i'm reading far too much into jaehaerys and saera. i don't think grrm intended an incestuous reading of Jaehaerys w/ any of his daughters. their relationships are written as a critique of Targaryen patriarchy. how house targ treats its women as breeding vessels for intermarriage as a means for dragons to not pass into rival houses through targaryen women and its hobbling of their daughter/sisters.
i just like awful ships. i ship damphair/euron too. it's emotionally entangled and that's what makes saehaerys appealing as well.
unlike damphair and euron, though, I don't think the text intentionally supports jaehaerys was sexually abusive of his daughters. there are metas arguing that, but I think it's entirely headcanon. grrm has never been shy about writing or hinting csa, so I don't see why he'd suddenly become coy about it.

my own headcanon is that his relationship with saera is emotionally incestuous rather than physically incestuous.
jaehaerys' possessiveness of saera is the main anchor of the ship for me.
she's his daughter, so she's already "his" in the feudal sense.
but compared to daella, who jaehaerys rushes to marry off at fifteen/sixteen, saera is nearly eighteen and instead of arranging a marriage, he confines her to a motherhouse for years despite her openly expecting marriage.
all three of saera's lovers are punished, but braxton, her favorite which she says as much in front of jaehaerys, is singled out for torture. jaehaerys personally fights and mutilates him in their trial by combat.
during saera's confession, jaehaerys seems more angered that she'd deceived him.
what permanently destroys any possibility of reconciliation isn't only her maegor comparison, barth thought even that wasn't beyond jaehaerys' forgiveness, it was her escape. she chose to remove herself from his control. saera exercised sexual agency over her body that belongs to him, escaped twice. i also like to think her taunt about "boys are such silly fools", stung jaehaerys.
okay, now his relationship w/ alicent.
saera isn't his first daughter. she isn't his last surviving child. vaegon is still alive. yet it's saera he mistakes alicent for and calls out to in his dying days. there's also the rumor alicent was his lover, which is definitely not true but worth tossing in.
note the possessive language used by him.

daella physically resembles alysanne, is deeply attached to jaehaerys, and ultimately chooses an older husband bc he reminds her of her father. i headcanon that jaehaerys didn't really pay much attention to his daughters, until daella's forced him to. unlike alyssa or maegelle, daella is dependent and constantly seeking comfort.
my completely unsupported headcanon is that whatever feelings daella stirred disturbed him, contributing to why he becomes so determined to marry her off. only for him to later settle on saera.
there's no textual evidence for this. it's purely something i'm reading far too into but i think it lines up w/ certainevents in the timeline.
in 78 alysanne tells jaehaerys she no longer wants to risk pregnancy. their last child is conceived in 79. daella dies in childbirth in 82. saera's 10-12 around these events, which is the age range when she begandrinking.
saera seeks affection from her mother but unable to obtain this from alysanne, she finds that the parent easiest to charm is jaehaerys.
septon barth's sympathetic view of saera describes her as an attention-starved child.
and i think it's interesting that the line could work for jaehaerys, following the timeline.

Hi guys! As I mentioned in my last yap post, I've been reading The Silmarillion. It's funny bc I'm a lifelong (when I say lifelong, I mean lifelong, as in my dad introduced me as a kid and I've loved it ever since) Lord of the Rings/Tolkien's Legendarium fan, but I never seem to talk about that, so I'm going to make an effort to post more content since I think more people deserve to be exposed to Tolkien's work! Anyways, big thanks to @sulsulzukohere for giving me the kick in the ass to start reading The Simarillion and being my yap buddy for all things LOTR ⸜(｡˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡.
