no, I’m sorry. “The unhygenic thing” is not opt-out for the kind of women I want more of. Fictional girls almost never get to be gross! When I said grungy, I meant grungy. She’s in yesterday’s makeup (if she wears any) and yesterday’s outfit. She smells like stale cigarette smoke. She smells like weed. She smells like gasoline and workshop grease. She smells like she’s found a nice dead thing to roll in. She lives in a one-room apartment surrounded by computer equipment and empty styrofoam takeout containers. She lives deep in a swamp in a cabin full of centipedes and spiders. She lives in a cave. She lives on a pirate ship. She chews off her nail polish, she goes dumpster-diving, she eats dry instant ramen crushed up in the bag like it’s chips, she eats bugs off the ground, she eats raw meat. Saw this on Pinterest but wanted to share bc actually I have had a physio recommend this to me and it’s been amazing!

Walking backwards strengths the muscles around your knee (esp the quadriceps, which you will definitely feel if you do this) but doesn’t put the same strain on the joint as forward walking or running. It’s very good for your balance, coordination and patellar tracking, all important to reduce knee pain, support your knees and can help rehab knee injuries.

I do it on a gym treadmill, usually at 1.2 km/h (but I’ve seen anywhere from 0.8-1.6 km/h recommended, which is like 0.5-1.0 mph for the Americans). You can start with a very slight incline and then slowly increase it 5% as you get more comfortable, and to help engage the muscles. I usually do this for 5 to 10 minutes, 3-4 times a week. My understanding is that you can also do it outside, either on flat or sloped ground, because just walking backwards itself is useful as hell (the incline is just useful to engage muscles more as you get more used to it)

If you have even a spare 20 minutes a week, this is seriously useful to support your knees, because there is nothing worse than injuring one

Not so fun thing that happened at work:

We were doing one of those team-building logic problem things that was about being stranded with inadequate supplies in adverse conditions and how to best use what we had. There was the argument of "do we try to get to somewhere safer or do we stay put and signal for help?" (The particular adverse condition was extremely hot desert if I remember right.)

I was the only woman in my group. I was also the only person saying WE SHOULD BE STAYING PUT.

Spoiler alert: I WAS CORRECT. Trying to move in those conditions would make the issue of "really not enough drinkable water" worse. Especially moving while carrying supplies including what was left of the water! The right thing to do was to use what we had to make what shade we could and what signal devices we could, and then conserve as much energy as possible while waiting for help.
