Haunted by the Past
I had a thought while re-watching the fight between Lotor and Zarkon in “Blood Duel”, probably my fav episode, about what Lotor is thinking about towards the end of the fight.
We know that he is fighting for his very survival (Zarkon has every intent of killing him) but towards the end it becomes about not just his own life.
Lotor sees Zarkon turn the Black Bayard on the approaching Paladins and reacts with:
Now, we see him get visibly and audibly upset at the prospect of Zarkon killing them (while I think the Paladins in their Lions would survive, those in the shuttle would not) and he intercedes, thus saving their lives.
My thought was this: was he just thinking about the lives of his current, tentative allies or was he also thinking about ones in the past? Specifically I’m talking about those on the planet that he befriended that Zarkon destroyed when Lotor refused to.
Lotor couldn’t help those people. He couldn’t stop his father. And you know Zarkon probably made Lotor watch as he murdered them all.
But this time…he stopped him.
Look at this face:
I can’t begin to touch on what he’s going through emotionally in regards to killing is father, even though Lotor knows Zarkon was a monster, but I can also see this as almost a sad relief.
Like he had been carrying this around with him for centuries and it was probably eating him up inside and here, finally he was able to stop him. And while it was too late to save that planet and all the people on it, he ensured that Zarkon would never be able to do it again.
VICTORY!!

My headcanon is that Daibazaal’s climate was overwhelmingly open, flat desert and savanna- very arid, prone to dust storms, sweltering heat in daytime and frigid cold at night. Out of this, I imagine the early galra, or protogalra ancestors, were similar to hyenas- sprinting pack hunters that ran down their prey and lived communally in burrows and dens, and sleeping together was a big thing because of conserving body heat.
I also have the headcanon that galra are almost never single births- they’re usually born in litters of two to five. The exception to this are half-galra who are incubated by their non-galra parent, if the other side of their heritage is more prone to single births.
As a result, baby galra have a very specific distress reflex- they have to be snuggled up against a parent or sibling (or just, anything with body heat) or they’ll get upset and cry- it’s an instinct left over from burrow-dwelling ancestors where a baby that isn’t close to either a peer or caretaking adult is out where the brutally cold nights or various predators can get at them.
Normal, psychologically healthy galra grow out of this impulse gradually- though until about puberty, galra kids tend to be super grabby/cuddly/prone to being all up in other people’s space- but being isolated from physical contact or not handled enough at early ages can have enduring psychological effects that mean this distress instinct isn’t… processed properly. (A common workaround in the case of orphaned or otherwise stranded baby galra that don’t have siblings to sleep with is basically cuddle-able heating packs)
Basically the idea is Keith is not just kind of affection-starved in general, he has a very specifically galra form of touch starvation and interpersonal neediness born from being weaned off high levels of physical contact way too hard, way too early and the Blade is all a little stressed when they catch Keith outputting some pretty textbook signs of that (sleeps irregularly, heightened emotional sensitivity, especially to perceived rejections…)
Complicating this, most adult galra in the imperial fleet are fairly touch-starved because Zarkon’s fostered a culture of rigid elitism that discourages casual intimacy on the grounds that you shouldn’t be touched by your “inferiors”, and there’s also an attitude of, because baby galra need such high levels of physical contact for optimal health, touch starvation/skin hunger are viewed as “childish” traits. This is less intense outside of the fleet and civilian-side, there’s a fair amount of scientific study and rigor fighting against this perception.
The funny part of this headcanon is that galra find baby strollers a really weird concept since overwhelmingly galra carry babies with slings or backpacks so that being close to the parent/caretaker’s body helps trip that soothing reflex of “all is well, friends are here”
Like… there’s just a lot of culture shock of “humanity… what are you doing. babies don’t belong in little carts, humanity, you’re gonna make them cry.”
^Read this. Then look at this baby crying, all alone:
And tell me that doesn’t explain a lot about Lotor.
this is the best thing ive drawn tbh
So ever since season 5 came out I wanted to draw something Lotura and then… It turned into (most of) my VLD ships (+ Pidge) hanging out… Oops?
(Took me over three fucking weeks to finish this)
Thanks, @linnehs, for creating their gorgeous outfits for me <3
can we start a lotor support club? i get a "starved for affection" vibe from him.
I wholeheartedly support that idea.
And I’m personally hoping during season 6 that there’ll be a moment when Allura or someone touches Lotor and it ends up being this meme. Though it probably won’t happen just cuz of them already holding hands once or twice in season 5, but I can dream.
Why Keith was so keen on capturing and pursuing Lotor? Almost obsessed? Has it been said in canon yet?
Hi there! Thank you for the ask!
It’s a good question, and “obsessed” is definitely a word that comes to mind when thinking of how focused he was on Lotor from S3-S4. I’ve not seen anything explicitly said or referenced in the show yet regarding why Keith was so focused on Lotor.
From what we’ve seen in the show so far, Keith’s focus on Lotor, is a reflection of his Galra side (that we can reasonably infer without it being explicitly stated).
It’s a kind of directness, to-the-point-ness, refusing-to-yield-ness that drives a “let’s get this done/over with” behavior that we’ve seen of Keith multiple times throughout the show in different contexts:
Voltron cheer, where Keith is to-the-point in a way that’s charming
Confronting Pidge about not leaving the team in S1 in a way that’s rude but also to-the-point. He’s not fucking around.
Trials of Marmora, refusing to yield in a way that is relentless.
His attitude concerning the “Voltron Show” as a waste of time.
It’s almost as if Keith took Shiro’s advice: “Patience yields focus.” to heart, but in the wrong way. His Galra heritage gives him a kind of aggressive impatience that leads him to throw caution to the winds in hyper-focused-pursuit of a target.
We’ve seen the Galra aggression-and-relentless pursuit/fighting from Zarkon (while relentlessly pursuing the team in S2 for the Black Lion), from Throk when fighting Lotor (who taunts Throk about that aggression), from Lotor (when the White Lion triggers it), and from other Galra and Galra-hybrids when they fight in battle. There is an element of goal-setting here, the higher the goal or payoff, the more obsessive focus and relentless pursuit behavior is displayed.
If Keith and Voltron want to defeat the Empire, then Lotor was the highest value target (if one couldn’t see the bigger picture, or knew that Zarkon still lived but was incapped). Taking out Lotor—in Keith’s mind—takes down the Empire.
No emperor, no empire right?
We first saw Keith’s obsessive-focus triggered during his battle with Zarkon (s1e11: The Black Paladin). As with Lotor, it was like someone pushed the kill button.
Coran tries multiple times to warn Keith away but he remains focused and relentless. Keith will not yield.
And Zarkon calls it like he sees it.
Kuron is actually Zarkon.
I’m going to disclaim this with - I’m not sure how much I actually believe this is happening, but I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t do a theory post on it. Essentially, there is a possibility that the “soul”/quintessence inside Kuron - or a brainwashed Shiro - could actually be Zarkon.
Exhibit A: The Rift Entities
From Season ¾, we can assume two things - one, that Honevra and Haggar are two separate people, whereas Haggar/the rift entities are possessing Honevra’s body.
Or two - Haggar and Honevra are the same person, with the same feelings, and thus - Honevra just…forgot who she was for 10,000 years.
Though I’m not a fan of the latter idea, it makes more sense, now that Haggar is all about protecting her son in Season 5.
Let’s go for the former idea for the moment - that Haggar/rift entities are separate from Honerva. Then there is a good chance we have two separate Zarkons - the pre-rift Zarkon (Black Paladin) and post rift-Zarkon (with rift entity included). If that’s the case, who did Honerva get here?
Post-rift Zarkon. And pre-rift Zarkon might have been placed into Kuron’s body.
(I know I’m asking you to take a lot for granted, but hold on. I promise. Some pay-off is coming.)
Exhibit B: You Trusted Me Once.
This scene has bothered me for a while because a) if Shiro believed Black teleported into the hands of the Galra, why would he trust Black again? and b) if the Shiro in the screenshot above is a clone, then Black never trusted him to begin with. But if pre-rift Zarkon’s spirit is in Black, then Black has certainly trusted Zarkon before.
(Disregard this part if you believe in the brainwashed!Shiro theory. Black is hesitant because Shiro is compromised or because he lacks the necessary quintessence to jumpstart Black.)
Exhibit C: Paladins vs. Team
In S1 and S2, Shiro exclusively referred to the Paladins of Voltron as “team,” “everyone,” and “guys.”
Yet, when he returns after being held captive a second time by the Galra:
You know who else addressed the team as “paladins?”
Exhibit D: The Time is Right
All right. When is the time right, Shiro?
Wait. Hold on a tick. Shiro was waiting for Zarkon’s cue?
Sure - the cue could be Lotor’s attack on Axca, but those two lines fit very well together in the sense of one person manipulating the whole fight.
Which - y’know, someone is.
After all, what’s the whole purpose of Haggar rushing to start Operation Kuron Stage 4? If it’s just to allow her to see through Shiro, then she got a front row seat to Sam Holt’s rescue, which didn’t help her with Lotor in any way. So Stage 4, IMHO, needs to be something else.
Plus - the team didn’t attack while Axca was down and Lotor led Zarkon away. They waited for Zarkon to speak.
Exhibit E: Motivation
Here’s the kicker, IMHO. Throughout S1 and S2, Zarkon had one goal. It wasn’t to get Voltron, actually. According to Season 1, Voltron had the key to unimaginable power.
We know this “key” to be the Black Lion, to the point where Zarkon was obsessed with getting the Black Lion back.
(Speculation - while Voltron can pass through into other realities, Black can reopen the rift and get Zarkon the purest quintessence.)
So here’s the issue - after Haggar brings back Voltron, Zarkon just…stops caring about Black? Sure, in “Blood Duel,” he demands the lions in exchange for Sam, but prior to that, he was all up in Lotor’s grill. Why wouldn’t he be trying to get Black again from the get-go? So what if Lotor had/has another comet - if Zarkon was able to get Voltron, he could still get into the rift. And even if Lotor could, too, Voltron/Zarkon could stop him. Unless…
Lotor didn’t return the Black Lion to the Galra. Haggar and Zarkon did by putting pre-rift Zarkon into Kuron’s body.
Again, there are a lot of conflicting factors in this -
Why wouldn’t Kuron have Zarkon’s memories then?
Why does Haggar just watch the team? Why doesn’t she have Kuron take out the team or at least take Black to the rift?
Why search for Oriande your entire life, Haggar, if you want the purest quintessence from the rift? And you have the power to get it? (And unless you have someone chosen - you can’t get into Oriande anyway.)
Why do you need any of that - if you already have supercharged quintessence? There’s still that supply line that hasn’t been stopped.
And then this -
Who is Kuron talking to here? It can’t be Lotor. (He’s not talking - we can see him just beyond Kuron above.) Haggar? Could be, but we haven’t seen her talking to Kuron yet. Could Shiro/Kuron and Zarkon be talking?
Who knows, really? I guess we’ll find out eventually.
Exhibit F: “A Bit Too Late”
Jeremy: Obviously that’s spoiler territory. But it’s interesting that he kind of gives that warning to Lance and that obviously at the time we don’t really know what that’s about. But that will definitely come up in the next season, I think. Either the next season or the one after that, but that… will come back fairly soon, and there’s some pretty big ramifications there. People can probably theorize on what that actually means, but I guess I can’t really state what that is, but it will be something that sits with Lance for a while and then he might realize what it actually means a little bit too late. So we’ll see.
Exhibit G: Zarkon yells at Alfor; Shiro yells at Lance.
TL;DR:
Death by stick? I think not.
Great post! Love it. I’ve been thinking that Shiro/Kuron could be Zarkon’s next body but never thought it all way the through. This is nicely done.
it’s time.

Voltron Paladins
Maybe this should have a quote or somesuch on it to balance it out compositionally. Pretty obvious I’m used to making comics when I keep subconsciously leaving room for speech bubbles in all my art.
On the other hand, I like the negative space. Feels symbolic of the loneliness Lotor’s undoubtedly had in his life before connecting with Allura.
Reblog to bow to your emperor.
VLD Lotor deserves casual Earth clothes that appropriately acknowledge his snackability while leaving his aesthetic intact, so here’s my take.
Still trying to figure out “my style,” but I’m actually really proud of this. If it’s well received, I might even animate it a tad for further practice!
When Keith finds out Lance does in fact remember the bonding moment

I’m late to the party, am I?
