stuff where roxy and dirk’s relationship is portrayed as this super positive and healthy thing annoys me so much. i really dislike that picture with dave saying he’s disappointed in rose for drinking and dirk saying he’s proud of roxy and they’re all smiles because overall dave and rose are way better to each other (i mean it’s nice art and all i just get annoyed about roxy and dirk being portrayed as super ideal and functional)
roxy didn’t respect dirk’s feelings and hit on him despite his stated discomfort and he felt guilty about being unable to return her feelings
earlier on it seemed like dirk was really wary of roxy’s ability to do… much of anything? he obviously considered her important to him, but he didn’t trust her the way he trusted jane
(the second screenshot to me just sounds like dirk expected roxy to mess something up. he doesn’t sound surprised that roxy caused problems, or consider that it may not be the result of something she actively did - instead it sounds more like “what did she do this time?” he acts like she’s a liability, and admittedly she was an alcoholic but i dunno. i just feel uncomfortable with how dirk talked about roxy pre-A6A5, he comes across more like he considers himself her stern father figure whose patience is always being tested, rather than her equal)
and then i don’t think it gets better later? i’ve written about this, he just idealizes her and doesn’t seem to actually get her. roxy can be selfish and manipulative and she is a basically good person with mostly good intentions who cares about her friends but dirk talks about her as this perfect selfless paragon, holding her up to this standard the same way he did with jake. and the way he talks about how guilty he feels for being unable to love her the way she wants him to, and how all this comes together when he’s feeling at his lowest and most useless and is sort of projecting onto roxy his idea of all the good things that he can never be, just the whole thing seems SUPER UNHEALTHY all around.
like sure they love each other deeply but so do all these damn kids that doesn’t make their relationship less messed up
they’re very important to each other but if i had to think of their healthiest friendship i would pick jane for dirk and calliope for roxy. roxy and dirk’s relationship is significant and interesting and filled with a lot of deeply sincere emotion but it’s also a big hot mess
okay I impulsively changed my blog url it's now "raginrayguns.tumblr.com" we'll see how I like it and if it sticks
