from 10:00am - 11:00am at EHX.
1. Why is it important for an integrator to understand IT Security?
"Organizations have to comply with both federal and state laws that protect sensitive data, and they have to be able to articulate the necessity of security solutions to their partners and clients. Security touches every business now, and those that deal with medical records, financial information, or legal documents are under the most scrutiny for security compliance and biggest risk for hacking."
2. What’s new and exciting in your field of expertise?
"The Cloud and social media booms have catapulted security to the forefront. Securing virtual environments are not only necessary but also very challenging, so it’s important to do it right. Becoming a trusted advisor in security can ensure long-term success and growth for your company."
3. What are the pitfalls if an integrator doesn’t fully know IT Security?
"If Security isn’t done correctly, it not only disrupts business as usual, but it can destroy your credibility, put innocent people at risk for identity theft, and open you up to a variety of lawsuits."
4. Can you give a real life in the field scenario regarding IT Security?
"In April 2011, a large online entertainment company experienced an Internet security breach that robbed up to 77 million accounts of personal information and credit card numbers. It caused an outrage for customers around the world that trusted such a large, global company. Many customers were so fed up that they had no problem transferring to that company’s competitors. Regardless of how hard you try, it is very hard, if not impossible, to regain customer trust once it is compromised."
5. Can you debunk any myths?
"Never think you have done enough. Hackers work 24/7, so you should have that kind of coverage for your business and for your customers as well."
